Marlins add amateur nudist Redmond to manager merry-go-round; plus Heat confidence poll, my Halloween video, Tannehill, SOPY rank & more

1aa1fact[1) It is THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1. Did you have a happy Halloween? We're a mid-traffic neighborhood. Probably candied about 30 kids. 2) Enough with the Dwayne Bowe-to-Dolphins speculation and rumors! (Please?) 3) Visit our video channel atYouTube/TheGregCote (on hiatus; new vids coming soon) and join us on Twitter @gregcote]

Halloween video from me to you: Click HERE to watch. It stars me, new Heater Ray Allen, defrocked Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, and the sublime Lauren Tannehill. Enjoy!

MARLINS HIRE MIKE REDMOND AS MANAGER: Marlins interviewed three others including the ghost of Larry Bowa, who last managed in 2004 and turns 67 in December, but the clear frontrunner all along was Redmond, the former Marlins catcher. He has only Single-A experience as a manager but is praised as ready by those who know him. I like the hire. Redmond is perhaps best remembered during his Marlins years for once entering the batting cage nude -- wearing only spikes and batting gloves -- to help break a losing streak. That isn't legend; he admits it. And it worked. The season was 2003. The Marlins won the World Series.

OPENING NIGHT: RINGS ON, BANNER UP, HEAT BEATS CELTICS: [Update: Heat beat Celtics, 120-107, behind 29 from D-Wade, 26 from LeBron and 19 apiece from Ray Allen and Chris Bosh. Click on The Routine Of Excellence for my column from the game]. And the curtain lifts on Year 3 of the Big 3. The Heat NBA championship that was won in June and celebrated with a parade is celebrated anew 1aa1kglebonight as the 2012-13 season commences. A ring ceremony and 1aa1champslifting of the championship banner will precede a game against the Boston Celtics, who most experts expect will meet Miami in the Eastern Conference finals. Ray Allen switching sides only enlivens an already heated rivalry. Boston is counting on Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett (pictured with LeBron) to once again play younger than they are. The Celtics lead the Heat's East roadblock alsong with Indiana and perhaps Chicago. Waiting in the NBA Finals, should Miami returns, figures to be the fortified L.A. Lakers, Oklahoma City again, or perhaps San Antonio. I know Heat fans are confident; the question is how confident? Vote now.

Poll result: Sorry LeBron, but it's still D-Wade: We asked in a recent blog poll who your favorite Heat player is, and Dwyane Wade had 60.1 percent to LeBron James' 34.2. The other 5.7% chose "someone else."

NFL PIX 'N FANTASY: OK on one, not so much on the other... NFL predix: Had a decent Week 8 on my Friday pix page, going 10-4 overall and 7-6-1 vs. the betting line. Nailed two outright upsets with Falcs over Eagles and Raiders over Chiefs, but, oh, missing that Miami game hurt. What was I thinking! Greg's Lobos: My fantasy team sucks, or I do running it. Fell to 2-6 with a 124-87 loss. Had nobody over 17 points. Not giving up on a playoff spot but the 'Bos need to pick it up. Let's go!

TANNEHILL INJURY ONLY A BRUISE: MRI results on Ryan Tannehill's injured left leg showed no structural damage to the knee or quad, only a deep bruise. His status for Sunday's game at Indianapolis is a legitimate questionable. "What he can or can't do Wednesdday and Thursday will deteremine his availability," a club spokesman told us. Meanwhile Matt Moore's status rises as one of NFL's better backup QBs.

McKinnie and strip clubs: Hey here's an only-in-Miami story for you. Bryant McKinnie is being sued in Miami-Dade Circuit Court by the father of rap star Trick Daddy. The allegation: That McKinnie, Ravens offensive tackle and former Miami Hurricane, ran up $375,000 in bills at South Florida strip clubs -- money borrowed from the dad of Daddy. McKinnie told the Baltimore Sun the suit us "bogus."

Marlins 40-1 odds for next World Series: Bovada has new odds out already for 2013 World Series and leaders are Tigers 6-1, Yankees 7-1 and Giants 10-1. Miami is a respectable 40-1 but unfortunately that's fourth in the NL East after the 12-1 Nationals and 14-1 Braves and Phillies.

1aa1pabloPANDA TIME! FITNESS IS OVERRATED: Moms, give your child that extra Twinkie. Dads, let that gym membership lapse. Kids, fat is the new thin! The Giants' Pablo "Panda" Sandoval is the World Series MVP -- the man sitting atop all of baseball -- following his team's sweep of the Tigers. Sandoval in the postseason led the Giants in home runs, RBIs and carbs. Here he is. Mr. America!

SOPY RANKINGS (WEEK 9): ALPHABET SOUP: E.J. LEADS B.J.: This college football season marks the blog debut of our weekly State Offensive Player of the Year (SOPY) rankings, which I like to call the "Sunshine State Heisman." Our chart encompasses the most productive seasons of any quarterback, running back or receiver from the state's seven FBS teams: Miami, Florida and FSU, FIU and FAU, and South Florida and UCF. (Note: Rankings consider only passing, rushing and receiving, not returns). Our formula awards one point per offensive yard gained running or receiving and a half-point per yard passing, plus six bonus points for touchdowns thrown or scored. Because our rankings are cumulative, players on a bye week take a temporary hit that evens out over course of season. After Week 9 it's Florida State's E.J. Manuel leading for a third straight week, but narrowly over South Florida counterpart B.J. Daniels. The SOPY Top 10 entering Week 10:

Rank (LW)     Player, Team-pos.     SOPY Pts. Week=Year

1 (1)     E.J. Manuel, FSU-qb     157 = 1,483.5

2 (3)     B.J. Daniels, South Florida-qb     231.5 = 1,457

3 (2)     Stephen Morris, Miami-qb     BYE = 1,241

4 (4)     Jake Medlock, FIU-qb     110.5 = 1,112

5 (6)     Blake Bortles, UCF-qb     173.5 = 1,099.5

6 (5)     Chris Thompson, FSU-rb     DNP = 965

7 (7)     Jeff Driskel, Florida-qb     88.5 = 946

8 (8)     Graham Wilbert, FAU-qb     165.5 = 941

9 (9)     Mike Gillislee, Florida-rb     117 = 834

10 (--)     Latavius Murray, UCF-rb     218 = 700

Bubble: Duke Johnson, Miami-rb, 692.

State of the State rankings: 1. Florida (7-1); 2. FSU (8-1); 3. UCF (6-2); 4. Miami (4-4); 5. South Florida (2-6); 6. FAU (2-6); 7. FIU (1-8).

Click back. It say here we'll be updating/adding to this latest blgopost...

Some great weekday doings a' goin' on - Heat tonight and Va Tech for a shot at the ACC championship game Thursday!

Don't sleep on the Knicks, I think they'll wind up being a tougher out in the east than the Pacers or Celtics. Bulls all depend on Rose.

Get your rings tonight and then get waxed looking forward to it Boston ain't going away Heat fans.

Vegas disagrees with you Kazaam they have LA Lakers, Heat, OKC, SA, Boston as top five favorites to win the NBA title.

Tell Vegas that the Lakers, OKC, and SA aren't in the east.

Do the math they think it will be Miami vs. Boston in the East too as does just about anyone who pays attention to NBA basketball.

Kazaam just curious have you changed your mind about the Dolphins being a "garbage organization"?

They are easily the surprise team in the NFL this season and should be favored in their next 4 games.

Peter King has called them the most underrated team in the league.

I assume you will dodge this question and if you do you are a mouse not a man cowboy up.

Kazaam,

it is amazing that the canes can still get into the ACC title game, as UNC is ineligible and besides va tech, only duke (!!!) would have a shot. they'll take a spanking in the title game, but getting there and into a level two or three bowl game with such an inept squad should hearten those who haven't jumped ship.

Trade deadline was moved to Thursday, Seahawks are interested in Bowe.

Shadow - if they get to six wins they'll probably decline the bowl game. I think they'd have a shot at beating FSU, which would be tremendous for their NCAA penalty consideration because they'd be turning down the BCS game played in their home stadium. Doesn't do any good though to wait until you lose the title game and then tell the NCAA you're declining the Famous Idaho Potato bowl.

Gotta beat Va Tech first, Hokies are a good team and very well coached, Miami has had a long time to prepare so it should be a great game!

Big Baby - of course, everything I've said about the Dolphins is true. Their owner is a clown who just wants to pal around with celebrities but he is willing to spend and he doesn't want to make any football decisions. Their GM is a Parcells clone with an outdated philosophy but could be irrelevant if he lucked into a quarterback. Their coach has never designed or called an offense in his life and is 100% not the 'quarterback guru' everyone was saying he is but he's organized and competent and could be fine with good coordinators if they lucked into a quarterback.

Above all else, I've said the only thing that matters for the Dolphins and the only thing that can save them is finding a quarterback.

Still think David Garrard is winning comeback player of the year? Still think they should have wasted the entire 2012 season on him like they wanted to?

Owner should not be making any football decisions his GM should be.

Watching Green Bay this year you don't think that they miss Joe Philbin?

It's obvious they do a little.

Miami has a long way to go on offense but this defense has not been constructed by a garbage organization that much is clear best 3rd down defense in the NFL right now without their starting CB for most of the year.

They would have been fine with Garrard this year maybe better record.

When they make the playoffs this year you can eat crow your crticisms of this team are truly misplaced right now.

My criticisms have been of the franchise, not the team. I said before the season they could make the playoffs and maybe win a game if they wasted the year on Garrard. I also made a prediction of N/A before the season as to wins and losses, because nothing matters this year but Tannehill's development and seeing what we have with him.

The 2011 draft was proof that Ireland doesn't respect the quarterback position and was forced to take Tannehill in 2012. He thought Chad Henne was good enough with four years of NFL tape on him.

They wanted to waste the entire season with David Garrard until his kids mercifully ended his career playing Marco Polo.

This franchise has Mr. Magooed it's way into rolling the dice with the only position that can fix the franchise. Early returns look good.

I'm not getting too high on this Dolphins team as they beat bad teams with their schedule or make a wildcard and I'm not getting down on them when they lose to teams they shouldn't or miss the playoffs. Nothing matters this year but Tannehill's development.

And my one criticism of this team - that the cupboards are bare for Tannehill, he has no one to throw to, and they don't have the talent on offense to be contenders - that's true too.

If Seahawks get Bowe, they will overpay dearly with future draft picks.

Will Miami trade anyone or for anyone before the NFL trade deadline??

IMO--no

Kazaam is a joke. As long as he continues to support that bitch Shalala he will have zero credibility. How 'bout them Giants!

Jimbo I think they are in on the Bowe talks depends on what they are asking but I say do it our offense needs a boost.

Jimbo - not sure about that, there is some precedent for impending free agents with no chance of resigning being had for a song. The bigger issue with Bowe is that #1 Miami can't talk to him as long as he's a Chief and #2 they can't renegotiate his deal until after the season anyway because he was tagged.

Limpdick - stop crying because the team you only like because they used to win championships isn't winning championships anymore. Go follow whatever school you went to.

Kazaam agree they held onto Henne too long but I think it was 2 years of game film not 4 his third year would have been the 2011 season.

Depite what you think this "franchise" is moving in the right direction.

You must have googled Mr. Magoo you weren't even born when they were showing reruns of that show on tv.

Baby,

Kaz was too busy Brown-nosing Frodo's wife & making "more money than Obama".....

Good afternoon muchachos..

Baby, Kazaam will always be "negativo" he can't help it, its in his genes, he is too blind to see this organization in a positive way, he won't concede the team has made very good moves the last two years (since Ireland took over) from new players through the draft or free agents or the hiring of a very good coach ...Kaz, why don't you just become a Raven's fan full time, we don't need you.

I don't think the Dolphins are in play for Bowe, if we make the trade for him he will only be available for the last ten games of the year and there is no guarantee he will resign with us so giving up a high draft pick for him is not wise.

Woodcock,

congrats to the SF Giants, pitching and defense will always win out over offense, good job by them.

That's what I told Big Baby. I remember those early 60's Dodgers teams and that's exactly how they used to get it done.

I guess I must say Congratulations also Woodcock my prediction was way off the Tigers blew it but your team is pretty good.

FZB we could get Bowe and franchise him for next season but at a 20 percent increase meaning 11.5 million due to him next year.

He would also be due the remaining 5 million of his contract this season a high price indeed if you throw in draft picks.

Kaz,

Yes this team is not elite but that's not the point, they have been beating bad teams so far and that is also true but they are showing great character, resiliency and have exceeded all expectations so far in the early going.

they have a young QB that looks like the real deal and a coach that is still feeling his way around but that the players respect and are playing hard for, we also have a bunch of young players that are developing quite nicely plus the defense and special teams are among the tops in the NFL..

yup, we are ahead of schedule..we'll be alright in a couple of more years..

Miami has allowed 126 points this season, fewest in the AFC.

That's a good stat, I didn't know that.

I think the Heat will take care of the "Geriatric's" tonight, sorry Baby.

You might want to add that only Chicago and SF have allowed less in all NFL.

ESPN's tuesday ranking now have the Dolphins at #12. If they are able to beat the Horseshoes -- look out!

Yes OC and I think that we can beat SF with that dink and dunk QB they have also.

Jim Harbaugh seems like a real jerk it would be sweet to see him steaming after that one.

FZB Celtics are one year older but also one year better their roster is improved (granted Heat's might be also) we shall see.

Oye OC,

the Lakers have a clear advantage in the west now with OKC making their bone-head move to trade Harden, you guys have no excuses now.

we'll be waiting..Heat and Lakers in the finals.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch FZB gotta play 82 first.

Celtics won't be there to see the ring ceremony either they will be in the locker room kicking sh*t up and getting ready to ball it up.

FZB, yes, OKC moved Harden, but they actually got better with the addition of Kevin Martin. As much a Laker fan as I am, I have to concede that the Thunder will be there fighting for the Western Conference along with the Lakers, the Spurs, and the Clippers. Yes, you heard it correctly. The Clippers.

Also, I'm not at all convinced that Mike Brown can actually coach himself out of a paper bag.

Good luck to you and other Heat fans on the blog, and to BB and his Celtics.

Thanks OC luck to you and all of those celebrity suck ups too (Jack not included).

Hear, hear, FZB your comment at 2:14 PM is dead on dude. You and Dave in LA were the only ones on this blog that were confident about this season and you guys deserve credit. In my wildest dreams I never thought that this guy Philbin would work out and by any measurement the guy has done a great job this year.

OC, who is Kevin Martin?

OC,

You think this Kevin Martin dude is better than the best 6th man in the NBA????

Woodcock, thanks for your comment, may I add senor Baby to the list?..He was also on the Dolphins bandwagon early on.

FZ, I'm saying that the Thunder didn't suffer greatly by Harden's loss. Kevin Martin is a consistent 17 point guy and will most likely be the starting shooting guard ahead of Sefolosha. They will be even faster as a team.

Woodcock,

I know the team just looked horrible in the exibition games but I knew the team had a solid defense and special teams plus I knew they would be in much better shape this year than last year since there was no lock out.

my main concern was the QB situation which is why I was high on Garrard playing this year and letting Tannehill sit for a while (like most experts had said) but Tannehill fooled everyone and beat the two vets.

looking back starting Tannehill was the right decision for the now and the future, the guy came in already knowing the offense (BIG PLUS) and took over, Philbin has been a pleasant surprise, the guy looks like a janitor but he is becoming a great coach, that's right I said it..He is the best we had around here since the great one himself (Shula)..

OC - come on, you know players put up big scoring numbers on bad teams, Martin isn't a 17 point guy on a team with Durant and Harden.

The biggest blow isn't with matchups or Xs and Os, it's a huge downgrade in chemistry, not only what Harden brings but with what Martin takes away, he's a selfish player who teammates hate. He's a 10 year vet who's been hit with the 'locker room cancer' label at one point or another every season.

OKC could have made another run and still gotten picks in a sign and trade, since Hardens demanding a max contract. You can't write them off but they must be behind LA and SA now in the west.

I for one am pretty damn happy with the way Philbin has come in and taken charge, he is a quiet professional. No Rex Ryan bluster, just kick their ass in their own back yard and don't gloat after. Someone said earlier, class... the players are buying in. The Phins haven't been able to bring in a free agent that wasn't a felon in years, I see that changing. We have a coach.

Tannehill was drafted before his projected worth by all accounts. This kid has had his rookie hiccups, but has grown every week! Repeat, every week! He has taken some big pops from veteran defensive bad asses and gotten up. His situational awareness kept him from being killed by Pace on Sunday. With that, I know Philbin will assess the Sunday opponent, and make a wise choice on who starts at QB vice the sexy decision of matching up rookie first rounders for bragging rights. Moore proved Sunday he is not only serviceable, but a solid NFL QB, so an ass kicking is inevitable. I just want to see this D make Luck crap his pants.

This team is the most rapidly improving team in the NFL. I haven't been able to say thet since... '73. and I was only eight. If we as fans don't expect perfection on every play we can't help but be elated.

it is nitpicking to be critical of this dolphins team right now, as they improve every week. i am excited too, and haven't been in a long time.
as for coulter, media matters documents many lies told by coulter. !.) FOX news has never been busted promoting a hoax, 2.) falsely claiming obama's lipstick on a pig comment was about palin, when in fact it was inresponse to a speech mccain made, 3.) numerous misquotes of NYtimes colunist frank rich, among others..

http://mediamatters.org/research/2009/01/04/guilty-coulters-latest-book-filled-with-falseho/146663

in addition to lies about john kerry's war record..

And by the way, some (maybe most) of you not only give Ireland no credit, you demonize him. Realize who he worked for when he came here and imagine how much juice he likely actually had. Look at the lineup now, He had a lot to do with putting this crew together. Not saying he hasn't missed, but I don't recall any competition from other GMs when he was raping the CFL of Cameron Wake.

Salary cap. That's where I think expertise is needed.

Dave in Va,

good to have you back, excellent post, I agree with everything you said, be carefull on giving Ireland too much credit, Kazaam is going to get upset with you,lol

David, Obama has mislead the American public on the murder of those 4 americans, that's a fact jack..

HAHAHAHA !!!!

the Dolphins just cut Anthony Armnstrong, we are now one WR short, can you say D Bowe to the Dolphins?

my toes are tingling...

Bro, I sure hope you're right but he has done a great job so far and the players that the GM has brought in have done the job so all around you have to give props to the whole team.

Big Baby if you were on the Dolphins early props to you too.

Not TOO much credit to Ireland FZB. Just saying he has in my opinion batted better than .500 when he was actually swinging the bat by himself. And I love that he had the balls to call a fan/critic an asshole. The same fan who is likely warming up to him now. If we can pull a deal for Bowe, who made it clear he wants to play in Miami... well, there's not a whole lot of holes to be plugged the way these guys appear to be being coached up.

Kazzam, not my words, but someone whose opinion I respect: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8563966

Damn, Shaquille can't spell worth a lick.

A contrasting opinion.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8573213/the-harden-disaster

And in the words of someone whose opinion I respect:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2oZWpqtNi4

I'm off to bayside, should be interesting to see how Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis are used tonight, I'd expect to see a lot of Allen and Miller early in the season until Wade is healthy from his knee surgery.

Ok have fun tell that crybaby Ray Ray I said he is now public enemy # 1.

OC,

Bruce Bowen knows a lot more than me about basketball but Harden is a very good player while martin is a good player, maybe they'll hit on one of those one's they got in return but I think they handed the west to the Laker's..

If the Dolphins deal for Bowe its probably with the condition that they agree in principle on a long term deal if not I would not give up more than a fourth rounder...I mean you can him for free in feb 2013.

Interesting POV (concerning Dwayne Bowe) from the Sun Sentinel. Particularly interesting for all who favorably view the work being done by Ireland and Philbin.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/sfl-hyde5-pros-and-cons-of-trading-for-dwayne-bowe-20121030,0,4171435.story

Baby,

Don't be a hater, Ray Allen knows the Heat are the better team, that's why he picked them, he knows the deal.

Good competitive game mostly these two teams are pretty good.

C's have mad weapons on the bench it has to rank up there as one of the best in the league.

Now go get D. Bowe so we can make our move to win the division this year the draft is uncertain go for the sure thing our defense is loaded our offense looks subpar he's still only 28.

I would give up what we got in the Marshall trade two 3's and call it a day.

Not sure I would call it a statement game like was written in the Herald but solid win by the Heat.

Please Jeff go get Bowe this team has had a crappy offense for 15 years I am tired of waiting Git R Done.

Big Baby,

"crappy offense for 15 years"- courtesy jimmy johnson and the incredible reluctance to parts with #13, just as mike 1 would tell you. jay fiedler was totally misused- a tremendous athlete who should have been throwing on the run more and who got stuck in the twilight zone of johnson/wannstedt/kippy brown dull offensive minds. fiedler has the best winning %age of any dolphin QB, i believe, with the exception of griese, and maybe the best of all of them. just to show you how dumb these guys were, they had the most feared runner in the NFL in ricky williams, yet i don't believe in all those seasons they onceran a play where #34 took the ball into the line and stopped and pitched back to fiedler for a pass; this may be considered a gimmick play by many, but when you have the ricky williams of his golden years here this is a play that should have been run 2-4 times per game as a staple of the offense!! when ricky williams got the ball, every body on defense had to get in his direction as it took half a team to bring him down. watching the 98-00 dolphins was painful, as mike1 will attest. however, the bright side is that this could be a season like 2008- the dolphins are alive for a spot in the playoffs and very few of us thought so.

ALEX SMITH!!!

the guy had passer ratings of 5, 12 , ... and jim harbaugh has made him a very good and consistent player. run and run defense- giants and 49ers; at this point the dolphins certainly have the run defense part of the still winning formula, but they can't run the ball with all those shlubs who can't block. they have two efficient QBs, and a solid front seven on defense. running and pass defense are in need of improvement- seasn smith may be the best CB they have, but he gives uo too many completions and gets lucky a lot when his man drops he ball.

geez, #15 for miami got screwed twice by the refs. my favorite guy is having another nice season and earning every penny he's getting. the dolphins can't complain about what he gave them when he was "minimum wage".

Good win for the Heatles yesterday, the Celtics are much improved, I don't see any other team or teams challenging these two in the east, maybe Indiana?

Rondo and Garnett are punks.

Eddy Curry started for the Mav's yesterday and they beat the Laker's?..How did that happened?

Baby, I agree we should go after Bowe but not for TWO third rounders, that's too much to give up, a fourth or maybe a third.

Hey Kaz and others that where bashing Ireland for trading Vontae Davis need to read this.

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/2012/10/mixed-news-on-vontae-trade-stephen-morris-troubles-fins-heat-canes-notes.html

Chalmers to my surprise had a very good game yesterday.

very pleased with our new bench (Allen,Lewis,Cole,Miller and Haslem)..very solid.

because the lakers are done, their stars are old, their center can't hit free throws, they have no cohesion, and their back up point guard had more assists than nash, and nash played more minutes.
you guys should hear the idiots on sports radio here in los angeles; not only do they say the lakers are going to beat miami in the finals, but they're saying they could break the bulls season victory total!
without question, the most entitled sports town in the united states; i revel in every LA defeat, except the kings and clippers.
as for my heat, if you guys thought they hated us the LAST couple years, well you ain't seen nothing yet.
celtics looked old and angry. we put up 120 on them with the best player in the game NOT EVEN PLAYING in the 4th quarter.. lol.
looks like lewis might be back to his old form, miller looked great, and allen made some athletic shots as well.
deepest team in the league, best bench, best defense, and the best player on the planet.
like i said months ago, good luck with that "one and done" BS, baby jesus.
it's going to be a LONG season for anyone not a heat fan..

WE SHAVE BEARDS, WE SHAVE POINTS!!

http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/10/30/3074666/coaches-arrested-over-betting.html

philosophical, social and cultural centers of the communiteeees- PEE WEE FOOTBALL!!!

(real) dave,

it is not gonna be a long season for non-heat fans, young man; people who root for certain teams back their teams and enjoy watching them even if the don't wind up with the trophy. indiana is gonna have a good season, clipper fans who are playoff-starved read that their teamhas a shot (you who does not revel in clipper defeats seemingly enjoys their wins or even being competitive), and the exploits of the suposedly "unathletic (means he's white)" kevin love will enjoy his play and stats. for most fans who realize that there is only one champion, rooting/following those who won't win the last game of the season is part of being a fan. i have been a fan of the warriors since they had lewis lloyd, enjoyed the year they went wild in the playoffs, and will be happy for every win or close game against the "giants" of the NBA. fans of frontrunners just because they are fdrontrunners (yankees, celtics and packers of my youth) make me puke.

Yeah real dave Lebron went all crampy again in the 4th quarter he does that a lot if you notice.

Looks like the love fest for LeBron is in full force on ESPN with all of the suck ups listening to him talk about himself in the third person.

You are tight ladave it will be a long season listening to this crap.

shadow Alex Smith is doing it with smoke and mirrors kudos to Harbaugh for making him into a serviceable NFL QB but he is nothing more than a game manager and I think our defense will prove that when we play them this year.

Heat looked good, you could tell Wade still doesn't have his burst yet, look forward to seeing this team once they develop some chemistry!

Doubt they'll ever get to a set rotation, if Spoelstra couldn't settle on 8-9 guys last year there's no way he's going to be able to do it with so many options out there on the wing.

Boston's done, KG and Pierce don't have the juice, they're a year late to blowing it up and rebuilding around Rondo.

Lakers have a lot of work to do. They brought in Nash to run the offense, they need to let him run the offense.

Hey Cote, you posted a funny caricature of Romney in honor of Halloween, here's one of your presidente as pinnochio..

http://cloud.varight.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Obama-Liar.jpg

this is for lying to the American people and the cover up of the murder of 4 americans on american soil (a US embassy)..

Full court press on Nash and he's gassed that team does have a lot of work to do.

Boston is done Kazaam really after one game how completely premature that statement is but I guess it's fair play because I have said the Ravens are done and am sticking to it.

I said it last year Big Baby, I was wrong but only because Garnett found the fountain of less elderly at the 5 late in the year.

Garnett still has the juice but I don't believe his body will hold out for 82 games at center, 36 year old bodies aren't made to do that.

Hurts to say because he's their leader but Pierce should have been moved, he's a defensive liability and his timely flailing fadeaway just isn't reliable enough anymore.

If nothing else they would symbolically be handing the reins over to Rondo to see if he's a guy they can build around. As great a player as he is he has a lot to be desired in the leadership department.

Their bench might be deep enough to give those guys rest for the playoffs if they are winning they can limit those guys minutes to the 20's maybe for many games and have them rested but no time is not on their side.

Lakers debut last night....."Bad team man, bad fuckin' team."

Can Jeff Green play any center? I don't think they're going to get much out of Darko, Fab Melo could be a real wildcard.

Dave, there's no reveling in Tinsel Town quite like seeing the Trojans take gas, followed closely by the Dodgers taking gas, and then the Raiders taking gas, although technically they're in Oakland but who cares I still get wood when they take gas.

Not sure Center matters that much anymore except if you are the Knicks.

Wow are the Lakers too old to compete for a championship they look creakier than Boston does.

It matters when you're playing a team with a center, that's for sure.

I'm not sold on small ball, only reason the Heat can pull it off is Wade and LeBron defend the rim like big men.

Story might be different if they had faced the Lakers in the Finals last season.

Doc and Spoelstra seem to be sold on small ball most of the league does it seems it's all kick outs and 20 foot jumpers now the league has changed we will see if the Knicks old school approach works.

I will say that when Boston had Perkins he made a huge difference against LA when they won the title in 2008.

They would have won it agian if he wasn't a DNP for game 7 in 2009 (yes it's true OC and Woodcock).

Yes Heat have the advantage of having LeBron play so many positions.

I think it's more a case that there not enough true old school effective post up centers anymore for some reason.

Doc has been saying for years that it is a "make or miss league" not sure if he is advocating small ball by saying that but maybe.

Yea, that was Riley's point - since there are only a few centers at any given time you can dump the ball down to and run offense through them, you're better off putting more talent on the court and not running out another big man who can't score.

But that ignores the fact that a dominant center can score at will and dominate the boards unless you put a big body on him defensively. Heat have 6 fouls in Pittman and Joel Anthony and no one else.

If they don't repeat it'll be because some team dominates them inside and they don't have enough bodies to throw down there.

Doc Rivers means that fans always play the result - run a given play and if they make the shot it was a good play, if the miss it it was a bad one.

I've seen this movie before. I saw the marque guard take vacation from his usual smile. The lackluster body language. The short answers to the media. In short, not having any fun. The year was 1982 and the player, coach and team were Magic Johnson, Paul Westhead, and the L.A. Lakers.

Every fan, columnist and basketball pundit knew that Magic and the Lakers were frustrated in running a stagnant, no-run, control type offense which did not take advantage of arguably, the most talented team in the NBA.

Fast forward 30 years, and we can see the same thing. Coach Mike Brown has installed something called a "Princeton" offense and the players look as excited as going to see the doc for a rectal probe. Steve Nash was gloom, as was Kobe, as was the rest of the team.

Someone please explain to me why on earth would you want to take away Steve Nash's fastbreak talents, big man Dwight Howard's ability to finish and subjugate them into a half court offense.

Trust me on this one. Mike Brown days are numbered.

Saw both games, both the Heat and Celtics will improve. Both teams have gotten better players. As long as LeBron stays healthy they will continue to win. Enjoy, Heat fans.

Loved that 3-14 FT's from Dwight OC have fun with that.

That's always been my concern, BB. Ask Kazaam about it, back when we were hashing around best Center, and all that Bynum, Howard talk.

I stated back then that Laker fans had seen enough of bad free throw shooting Centers. KAZAAM!

Hack a Dwight?

Wow, sounds like a supreme overreaction to Spo's coinage of 'positionless basketball', which is the exact same thing as small ball and completely inappropriate for a team with Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol.

This sounds terrible, I'd say replace Brown with Eddie Jordan but apparently Jordan was hired to help Brown install the Princeton offense!

Mike Brown needs to take a break to spend more time with Stan Van Gundy's family.

Love this article, this is what I've been saying about putting together a Super Bowl winning team.

Get a great quarterback. Get pass rushers to disrupt the other team's quarterback.

Run the ball and stop the run will keep you in every game, but it's a passing league and you won't win four games in a row against contenders unless you can move the ball down the field at the end for a score.

Mike B? He's the Obama of the NBA. The Lakers need to get a white coach in there promptly. Where's the White Knight when you need him?

Yep, Kaz. Did more research and indeed. Brown brought Jordan in to turn the Lakers into the Cavs or Wizards. Not good.

Woodcock, I would take Doc Rivers over Brown in a nano second.

Aside, it's not a b/w thing. We had Leslie Nielsen and that didn't exactly work.

Well that article says Kobe wanted Jordan and the Princeton offense and that it might actually help centers.

Don't know enough about it but it'll be interesting to watch the Lakers figure it out this year.
