NEW VIDEO! THIS IS NOT A FIRE SALE-* Visit YouTube/TheGregCote for my latest The View From Miami video, on why this week's two Marlins trades were smart (with an asterisk). All six videos I've done so far are posted.
[1) It is THURSDAY, JULY 26. Join us on Twitter @gregcote. 2) Happy for ex-Canes coach Randy Shannon catching on as linebackers coach at Texas Christian. 3) A belated R.I.P. to Sherman Hemsley, whose George character (left) in 'The Jeffersons' could strut a pimp-walk better than anybody not wearing a purple felt hat]
Juicy!: The Dodgers visit Miami for three games August 10-12 and the crowd reaction to Hanley Ramirez will be interesting. Mostly cheers? Mostly boos? Maybe the poll results below will offer a hint. Click on Good Riddance for my newest column, on the departure of Hanley. and on Train Wreck for my previous column, on the Marlins' nightmare season.
MARLINS TRADE HANLEY RAMIREZ (THAT'S GOOD), BUT DON'T GET MUCH FOR HIM (THAT'S BAD): Hanley Ramirez (right) became the Dodgers' problem just past 3 a.m. in the East yesterday when the news began to break that the Marlins had sent to Ramirez and reliever Randy Choate packing for Los Angeles. What's headed out doesn't bother me. Hanley has shown three years of diminishing returns and a continuing attitude issue. He was hitting .246. They tried to build a team around Ramirez but he wasn't up to the role. It was time to move on, as I say in this video on my YouTube channel, filmed early last evening prior to the trade. As for Choate leaving? He was a spot-role mid-relief guy with an expiring contract. No biggie. The problem with this trade is that, with about six teams reportedly interested in Ramirez, one would think the Marlins could have gotten more in return
than what they did: 22-year-old rookie starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (1-6, 4.15 ERA) and 22-year-old minor-league pitcher Scott McGough, both righties. Eovaldi is pictured at left. As with any trade involving prospects, this deal will look much better if either incoming young pitcher turns out great, of course. For now, though, it sort of seems like the Marlins just gave Hanley Ramirez away. L.A. agreed to assume his remaining contract, so it's a salary-dump for Miami. But does it make the team better? L.A. was the only interested team that would pick up Hanley's entire remaining salary, so the presumption is Miami might have gotten more in return from another team but opted for the financial relief instead. Piggybacked onto the earlier trade of pitcher Anibal Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante to Detroit for three young prospects, the Marlins definitely are retooling. Fire sale? Not yet, but it could begin to feel like that if, say, Josh Johnson is the next to go. Certain players ike Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Reyes should be off-limits and the club should make that clear to clam fans. Meantime, weigh in on the departure of Hanley Ramirez. Poll open. Votes welcome.
Shame on Showtime: How ridiculously lame and lazy of Showtime's The Franchise to not re-tool last night's episode to center around the Hanley Ramirez trade. They had time. The show could have been fresh and right-now topical; instead, the episode was full of fluff 'n filler: Ozzie Guillen's family, Edwards Mujica's family ... yawn! The only memorable quote for me was owner Jeffrey Loria lamenting of his team, "I don't think these guys have any sense of urgency."
RICKY WILLIAMS KEEPS PUTTING THE 'ODD' IN ODYSSEY: The life story of Ricky Williams gets stranger
just when you thought that impossible. The latest: The retired Dolphin and his Ricky Williams Foundation are now heavily involved (spiritually and also financially) with a controversial organization -- many would say cult -- called Access Consciousness. Williams is a "facilitator" for the group and teaches classes for it. Its founder, Gary Douglas, is on record saying he believes he can heal wounds with his bare hands and read minds among other claims. The Austin (Tex.) Chronicle just did an interesting piece on all this. Click on Ricky's New Chapter for that story, which includes audio of an extensive interview with Williams and Douglas. Williams' ongoing search for enlightenment is admirable on some level, and I won't judge the motives or legitimacy of Douglas beyond suggesting they seem questionable. I wish Ricky and his bank account well on this venture, and hope he has trusted advisers in his life who are doing their job.
Poll result: Penn State punishment about right: We asked in the prior blogpost how you felt about Penn State's punishment over the Jerry Sandusky scandal (you can still vote), and 52.1 percent said it was about right. Another 26.8% called it too harsh and 21.1% too lenient.
Click back. Will be updating/adding much more to this latest blogpost...

Look, I'm glad Hanloaf is gone. Needed to be done. I don't even care about the inevitability that Hanloaf will now turn it on again and probably win 2 or 3 MVPs with the Dodgers. (And, of course, we can count on him torching the Marlins for the rest of his career.) He's a loafer, a terrible human being, a cancerous polyp on the anus of humanity. But, I'm sorry, I don't care how low his stock is. This Nathan Loser guy, his ERA is higher than the price of supreme unleaded gas where I live. And considering his ERA is infinitely better than this Jacob Turner bum from Detroit... Great. And don't give me this "they're young" argument. Don't give me "sample size". Plenty of young pitchers don't struggle anywhere close to this.
As for Josh Johnson, I don't trust him to stay healthy, either. I won't sob too much when he's traded to Texas. I'll be stunned if he makes it to the end of 2013 without having another serious injury. He's had how many injuries already? Get someone to take his contract while you can. But what will they get in return? As John McGinley said in "Point Break".... SQUAT!!!
This is not only a fire sale, but it is flat-out intentional sabotage. This is slash-and-burn to the nth degree. Chainsaw Al Dunlap would be proud.
The Art Dealer and the Latent Lawyer haven't only given up on this season. They've given up, period. This season, next season, the season after that, forever.
We tore down the Orange Bowl... for this? (Not that the Hurrican'ts are any better. In fact, they're probably worse.)

If they end up trading Johnson they are likely in full rebuild mode.
If you do can you trade him to The Red Sox?

I still call them The Florida Marlins I can never remember to say Miami.

Posted this on the Marlins blog but applies here....
I am now going to the game this afternoon BECAUSE they traded Hanley. I just called into work "sick" because I'm so excited. He was a mediocre player who thought he was good. NEVER did anything in or for the community besides supply local drinking establishments with excellent customer support. Good riddance and thank you Marlins management! I will be there to support the team from now on.

What is fraud? If you give us money for a stadium we will what? We will take even more of your money wasn't the sales pitch I remember.
Sad and people who give money and go to the games are the real suckers
Posted by: Scuba | July 25, 2012 at 10:35 AM
I agree with the previous post in that Hanley seemed to be more headache than help. No big loss. And I also agree that you're likely to see his career completely resurrected under Don Mattingly's tutelage. And THAT, to me, is the biggest problem here in Florida. How many players do we have who are underperforming? Reyes, Ramirez, JJ, Bell, Cogs, Gaby, Buck . . . who am I forgetting? Who are the ones who perform reasonably well? People who come from other organizations, like Ruggiano and Lee.
It sure looks to me like we have NO coaching, at the major league or minor league levels, because we seem incapable of doing anything but ruining players. And then they go to other places, where they are mentored and taught, and players like Mike Lowell and Cameron Maybin and Miguel Cabrera and Ryan Dempster become stars! For the life of me, I cannot understand why we spent all this money for players, but won't spend SQUAT to help them improve.
Here we are, not even out of JULY, and it's already "Wait until next year" . . . so we wait for the next round of "can't miss" prospects to go bust. We are becomig the Oakland Raiders of baseball: a never-ending carousel of "new starts" and continued failure. I'm tired of it. There are better ways to spend my time and money than watching a bunch of underachievers make lo vista signs at each other and grin while they lose.
Posted by: DanthefadingMarlingfan | July 25, 2012 at 10:37 AM
And it'd not that they traded him...it's that they got nothing at all in return and they could have got more. It was all about money.
Posted by: Scuba | July 25, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Hamley's career averages are outstanding this guy was a very good player from around 2006-09'.
His career OPS is .873 not a stat geek but that's good.
Can he ever play like he used to is the question.
Interesting because we traded him and A. Sanchez for Beckett and the same thing has happened to him.
Former All Star now a pile of goo the last few years go figure.
Woodcock baseball is a great sport hitting a round ball with a round bat is not easy you should watch sometime.
Posted by: Big Baby | July 25, 2012 at 10:44 AM
I'm very happy that the $100 that I paid Cheo El Curandero to put a hex on the Marlins after that ass wipe Ozzie opened his trap about Fidel is working beautifully. In my master plan the Marlins are back to drawing 1,200 a game in two years and they dissolve the team and enlarge the stadium for the Hurricanes. The spirit of the Orange Bowl will not die. Screw the Marlins.

Big Baby, I enjoy playing baseball, and even going to a night game at Anaheim, much better talent in the stands than on the field, but the game is an interminable bore to watch, especially on TV. Not a game for the 21st century, way too slow for my pace. I like to play chess but I wouldn't pay half a penny to watch it on TV.
Posted by: Mr. Woodcock | July 25, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Not a Dodger or Angel fan Woodcock?
I cannot understand the concept of liking a college football team more than a pro baseball team.
Totally foreign to me.
That's why I live in the Boston area I guess people are very passionate about baseball here.
Hey we have 3 Div 1 college football teams here in New England now though woo hoo progress!
Posted by: Big Baby | July 25, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I used to follow baseball much more then now. Like Woodcock, rather watch my chubby neighbor in her pool then 9 innings of baseball.
Posted by: Jimbo | July 25, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Big Baby,
josh johnson cant pitch more than six innings-if he does it becomes a disaster. hanley ramirez hits lights out in dodger stadium, so for him fine; but the foaming at the mouth over this guy being the best SS in baseball that was occuring a couple of years ago also "made me puke". couldn't pick up a grounder hit right at him, and only generosity by the officila scorer kepr him from the 40+ errors he contributed every year. whatever the bats said, ramirez and uggla was the worst DP combination in baseball. and again, the owners bilked the city out of millions of dollars for a stadium that will house a lousy team and has hosed the taxpayers.
Posted by: the shadow knows | July 25, 2012 at 11:36 AM
New stadium, same Marlins. The guy who needs to be gone from this team is the Manager. Ozzie is an idiot and an embarrassment.
Posted by: John Steel | July 25, 2012 at 11:37 AM
You said it John Ozzie used to be a good manager back in the day but he does not seem to be any longer.
He was a bad choice for that team.

Back when we were still living in a civilized society this incident with the Greek Olympic team could have been easily resolved by having that cute blond blow the Greek sports minister and make a cute apology on TV.

I'm a Giants fan and like the Dodgers as much as I like SC.
Posted by: Mr. Woodcock | July 25, 2012 at 11:44 AM
That's ok shadow we will take our chances right now we barely have one pitcher who can go five innings.
For about 5 years Hanley was probably the best offensive shortstop in the league.
He seems to have lost interest in the game maybe he needs a change in scenery.
Not sure he can play short effectively anymore though where is LA planning on playing him?
Posted by: Big Baby | July 25, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Memo to Giants fan letting Cody Ross walk was a mistake thanks though good player I hope we resign him.
Posted by: Big Baby | July 25, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Hanley's a great player, Ozzie's a great manager. The Marlins and especially David Samson are criminal f*ck faced liars who sell off players as soon as the fans come to know and like them.
They'll never get consistent attendance with that business model, never pay back a penny to the city for that stadium, which is appropriately becoming rust stained and depressing halfway through the first season.

They saw the writing on the wall and dumped him now they are in the playoff hunt with Robin Ventura.

Kaz, the UM trustees are going to drop your aunt and bring in that buxom honey blond from Alabama who hired Saban. She will make the correct decision and move the team to where something called the Marlins currently try to play.

the guy who made the 1st post doesnt know what hes talking about. the prospects we got in return, especially in the detroit trade, are good. since LA was the only team that would pick up hanleys contract in its entirety, they gave us lesser prospects in return, nut nathan isnt bad, and will develope. and hanley will sure as hell never win a mvp, let alone multiple ones, in LA. to conclude, the guy who wrote the 1st post is a fool

Naples jack, you scared buddy?..it seems that way to me, could it be the great beli-cheat may have made a mistake?...8-5 could make the team and if that happens there is no reason why he won't score on you guys, you guys suck on defense.

Hanley wasn't producing. Never understood the Hate on him as a Person. I'm disappointed in him, but that doesn't give me or someone else reason to hate. Has he been Arrested? Has he ever insulted a Fan? No, For his talent and ability he should be Consistently better that's about it. Okay crew,
So it's a slow news day. Olympics starting out tomorrow and no doubt we'll have another theme on berets. Personally, I like track and field, gymnastics (cause I was one), swimming, and just about everything else but for those sports which we see all the time -- basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc. What!? do we really need to know which country...ehr...athletes are the best!?
Those sports really don't need to be represented in an age when their yearly competition pretty much defines it.

Jz's a ballah listen to the Black Album still holds up pretty well 10 years later.

Oye, I told you not to move to Texas. All they have there are steers and queers and you don't have no horns on your head. Jay Z, come on bro, that guy isn't even the best artist in his own house! I knew that you were trending left with the move to Texas. The next thing you'll be wearing "guapitas" one size too small like that rump ranger Rick Perry. "Here's mine, great video to boot." No jodas, brother!
Let me show you a much better one dude.

Woodcock - hyping 'Beyonce' and calling OC a queer.
OK then...
Posted by: I am Kazaam | July 26, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Woodcock rap ain't music?
You are old.
Posted by: Big Baby | July 26, 2012 at 10:15 AM
Kazaam I seem to recall you ripping The Beastie Boys recently, a low point for you also.
Posted by: Big Baby | July 26, 2012 at 10:16 AM
I understand the Marlins bashing but in every situation, you have to look at the big picture and let it play out.
it happened with Ireland/Dolphins when he signed D Garrard, everybody and their mother was calling the guy a dummy, looking back it was a good sound move since they where planning on drafting a QB in the draft, now that position is one of strenght for the Dolphins.
The Marlins just traded Hanley, so what, he was not producing and we got rid of his 14 mil salary, if you notice we are getting pitching back, you win with pitching and defense.
also, they will have money available in next year's free agency to go after hitter's ( Hamilton maybe ? )
my point is you have to let it play out, I'm sure there is a plan in place, they are not stupid , heck the took the city of miami to the crapper with the deal they made for the park.
I won't talk about the Marlins again, its football time now.

You're all old. And lame. Like the Beastie Boys.
Posted by: I am Kazaam | July 26, 2012 at 10:19 AM
POSITION OF STRENGTH???????
You've lost your mind FZB.
Posted by: I am Kazaam | July 26, 2012 at 10:20 AM
FZB you are right The Marlins are a well run organization for the most part.
Good scouts, good GM.
It took guts to make the moves they did clearly building for the future thereby admitting offseason free agent mistakes.
They dumped 37 mil over 2 years in getting rid of Hanley might look smart by doing so.
Posted by: Big Baby | July 26, 2012 at 10:24 AM
It is a position of strength.
They have 2 qb's who can win games on the roster right now.
Both good moves by Ireland.

OC Dolphin,
my musical era? up until little feat, around the mid 70s when lowell george died. since then, on fabiola single- "deliriose" from about 83. at this point the only group i could consider listening to or even going to see would be the derek trucks band. that boy can play the axe, has great singers and picks solid material to perform. and count me in on "rap aint music"- the vocals are spoken not sung, and the "music" has no melody or harmony-only a "rythm section" of bass and drums. "the last poets" of the late gil-scott heron were doing this in the early 70s.

Is there a team in the NFL with a worse quarterback situation than the Dolphins in 2013?
Is there any other team whose top two quarterbacks are career journeymen with no future?

GOTTA USE SPELL CHECK!!
"rhythm section" "one great single"
Posted by: the shadow knows | July 26, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Ok, lets let a self described musical expert, Tubesteak Dave, decide once and for all who is the best music act. All I have to say about rappers is that even though Tubesteak and the Beatles can't read music at least they can read and write which is more than what these rappers can do.
Posted by: Mr. Woodcock | July 26, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Shadow, I'll have to listen to his band's music. I've seen him playing with the Allman Brothers and he does play a great guitar.
Posted by: Mr. Woodcock | July 26, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Let's face it most people over 40 aren't going say that they like rap.
I am the exception to that rule.
Woodcock producing and playing rap music is a fairly elaborate process that requires talent period.
You may not like that sort of talent but that is your opinion.
Lil Wayne is one scary dude though I will say that but he is talented.

Rap makes me want to rap the mutherf***ers blasting that s*** in the car next to me. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! Problem is they're all probably packin' so I mind my business...
Posted by: dukey | July 26, 2012 at 10:49 AM
There are some extremely talented lyricists and producers in hip hop who make music that millions love.
If you can't appreciate it, you're in no position to judge it. Be like a Dolphins fan judging quarterbacks.

Sadly when I mention Hendrix to most blacks they look at me like I have two heads or only seem to remember he took drugs & died as result of drugs. S*** I tell them don't you realize the time period in which he was playing. Drugs were like cigarettes and you even had a Harvard used car salesman singing it praises as the ultimate "good" drug on earth. Come on...
Posted by: dukey | July 26, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Well said Baby. There is no doubt that these guys might be very good at rapping but rapping is not music.
Posted by: Mr. Woodcock | July 26, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Hendrix was a genius no one really has come close to his level of talent since then.
Listening to Band Of Gypsies still makes me say wow.
Posted by: Big Baby | July 26, 2012 at 10:59 AM
someone pissed in Naples Jack's prune juice, calm down please.
duke, if they're packing a knife, you need a gun, if they are packing a pistol, you need an 88 on top of your Yugo.
woodcock, rappers read from a teleprompter supplied by the federal government.
bobby bowden was on the paterno bandwaggon until someone pointed out bobby's all time wins = #1 with pa joe's record erased. some think grambling's robinson deserves the all time record but... you gotta coach at a real school first.
