I LOVE A PARADE: Took in the Heat victory parade and arena celebration today. Click on The Power of Sports for my new column on it, online now and shipping to Tuesday's paper. It was not a perfect day. Lots of fans disappointed the parade moved along too quickly, and other complaining there was no culminating appearance on the arena steps (as there was in 2006). Still, a great day for Miami, and a reminder of the power of sports to bring together a community.
PARTYING LIKE AN NBA CHAMPION: Heat players, family and friends partied all night at a jammed Club LIV in the Fontainebleau after winning the NBA championship, running up a tab of close to $250,000. (Then again, LeBron James is the world's fourth-highest-paid athlete at $54 million a year counting endorsements. A quarter-mil to him is, mathematically, around $235 to a guy making $50,000 a year). The public portion of the party had the stars up on stage, with LeBron and Dwyane Wade even briefly grabbing the mic to rap. LeBron wore a shirt showing his likeness with vampire teeth. Interesting. That was last year's image. Now I think he's the hero who slays the vampire and saves us all. Click HERE to see a few minutes of the Heat's pricey partying Heat in a video courtesy Seth Browarnik and Worldredeye.com.
POLL: WHICH TWO SOUTH FLORIDA PRO SPORTS TITLES ARE MOST SPECIAL TO YOU?: Greater Miami now has six major professional sports crowns: Dolphins in 1972 and '73, Marlins in 1997 and 2003, and Heat in 2006 and 2012. Here I invite you to vote for the TWO that are the most special to you. Use whatever criteria you wish: Historical importance, most fun, made you most proud, whatever. Vote for your top two and then say why...
Poll note: I understand the timing of this poll greatly favors the title the Heat just won. But the support being shown for the most distant of the six titles also shows fans are able to step back and vote how they feel.
SANDUSKY TO LEARN WHAT A REAL 'TICKLE MONSTER' IS: Defrocked Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, the demon pedophile convicted of 45 of 48 counts of abusing young boys, deserves every minute and more of whatever sentence he gets. It will be tantamount to a life sentence for a man 68, after which I'd convince myself there is a hell just to picture Sandusky in it. His lack of admission, contrition and remorse compounds the feeling about him. It is difficult to imagine his life from here won't be doubly awful if he is allowed in the general prison population. I am told pedophiles don't do well in there. One imagines the "Tickle Monster" will be getting what he's been giving; call it the heavy hand of karma. Except, in prison, I don't they they call it tickling.
WHY MESSI HERE WAS NOT SUCH A BIG DEAL: I'm a soccer fan. I appreciate Lionel Messi as the best futbol player on Earth (at least the best goal-scorer). And I respect that thousands who watched the other night at Dolphins stadium were excited. I don't get why this was seen as such a big event, though. It was not a bona fide game between national teams or premier club teams. It wasn't a bona fide game, period. It was an international all-star game that meant nothing. Remember the farce of those NBA touring all-star games during the lockout? This was the soccer version, complete with no semblance of defense .
MARLINS' ROCK BOTTOM KEEPS GETTIN ROCK BOTTOMER: Marlins blew a big lead and last night and lost in 10 innings, making it 16 lossses in the past 19 games. When you consider the Muhammad Ali/Opening Night fiasco, Ozzie's Fidel Castro mess, the team's complete overshadowing by the Heat title run, smaller than expected average attendance and now this June swoon, the long-awaited Year of the New Ballpark has pretty much been a mess so far for the Marlins.
CLEVELAND JUST CAN'T LET IT GO: Cleveland's WTAM-1100 radio has a "You Still Suck, LeBron!" promo (click here) on its website inviting liseners to agree with that sentiment. When last I checked, almost 3,000 people had. Stay classy, Cleveland!
Click back. Will be updating/adding to this latest blogpost...

What? oops.. South Floridas NFL team has sucked for so long fans can't recall how significant a SB victory is let alone an undefeated season. Heat lost most significant South Florida sports title by virtually 1%. Sad very, very sad. Should have never come close to Fins early 70s accomplishments.

OC..
lebron put up numbers that have only been done 2 other times in history; magic and duncan.
he was defending at multiple positions relentlessly as well.
had lebron had the numbers durant did, the media would be using the word "choke".
it's not that the thunder didn't show up, didn't want it, etc. all BS, like mark cuban said.
it is an insult to what this heat team accomplished.
WE SHUT THEM DOWN.
PERIOD.
so typical of a laker fan to choose durant over lebron because he "scored more".
have fun with that scoring stuff; NO ASSISTS from the point guard, turnovers, and a player with durant's skill not rebounding and settling for jump shots.
we'll be in the finals again next year, and laker fans will still be wondering why no one wants to play with the ball hog, wondering why he can't play off the ball, (another reason wade is almost as good as kobe; HE adjusted his game), AND coming up with more excuses on why durant is better than lebron.

david, stop it already. I've given the Heat their dues. They are and deserve to be the champions. Also, my preference over the two has less to do about scoring than it does about other factors. Where have I listed my reason why? Show me where it says scoring. If you must know, there is no one reason, but a compilation. LeBron is an awesome dude, but I think his "style" of play is grinding away his body. By contrast, Durant is just a pure shooter. Easy stuff that should translate to a longer career. That to me is key. Scoring!?.....please!
Lastly, the last time I checked the Lakers had five championships within a span of 12 years. That's almost half, buddy. I've got enough championships caps to last me two lifetimes, so don't look for me to be envious or jealous.
Congrats to you and other Heat fans, now let's bring on the Dolphins.

Jimbo,
To answer question, I'm moving to Austin, Tx. Can't say I'm looking forward to the, ahem, heat, but liberals have all but destroyed the California economy. One has to be a cop, firefighter, government employee stiff, a drummer (hehehe), movie star, or democrat to do well here. Entrepreneurs, mom & pops, private sector workers need not apply.

Austin is a decent area. Was there for a couple days rest while relocating from CO to LA. Got friends north of Austin in Georgetown. Good luck there.
Before everyone salivates at the thought of Uncle Chester Sandusky getting the "works" done to him.... he may never see open prison population. The system is not going to throw him in a state peniteniary like Greaterford Pa, Huntington Pa or Western Pen, Pgh - (3 very rough joints). More likely he'll be housed in a low security place with plenty of other sex offenders. Or,,, he can request protective custody, ie, segregation.

BROKEN BATS NAIL UMPIRE AND PITCHER!!!
the use of maple bats means it is only a matter of time before one splinters and kills someone on the field. as a youngster, when bats "broke" they really only cracked and did not create a real danger to the players or umpires or even guys on deck. the only time i remember a bat breaking was when one broke in san diego and lodged in steve yeager's neck, barely missing the blood vessels that would have meant his death. maple is less dense than the ash that was used for so many years, and as such means more bat surface for the same weight as ash. the "pop" in hit balls comes from the use of maple. MLB has not done anything about this very serious problem and is waiting to bury somebody before addressing this important issue. they better get to work fast.

Jimbo here'e one you will like !!
A woman who had been married three times walked into a bridal shop one day and told the sales clerk that she was looking for a wedding gown for her fourth wedding.
"Of course, madam," replied the sales clerk, "exactly what type and color dress are you looking for?"
The bride to be said: "A long frilly white dress with a veil."
The sales clerk hesitated a bit, then said, "Please don't take this the wrong way, but gowns of that nature are considered more appropriate for brides who are being married the first time - for those who are a bit more innocent, if you know what I mean? Perhaps ivory or sky blue would be nice?"
"Well," replied the customer, a little peeved at the clerk's directness, "I can assure you that a white gown would be quite appropriate. Believe it or not, despite all my marriages, I remain as innocent as a first-time bride.
You see, my first husband was so excited about our wedding, he died as we were checking into our hotel.”
"My second husband and I got into such a terrible fight in the limo on our way to our honeymoon that we had that wedding annulled immediately and never spoke to each other again."
"What about your third husband?" asked the sales clerk.
"That one was a Democrat," said the woman, "and every night for four years, he just sat on the edge of the bed and told me how good it was going to be, but nothing ever happened."

mikemizzie,
the player fromerly known as mike stanton should qualify as an "african-american". american black youth are not playing baseball- they are looking at basketball and football as more lucrative options. MLB has made a concerted effort to bring baseball back to the urban environs, but i forgot what the program is called. dontrelle, one of the great players to ever play for nay of the locals teams, is involved. he has his money, thankfully, and methinks he still is in the majors. a total ballplayer- pitches, hits, fields- who is impossible to not like.
Posted by: the shadow knows | June 24, 2012 at 01:06 PM
mikemizzie,
dontrelle was released by the phillies in may. can't understand why he doesn't try first base after finetuning his known hitting ability. just really like the guy.

OC - Durant's a terrific scorer but unless he dedicates himself to becoming an elite defender and a leader who demands more out of his teammates he's going to retire with the same number of championships as Iverson.
He'll get there but let's leave the Magic/Bird comparison with LeBron until he does.
Unless you are clinging to the defunct 'clutch gene' argument there is no aspect of Durant's game to like more than LeBron's beyond the scoring. And I'm fairly sure you said as much on the last blog post.
As to the teams, I know you like the Thunder more because you mistakenly thought their stars 'fit together' better than the Heat's. As I have said all along, the skill set matters more than the positions they play - there's more overlap in Durant/Westbrook/Harden's games than there is with James/Wade/Bosh. Point guard is not a problem for the Heat, they have the best point forward in the world. Center is another story, the Spurs would have been tough to beat.
The Thunder DID have the better supporting cast, the regular season and playoffs weren't a mirage. The difference was the Heat's stars kept driving and kicking to wide open shooters and Durant and Westbrook kept trying to do it all themselves.
The biggest surprise of the Finals to me was that Harden, Sefalosha, and Ibaka were non-factors. I've seen what those players are capable of, some of it is their fault for not stepping up, more blame should be on Durant and Westbrook for not getting them involved.
Posted by: I am Kazaam | June 24, 2012 at 03:08 PM
As much pressure was on LeBron James to improve his post up game last year there should be just as much pressure on Wade to learn to spot up shoot. It shouldn't be too hard for a player who's that good off the dribble.
When Bosh went down the Heat realized they were best when everything was going towards the basket. When he came back they incorporated him into that and had him roll off picks instead of stepping back for a wide open jumper. Turns out getting the ball around the rim is just as good as his silky smooth jump shot and it draws more fouls and offensive rebounds.
That's the formula moving forward, and with the ball in James' hands more often (as it must be) Wade needs to find a way to take advantage of James' passing beyond cuts to the hoop.

D.wade's Lack of an Outside shot could explain the reason why shane had to start at PF. Yes, I know some of U say his Defense, But JA and UD can Give u the same D at the 4 with some extra rebounding.
The way U know Anyone(Lebron) is Special is because they don't have Comparison(I think Magic said this). The Uniqueness of his Abilities. He's not MJ, Magic, Larry, or Dr.J. Lebron is Lebron. All the Greats are Unique Shaq, Kareem, Wilt.
Thats my main problem with kobe is that Kobe is a Carbon Copy of MJ. Down to the Fadeaway and Ball-hogging.
The whole bat thing. I got a way to fix it. Give everyone aluminum bats, With wood specs. It would make the game more entertaining. I know it won't happen cause baseball is all about tradition. That's why they still don't have replays on fouls or Homeruns. U guys think BB is fixed, They've been fixing baseball games for centuries.
The whole African-American in Baseball thing? Anybody that is a True fan of the game knows the decline of the Black Athlete in BB has to do with Football and Basketball, Not a Corny Race Argument. The same could be said for Boxing. Why aren't they Any Black Heavyweights? All the Good One's play Football now. HBO and ESPN have run Specials on this subject.
The Marlins have people of Dark Complexion. Hanley & Reyes are Dark Dark, Encarnacion, Stanton a little Lighter. Or are the only people that are considered Black are African-Americans?
I guess In DR Race doesn't matter in Athletic or Intellectual Skill. Black, White, Mulatto , or any other shade of Grey U come out ur Mom. What matters is U and Ur ability, Nothing Else. We don't look at A-rod any different than we look at Big Papi or Hanley. Even Sammy Sosa and his Changing Colors we still love him for Him.
Maybe that's why I'm ignorant to Racial Superiority. We are all the Same where I Come From. It's just what we do and how we Develop our Abilities that makes us Different and Special at our Profession.

Hows 'bout a Tribute to Larry Csonka complete with college & pro careers, WFL, comeback player of the year in '79, pics, interviews by those who played with him and those laid out by him. Edwin Pope should definitely be a big part of it. It could only help rejuvenate this now pussy franchise. Thank youote, it's time you

Sorry about f***ing 12:21AM Special Ed post. I thought I ditched it before displaying my 6th grade education.

WTF was that Kaz? Kaz, stick to watching your hero Sponge Bob on TV.

Duke, great idea but this guy Cote is too lazy to get off his ass and do any real work. He's been mailing it in for years. A nice piece on Csonka is the least that he could do. What he should be doing is asking the tough questions about Donna Shalala and the destruction of the University of Miami football program. Not a word out of his mouth in 8 years. So sad, maybe he's related to Kazaam and that little bitch is also Cote's aunt.

Duke, you don't have to repost jack shit. We got it the first time.

I wonder how that dashi woman knows so much about other people and races mmm.
Claims to be a member of the "superior" spelling bee race. Somehow she must have lost that gene in the sheets somewhere. As the great yogini once said:
"I just dashi'd in my diaper....but it smells like chanel #5..."

Props to the Heat, but please don't even try and tell me it equals what the Dolphins did in only their 6th year. Then to come back, win again, and go 32-2 over two seasons. There is no comparison people. If you believe there is, well, you are probably too young to have witnessed it.

it's ok, FZB. he's just mad i flushed his "the beatles suck" argument down the toilet, along with "if you don't read music, you can't play it".
stevie wonder and i laughed about that one, as we talked about his daughter..

and OC, you might wanna rethink that move. if you think southern california is liberal, you'll find austin to be, how do you guys describe it these days.. that's right, SOCIALIST!
Posted by: (the real) david in los angeles | June 25, 2012 at 02:47 AM
Don't have a problem with liberals per say, david. I have a problem with liberals dictating policy. My impression is that Austin is similar to the likes of Santa Monica. No biggie. It is still Texas with no state tax, a red state and one that is offering a six figure offer.

Thanks Woodcock, but I felt I owed repost to Zonk in this instance. It was an ah, an emotional moment...

As I've said in the past UM has been my favorite college team since beating heavily favored Nebraska in Orange Bowl. However, since they've tanked so has my interest. It is ODD that Cote has not addressed this grave injustice. It would be nice to see a HARD SPANKING piece on Ms Shalala Alayla Alola Layla... Destroying a major college powerhouse is right up there with destroying a former South Florida NFL Powerhouse.

Jimbo, I was too young to see Chuck Bednarik play but I got impression from NFL films he would have been my second favorite player. Especially the hit he put on Gifford that nearly sent Frank to the Bright Light at the End of the Tunnel for good.

Jimbo, someone spiked those strippers Long Island Iceteas with Roofies.

Greg,
The "World Soccer Masters" game was a big deal because it gave the vast majority of people in attendance the opportunity to see their idol, in person. For many, it may be the only time they get to be so close. It obviously was a soft match, but it was entertaining nonetheless with a good amount of trick plays.
Posted by: Quijote | June 25, 2012 at 08:49 AM
duke - glad to have you off board, if only more horrible unaffiliated local bandwagoners would join you! Check out the UM blog on this paper sometime, it's a simmering cesspool of the absolute worst fans in the nation.
There's a reason you won't find an article in the Birmingham Times about how Alabama's new president http://president.ua.edu/ is going to affect the football program.
Head coaches run football programs, not university presidents. Anyone who knows anything about college football or even just how a college works knows that. Obviously that doesn't apply to most UM fans.
And before you even say it quijote - those same fans are your alumni base. Best of luck in your 'inevitable rise'.

And I can fill in the rest of the conversation so we can just skip it:
Horrible unaffiliated bandwagon fan - you love the troll Shalala! She's your aunt!
Actual UM fan - if you believe Shalala destroyed the program you have to also believe that Larry Coker and Randy Shannon were good coaches that were sabotaged by her.
Horrible unaffiliated bandwagon fan - Um, you love the troll Shalala! She's your aunt!
Actual UM fan - you got me. I'm a sucker for cankles.

Shalala is the President of the School not of UM Athletics. Yes u can blame her for the other AD she hires. The AD is the one that Recommends & Hires The Coaches for the School President. Since we got that New guy to Run things he's been cleaning house and Hiring good Coaches. UM Basketball men and Women, UM football. He might even get rid of Jim Morrison if he doesn't preform to the Standard he's Set. And Jim is an Institution, but it does look like the game is passing him by recently.
Oh yeah The "one who knows Nothing", Ur right my Sh!t Don't Stink it smell like Flowers. But if Ur going to Criticize the Dashi at least stick to the Race I'm Using at hand. I said "Let's Say" I'm of the Superior Spelling Race. Everyone here knows I'm of the Superior Baseball Hitting/Pitching Race. U know the Race that Comes in all the Colors and is about 60% of MLB Rosters

r. duke,
although that crushing hit sidelined frank gifford for the next season, he did come back, methinks as a flanker instead of a halfback. everyone on our blogsite who pines for the days of larry csonka running wild over and through tacklers must be less than enchanted, as is yours truly, with the nowadays NFL- touch football with pads: absurd amounts of passes per game, nobody save pittsburgh, baltimore and the 49ers even bothering to run the ball, and the absence of what football is supposed to be- a game of blocking and tackling. watch the highlights of SBs featuring the cowboys of landry, dolphins of shula and steelers of noll and see what football should look like.

Kazaam, go back to watching the Sponge Bob marathon on Nickleodeon.
Dave, where are my tickets? My daughter already bought some rope to tie her right hand behind her back for her fight with you. She says that after she kicks your ass she will make you stand up on the corner of Hollywood and Vine dressed like John Lennon in Sergeant Pepper gear playing a ukulele singing Yea, yea, yea.
To show you I'm not a bad guy Dave, I've made arrangements with the Nuevo Herald staff to start a campaign to collect money for your future. So far two Cuban rafters have donated 23 cents and I chipped in a saw buck. I wan't to make sure that you have money to buy ramen when you turn 50.

Shadow it's currently not the game I grew up with either.
Oh well we will still watch anyway right?
It is slowly becoming a less violent game and I don't necessarily like it that way.

shadow,
I know we've had this discussion plenty of times before, but our world is governed by change. It is always fun to glimpse back on how something once was - i.e., our hairlines, belt size, old stomping grounds, etc. However, to argue that (fill in the ___________) would be better were it to return being like those earlier days is just plain silly. We may not always like the newer version, but filtering current realities through lenses of "how it should be" serves only in comparative discussion.
