G1: NEW ENGLAND 38, DOLPHINS 24: HENNE PLAYS WELL, BUT BRADY TORCHES DOLPHINS: Final: Chad Henne passes for 416 yards in losing cause but Miami pass defense is utterly embarrassed by Tom Brady, who passes for 517 yards -- fifth highest total in NFL history. Henne was not the problem tonight. Almost everything else was. What a bizarre game overall from Miami's standpoint. So much to be encouraged about from the new offense and especially from Henne. But so much discouraging from what was supposed to be the strength of the team -- the defense. ..... 4Q: Dolphins within 38-24 with 3:39 left after Reggie Bush 2-yard TD run. ..... Brady to Welker 99-yard TD pass with 5:44 left. ..... Henne to Davone Bess 7-yard apparent TD pass overturned on review and then Miami misses on 4th-down fade pattern. ..... Pats add short FG for a 14-point lead with 11:02 to play. ..... 3Q: Pats with a now safe-ish 28-17 lead in last seconds of quarter on Brady 1-yard TD flip to TE Aaron Hernandez. ..... Dolphins settle for 20-yard FG and drw within 21-17 after reaching NE 1 then stalling. That hurts. ...... Brady to Wes Welker for 2-yard TD strike and 21-14 Pats lead, mid-third. ..... Jared Odrick INT and 40-yard return off a Benny Sapp deflection sets up 10-yard Hene strike to Brian Hartline in end zone. Miami knots it 14-14 early in third. ..... Half: Chad Henne good (11-15, 137 yards). Tom Brady better (14-22, 211, 1 TD). ..... 2Q: Pats wide right on 48-yard FG try in closing seconds. ..... Wes Welker just dropped a bomb from Brady after Tom had about a month and a half to sit in the pocket. ..... TE Rob Gronkowski, 10-yard score and 14-7 Pats lead in first minute of second quarter. The word is gravity. Dolfans coming back down to Earth after elation of that opening drive. ...... 1Q: Pats driving as first quarter ends. ..... Pats answer quickly with 7-7 tie on 78-yard scoring drive finished by Benjarvus Green-Ellis 4-yard run. Big play: Tom Brady 46-yard pass to Matthew Slater over Vontae Davis. ..... Chad Henne 9-yard TD run on a QB draw finishes a brilliant 84-yard opening drive that eats half the quarter. Astonishingly, the 7-0 leads comes on Miami's first season-opening TD drive since 2000. Henne 6-for-7 for 77 yards in series, the only incompletion a drop. ..... Pregame: Dolphins win toss, will receive. ..... Very impressive pregame ceremony with Fergie on anthem, B-2 stealth bomber flyover and "U-S-A!" chant by crowd. ..... uch a weird juxtaposition. Tony Sparano marching the field during program warmups as a carnival swirls around him. Sideline populated by a swarm including Dan Marino, Hank Williams Jr., Fergie and the newly unwed Marc Anthony. Let's hope the Dolphins love winning as much as owner Stephen Ross loves celebrity. ..... Original post: The statement I have in mind is not, "Oops, we did it again." The statement I have in mind is, "Miami can be a factor in the AFC East." Or, "The home-field advantage is back." Or, "This new offense really is exciting." Or, "This is the Chad Henne we've been waiting for." If Dolfans can make at least a couple of those statements during and after tonight's opener, it will have been a good night for Miami. Y'all know by now I'm on record predicting a Dolphins upset win, 31-27. Hopefully I'm not the one whose statement is "Oops" as midnight approaches.
