G1: New England 38, Dolphins 24 (Final); Pass defense embarrassed! Brady torches Miami for 517 yards

[Our fourth season of the DOLFAN SATISFACTION METER postgame polls launches tonight. Poll is now open in seperate post just above this one. Vote now! Also, join us on Twitter @gregcote].

1aa1dolopen G1: NEW ENGLAND 38, DOLPHINS 24: HENNE PLAYS WELL, BUT BRADY TORCHES DOLPHINS: Final: Chad Henne passes for 416 yards in losing cause but Miami pass defense is utterly embarrassed by Tom Brady, who passes for 517 yards -- fifth highest total in NFL history. Henne was not the problem tonight. Almost everything else was. What a bizarre game overall from Miami's standpoint. So much to be encouraged about from the new offense and especially from Henne. But so much discouraging from what was supposed to be the strength of the team -- the defense. ..... 4Q: Dolphins within 38-24 with 3:39 left after Reggie Bush 2-yard TD run. ..... Brady to Welker 99-yard TD pass with 5:44 left. ..... Henne to Davone Bess 7-yard apparent TD pass overturned on review and then Miami misses on 4th-down fade pattern. ..... Pats add short FG for a 14-point lead with 11:02 to play. ..... 3Q: Pats with a now safe-ish 28-17 lead in last seconds of quarter on Brady 1-yard TD flip to TE Aaron Hernandez. ..... Dolphins settle for 20-yard FG and drw within 21-17 after reaching NE 1 then stalling. That hurts. ...... Brady to Wes Welker for 2-yard TD strike and 21-14 Pats lead, mid-third. ..... Jared Odrick INT and 40-yard return off a Benny Sapp deflection sets up 10-yard Hene strike to Brian Hartline in end zone. Miami knots it 14-14 early in third. ..... Half: Chad Henne good (11-15, 137 yards). Tom Brady better (14-22, 211, 1 TD). ..... 2Q: Pats wide right on 48-yard FG try in closing seconds. ..... Wes Welker just dropped a bomb from Brady after Tom had about a month and a half to sit in the pocket. ..... TE Rob Gronkowski, 10-yard score and 14-7 Pats lead in first minute of second quarter. The word is gravity. Dolfans coming back down to Earth after elation of that opening drive. ...... 1Q: Pats driving as first quarter ends. ..... Pats answer quickly with 7-7 tie on 78-yard scoring drive finished by Benjarvus Green-Ellis 4-yard run. Big play: Tom Brady 46-yard pass to Matthew Slater over Vontae Davis. ..... Chad Henne 9-yard TD run on a QB draw finishes a brilliant 84-yard opening drive that eats half the quarter. Astonishingly, the 7-0 leads comes on Miami's first season-opening TD drive since 2000. Henne 6-for-7 for 77 yards in series, the only incompletion a drop. ..... Pregame: Dolphins win toss, will receive. ..... Very impressive pregame ceremony with Fergie on anthem, B-2 stealth bomber flyover and "U-S-A!" chant by crowd. ..... uch a weird juxtaposition. Tony Sparano marching the field during program warmups as a carnival swirls around him. Sideline populated by a swarm including Dan Marino, Hank Williams Jr., Fergie and the newly unwed Marc Anthony. Let's hope the Dolphins love winning as much as owner Stephen Ross loves celebrity. ..... Original post: The statement I have in mind is not, "Oops, we did it again." The statement I have in mind is, "Miami can be a factor in the AFC East." Or, "The home-field advantage is back." Or, "This new offense really is exciting." Or, "This is the Chad Henne we've been waiting for." If Dolfans can make at least a couple of those statements during and after tonight's opener, it will have been a good night for Miami. Y'all know by now I'm on record predicting a Dolphins upset win, 31-27. Hopefully I'm not the one whose statement is "Oops" as midnight approaches.

Inviting your comments here before, during and of course after the game. I'll be at the stadium columnizing, naturally, and be right here with a Semi-Live Boutique Blog, updating the score throughout and offering brief commentary.

I have confidence the Dolphins will give the people a good showing on National TV...

we are due for a big win at home, lets see.

they look defenseless

they don't just look defenseless, they are defenseless.. and now they are punchless.

might as well watch the Tea Party debates and see how many gaffes and lunacy Perry can add to his portolio.

mike1,

just turned on the game and it is within reach as it seems it will be 14-7 at the half.

RE CAMERON WAKE:

never a doubt here that his CFL numbers indicated a player of quality- less downs to accumulate sacks and a wider field for the offense to operate. a real tremendous bargain and one of the few guys from canada to make it in the NFL- warren moon the best, theismann next, flutie never given a shot while in his prime and produced in his old age and joe kapp had a couple of years for the vikings; did i miss anyone?

HUH????

the dolphins who practice in the humidity of south florida cramping up, while the patriots seem unaffected by the weather and very affected by the pace of the NE attack!!! i don't get it. in the meantime, #15 looks a couple of steps faster than in years before and henne looks really, reall improved- i am shocked by his good play thus far.

The fins r being out coached at every level. From the head coach down to the conditioning coach. Talent wise they can match up with new england with the exception of brady. Absolutely pathetic. Get nolan carroll off the field.

Is that Richie Cunningham playing guard for Miami wearing number #68? I guess we must have cut that stiff Incognito before the game today. If we didn't that's another huge mistake made by Sparano the pizza delivery man. The more things change the more they stay the same. The only thing that has stopped Tom Brady tonight was a few minutes ago, just before he threw another touchdown pass, he saw that two Cuban guys were trying to pick up one of the 5 Starbrites that he is planning to bang at the Clevelander after the game and he rushed to the sidelines to put a stop to it. He certainly isn't worried about anyone on the Dolphins. I'm sure that while I'm typing this he's thrown two more TDs. He better watch out for the Cuban guy, though, that guy has to ware a cage and a helmet to protect his 14 inch tongue.

Ok, that is one hell of a stupid call on 4th and a foot. I seem to remember that at the Jets game I was at least year.

I HATE the fade. If you're going to pass, do it so you have a few options of receivers.

ughhh.. and now Welker..who we traded, schools us for a 100 yd TD reception.

SISSY FOOTBALL AND THE DOLPHINS ARE DEAD!!!

can't run for 1/2 a yard, misfire on a pass, and then wes welker (oh boy, we got a second round draft pick for him, the jerks said) is gone for 99 yards!! wes welker! former dolphin who was the best player on the team and let go!! 99 yards "to the house" for a possesion receiver!! ALL BECAUSE THE FAT SLOB DOLPHINS OFFENSIVE LINE CAN"T BLOCK FOR HALF A YARD AT THE GOAL LINE!! imbelievable!!

mike1,

you, sir, were about the only one (that i can remember) on this blogsite who was "bitching and moaning" when welker was let go- and you were right. a transaction that is looking worses and worse with the passage of time.

Time for Sparono to go

Mike,

after one game?

TD REVIEW RULE COSTS THE DOLPHINS!!!

granted #15 was a half yard shy on the reception, but last year that play was a TD; would have been a tainted score, but the new rule changed the game around and exposed the dolphins' lack of confidence and lack of ability to get 1/2 a yard when it counts- SISSY FOOTBALL!!!

Yea, I knew he had thrown another one while I was typing my last post. I went back to the old TV set and watched what I had missed while I was typing up my last post and sure enough the boy throws a 99 and a 1/2 yarder for another six. Was that Wesley Walker running across the Miami swamp to score again? Didn't he used to play here? Oh yea, our brain trust decided he couldn't play. Are my eyes deceiving me or is New England playing with 53 white boys on their team? I mean they have this little white guy who must be 5 foot tall running the ball through our defense like a kid running through Chuckie Cheese on his birthday. What's Tom got 500? Those 5 Starbrites better start lubing up right now 'cause Tom hasn't even broken a sweat at Joe Robbie.

Correction, SUN LIFE STADIUM!

I'm now watching Miss Ukraine answer her question....this contest wouldn't be so bad if they'd have more judges (voters) and one's who really know..not a select few celebrities.

The worst thing about the show is they eliminate 90% of the field in the first 5 minutes. You never get to see the rest, and boy do they like to pick favorites and overlook some of the prettiest ones.

There's little basis to most (not all) of the picks, just politics. ..an oriental, an African, a European, a Eastern European, Venezuelan (because they are the biggest contributors), Brazil (home country).

Answering the question rarely hurts the favorite.

I GIVE HENNE SOME CREDIT HE IS TRYING TO GET BETTER BUT HE IS NOT THERE YET AS AN ELITE QB BUT HE IS STILL A GOOD 2ND STRING ONE ;)

DEFENSE I THINK IS WORSE THAN LAST YEAR !

OFFENSE HAVE STILL STRUGGLING ABOUT THE SAME AS LAST YEAR !

FOLKS WE NEED TO DEMAND OR PICKET IN FRONT OF MR.ROSS OFFICE FOR A REAL CHANGE :STARTING WITH A PROVEN COACH LIKE COWHER ALL NEW OFFICE PERSONNEL !

Yep, I threw a fit the day we traded Welker, and most (not all posters) on this blog assured me that he was an average player and that we got a steal getting a 2nd round pick.

But what consistently befuddles me is the fade pass. It's failed us so many times. It's low percentage. If you're going to pass from inside the 2 or 3, have a play that offers choices from several receivers including the RB out of the backing. Anyway, we should've just run. No one would fault a coach from a good run effort.

Bellichek is a great coach. All his no names produce.

My NE co-worker friend is going to harrass me as usual; especially about Welker.

nice prediction d-bag Cote! and all those passing yard statistics are worthless without a WIN. Henne is still a loser!

Whats really amazing is that its never the same thing. Every week its something else. Won 5 bucks when they went for it on 4th down because I bet they would have to take a timeout !! There is NO excuse for this, none. How do you not have a play and why do you need to change the package, the Pats were on their heels ?

anyway next week the D will play good but Henne will revert and throw the game away or Bush will fumble 3 times its never the same thing. I mean damn how are they not conditioned for tonights game WTF.

The 1986 Dolphins had a better defense.

mike1,

please advise your NE co-worker that you were screaming "bloody murder" when the dolphins gave the patriots wes welker for virtually nothing. we (you and i and a few others) have been lamenting that deal since the day it occured. gave the patriots half their offensive diversity.

We can't power run the footbsll (just like preseason). Our defense was embarrasing. No pass rush. Our secondary stunk. What happened to our cornerbacks who are suppose to be the best pair in the league (their words, not mine)? They could not even stay on the field. Our linebackers missed too many tackles. I thought our defense was our strength. Thank God it is only one game

SAME RESULTS DIFFERENT YEAR HOW LONG MR.ROSS WILL LAUGH IN OUR FACES !

FOLKS LET SEND MR.ROSS A MESSAGE BY KEEPING AN EMPTY STADIUM UNTIL HE SHOW US THE FANS R-E-S-P-E-C-T- AND HIRE COACH COWHER ;)

No good coach would ever work for Stephen Ross.

That's alright boys, it's only one game, remember, OC said we'd win 12 games. He he he. Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha 12 games! Bro, you must have fallen into a vat of beer at the Guiness brewery before you made that call. We couldn't win 12 games in the ACC. I thought the most embarrassing win New England ever had against us was the game where that fish Flutie dropped kicked the exta point but tonight I think was the worst. Opening week, Monday night, national audience, and we let Tommy Boy throw for 500! And it wasn't even that close. I swear one time I counted and he had 12 seconds to throw the ball. Freaking Bellicheck can come out against the Fish with Jacory Harris at QB at put 40 on Miami. A total wasted night in front of the TV. If that Michele broad would have promised to peel a banana with her lips in tonight's debate I might have switched the channel.

Noel,

the dolphins owner looks like alfred e. newman and espouses the philosophy of "what, me worry?" mister ross better start worrying if he cares about more than hob-knobbing with celebrities in the luxury boxes.

Come on now, Noel, didn't you see that other "great Miami owner," Marc Anthony on TV. "Marc Anthony" are you freaking kidding me! The real Marc Anthony who slipped Cleopatra the bone must be spinning in his grave, that this little gnome is trashing his name. Stephen Ross, Donna Shalala, I'm beginning to see a pattern here.

Get willie allen back...and run larry johnson.

hey retard Cote.... stop being a homer....AFC east a 2 team division....Patriots and Jets dummy.... Write like you use your brain

Congratulations to Brady. 517 yards passing! WOW! I think we should replace Marino bronze statue with a Tom Brady bronze statue!

At least I won my fantasy football weekend opener. 1-0
