Do Dolphins or Canes inspire most confidence? (with poll); plus Barry Gibb Talk Show, Shaq disses Bosh, stinkin' Jets, KOD & more

1aa1larrydavid [Fellow "Curb Your Enthusiasm" fanatics, alert! Larry David is on the cover of the new Rolling Stone (left). Click here for an LD treasure trove. Also, join us at Twitter.com/gregcote. Will it help defray the $1.2 trillion U.S. debt to China? Well, it couldn't hurt!].

Dolphins must attack free agency: This is a franchise in despair (see poll results below), stuck in a bog. The pending free agency period is a way out. Click on Plan Of Attack for my latest column, newly online and shipping to Friday's pulp editions. I discuss the state of the Dolphins and propose the two quarterbacks and two running backs Miami should be targeting.

1aa1dolph2 1aa1dolph1 ARE DOLPHINS OR HURRICANES INSPIRING THE MOST ANTICIPATION AND OPTIMISM?: I answer Hank Jr.'s question with a hell-yeah today in this column welcoming the onset of football. The ebbing NFL lockout makes it appear the Dolphins will open camp on time July 30, and the Canes hit the practice field a week later, so football appetites whet. The poll question here is not "which is your favorite team?" so try to get past that. Could have easily phrased the poll question in other ways all getting to the same point. Whose fans are more likely to leave the season satisfied? Which team is more likely to win 10 games? You get the idea. The caveat is that the Dolphins' outlook is a bit more in flux, with free agency yet to start. Let's get a pulse-reading anyway. Vote and say why.

1aa1barrygibb THE BARRY GIBB TALK SHOW: Add the recurring Saturday Night Live bit, "The Barry Gibb Talk Show," to the ever-growing list of Things I Love. Jimmy Fallon is brilliant as Miami's own Barry Gibb, with a spot-on caricature of Gibb's voice. Justin Timberlake is great as quiet brother Robin. Click here for a vid of the most recent segment of the show, from May.

RETIREE CALLS HEAT "BIG 2": Shaquille O'Neal in his debut as a Turner Sports analyst casts a volley across Chris Bosh's broadside by referring to the Heat as "the Big 2." Oh Shaq you so outspoken! Wonder if Barkley will sue for trademark infringement? Click here for the YouTube vid of Shaq speaking. [Update: Bosh evidently not real worried about criticism. Just Tweeted, "I love summer days."]

1aa1willm 1aa1rodb 1aa1alg SEPARATED AT BIRTH?: A live-chat participant today noted the resemblance between UM coach Al Golden and Gators coach Will Muschamp. I would add disgraced former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. The likeness among the three is especially uncanny if you catch each on a day when that wave of dark hair sweeps across the forehead. Los hermanos are pictured above for your consideration.

DOLPHINS AIDING AND ABETTING THE ENEMY!: Dolphins fans have alerted us to this small bit of 1aa1jetshere bizarre: Jets T-shirts being sold at the Dolphins souvenir store at Sun Life Stadium. See the evidence here. It's funny the T-shirts read, "Home of the Jets," because NYJ games in Miami sound a little like that, thanks in part, we now see, to the Dolphins themselves. Dear Dolphins: Money is good, yeah, and we all know many Jets fans live down here, but c'mon! While I am not as outraged as fans who have ignited an Internet campaign to expose this, I do see it as just the latest of the Dolphins' needless PR toe-stubs. [Update: Dolphins say they'll stop that].

J-LO SEEKS MIAMI DOLPHINS IN DIVORCE SETTLEMENT: OK not really. Just wanted to see what that looked like in a headline. Although Marc Anthony is one of the club's celebrity micro-owners, and they are divorcing, so anything is possible.

YAO MING? NO. SORRY: Some chatter this week whether newly retired NBA center Yao Ming should be seen as a Hall of Famer. McEnroe, would you come in here for a second? "YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!?! Thanks, John. No way Ming is Hall-worthy. Perennial all-star but played a mere seven full seasons. Averaged 19 points but never made the all-NBA first team. Stood 7-6 but finished top-10 in rebounds only once and never top-5 in blocks. Sorry, Yao. Hall of Pretty Damned Good for you.

1aa1swimwedding MIAMI'S FASHION WEEK: The swimwear portion of Miami's Fashion Week included the outfit pictured at left, a sort of half-swimsuit, half-wedding dress. Oh God but I wish I were kidding! I always wonder when looking at something like this who has the tougher job to not look embarrassed: the designer, or the model?

1aa1santana SANTANA WANNA PLAY BEFORE HE STARTS PLAYING: Ex-Canes receiver Santana Moss of the Redskins is planning a big par-tay Sunday at Miami's famed King Of Diamonds strip club to bid adieu to the waning summer vacation lockout prior to returning to work. Thank goodness the labor strife is ending. Players having a tough time making ends meet. In fact I heard Santana had to downgrade from Cristal to Dom on his pre-ordered cases of champagne. Tough times, they hit us all, friends.

1aa1stilleto "DEAR GREG...": "Your blog's OK but would be better if occasionally you would show a woman swimming while wearing stiletto heels. Thank you."

THE LIST: SWING, BATTER!: Most strikeouts by a Marlins batter in a single season, 150 or more:

K's   Player   Year

187   Preston Wilson   2000

171   Dan Uggla   2008

167   Dan Uggla   2007

164   Derrek Lee   2002

156   Preston Wilson   1999

150   Dan Uggla   2009

Note: Mike Stanton is on pace for club-record-tying 187 K's, with 105 (second-most in NL) through 91 games.

Click back. Will be adding a bunch more stuff to this latest blogpost...

The Atlantic Coast Conference has reached a TV rights agreement with ESPN that will pay the conference nearly $2 billion over 12 years
-- orlando sentinel

BEGINNER'S LUCK

Greg, Shaq taking a shot at Chris Bosh should be no surprise to anyone. It was only a few years ago that he referred to Bosh as "the Rupaul of big men" He obviously has little respect for Bosh.

Green,

That ACC/ESPN deal can be a blessing, or nightmare in disguise. Frankly, UM doesn't need to be showcased on national television consistently losing to conference foes, they've lost enough recruits because of this. Not only losing, but getting their asses handed to them on several occasions:

2006: ACC Record 3-5
2007: ACC Record 2-6
2008: ACC Record 4-4
2009: ACC Record 5-3
2010: ACC Record 4-4

October 9th, 2010: FSU 45, UM 17
(whooping televised on national ABC audience)

November 30th, 2010: VT: 31, UM 17
(conference game on ESPN)

December 31st, 2010: Notre Dame 33, UM 17
(domination by Notre Dame, UM scores two meaningless touchdowns in fourth quarter)

Plus several other POUNDINGS by other teams, including a 40+ point loss against Oklahoma, 30+ loss to UF, and 48 point loss steamrolling against lowly Virginia in the Orange Bowl's final game... amongst countless others.

I'm not a FIU fan, but obviously they've done quite well the last couple of seasons. Considering the sheer scope and size of the school, its inevitable that the Big East eventually invites them. Do they take the step and risk immediate mediocrity in moving to a much larger conference (Like UM did with Big East -> ACC), or do they simply move up into C-USA where they should still be competitive? Even if they move into the Big East, they probably will be in a better position to do so when they cross that bridge.

I'm not a FIU fan, but obviously they've done quite well the last couple of seasons. Considering the sheer scope and size of the school, its inevitable that the Big East eventually invites them.

That's ridiculous. So you went to UF for both undergrad AND law school, yet you're a Hurricanes fan?

Nobody will ever believe that, you delirious douche. ONCE a gator... ALWAYS A GATOR.

First off, an editor and I came up with the story idea as a way to localize a USA Today piece on the widespread use of athletic fees to prop up low-revenue programs. What the data showed was that FIU not only was part of the trend, but it the most reliant on said subsidies, even compared to similar schools.

drawing power drives expansion ...

exaggerates crowd size to appear larger & meet D-1 requirements ...
but for strong-arming an unsuspecting student body through obscene activity fees ...
their unwanted athletic program would die a lonely death ...

ORPHAN'S PARADOX

Green, time to get back on the meds buddy!

Why do you care so much about FIU anyways? If they are indeed so irrelevant to you, why bother? You don't see my going after FIU, probably because UF isn't scared of them, much less the U.

What is this FIU that stirs passions so? Presumably, it's an overlooked team with some connection to the upcoming (local) football season, but why such a fuss?

Gentlemen, please!

Forget the U, or FIU. Let's hear it for Brown Mackie College! Rah-Rah-Rah. Gooooooooo-HERALD, Goooooooooo-HERALD!!!

FIU will be have the best record next season, mark it down.

Tiger had to do it. He had to split with Steve Williams. Much like when Tiger let Michael Thomas "Fluff" Cowan go, Tiger needs a complete fresh start. Stevie needs to see that it's not personal.

It's the obvious move.

Mr. Cote, Could'nt cast my vote due to the fact I believe BOTH will disappoint me....

RE: preston wilson

you will remember that he was taken out of the line-up the last few days of 2000 so as not to be the all-time leader in strikouts for a season. funny, i was just thinking about that this morning when the subject popped up on the blogsite.

REGURGETATION:

i am not a canes fan, and will never be- but i see a parallel between ND and ara parseghian/john huarte in 1964 and al golden/jacory harris this year. as much as i have ragged on him for his horrible play, i am rooting fror him to find hisself as a senior and have a decent- no way a heisman- year. still think ray ray is the best QB the canes have.

What is this FIU that stirs passions so? Presumably, it's an overlooked team with some connection to the upcoming (local) football season, but why such a fuss?

men,

all reports concerning the dolphins rookie runer from k-state is that he is not blinding fast, maybe not as fast as marc tyler of USC, who i don't believe got drafted. someone will turn up in camp who has some zip and can carry without fumbling. quiz ro(d)gers was taken and will last a couple of years. and, john beck will QB the redskins!

fellers,

tyler not drafted cause he has a season left, but got into trouble for intimating that USC PAYS ITS PLAYERS!!! IT JUST CAN'T BE TWOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

UM has had far superior teams, having won many national championships in football and baseball. That means that there is more to write about. Far more fans, moreover, go to Hurricane games. The followers of the Hurricane blog at MiamiHerald.com outnumber those following the Golden Panthers one by about 10-1, sports editor Jorge Rojas says.

There is, in other words, much more readership demand for coverage of the Hurricanes than of the Golden Panthers.
-- miami herald ombudsman 8/1/10

UM does and should get the greater share of sports coverage
-- miami herald ombudsman 8/8/10

this isn’t The Miami Herald’s fault. Until FIU starts to matter in a big way, in a way that UM matters, there will never be that same coverage, at least not in the sports page. ...

But until your everyday FIU student or alumni begins to care in a significant way and specifically until it affects The Miami Herald’s bottom line, they’ll continue to pay that other school more attention.

WOW This blog really gets lamer by the day.....

Green... you need medication.....

Shadow,

Yes, I remember when they sat Preston....he would be the leader by miles if they wouldn't have benched him....
& yes Beck will be the QB for the redskins this year.....

Glad to see the rest of the world hasn't lost its mind thinking the Dolphins are gonna win 10 games....except for those delusional 67 votes that is...(maybe if we add last years victory total to this years we might get in double digit wins...)

Looks like pro football is back on. A vote by the player's reps in about an hour. The owners have already approved their side of it and now it's up to the players. Last issue will be whether to unionize or not, but that would not hold up getting the players back into their teams.

A cautious, yet optimistic sigh of relief. Whew...

If what I posted above holds true, that checkered ball will be kicked summarily into the back of the closet, where it belongs alongside tetherball, badminton and horseshoe.

Go Dolphins!

Hey Green, the U hasn't done anything in the last 10 years (other than bring Jackson Memorial to its knees and spawn miscreants). With the 252,000-square-foot building about 50% leased, Maryland-based developer Wexford Science & Technology has focused on bringing in retail tenants to fill out its first floor in preparation for a Sept. 20 ribbon cutting.

The University of Miami changed the face of modern health care in South Florida when it purchased Cedars Medical Center in late 2007. The 560-bed facility was renamed University of Miami Hospital and became the region’s first university-owned, multi-specialty, acute care hospital and the flagship facility of UHealth – University of Miami Health System.

U.S. News & World Report magazine is the latest true believer in the ``new'' UM, as the magazine last week (august 2010) ranked UM 47th in the nation among all national research universities -- high enough to be Florida's top-ranked school.

UM, ranked 50th last year, has never held the state's No. 1 spot before. The longtime owner of that title, the University of Florida, dropped from 47th to 53rd this year.

Green,

And most of those players are entering the later stage of their careers as they are talents from when the U actually mattered.

If you can filter athletes who have entered the league within the last five years, I'm sure you'll find more athletes from collegiate programs that currently matter. Like UF...

BREAKING NEWS!

Gators and Alachua County Detention center to merge.

It has been decided that the University of Felons and Alachua County Detention Center have decided to merge since so many Gator athletes and Presidents end up behind bars, wearing orange jump suits with numbers on the back that are too long to put on jerseys.

The facilities at the Detenton center have been upgraded as well as the training table which has run out of Baloney and Mayonnaise on numerous occasions.

Florida officials have stated that since so many Gator athletes visit the center on a continuing basis that it only seemed prudent to decide on the merger.

A new basketball facility and court has since been added making the Detention center a more attractive partner and merger target.

Also the law offices one one attorney who didn't want to be quoted for this story will be built on as an addition to the Detention Center.

Gator Jamboree will take place at the facility so parents, girlfriends and dope dealers have plenty of parking space.

The Swamp as it is affectionately known will be renamed "THE CESSPOOL," and a statue of the local Bail Bondsmen will be erected outside the stadium.

Yeah Gator athletes are becoming very good at Monopoly as well and the University is lobbying the SEC to add the game as a sport, especially since Gators get so many DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200.00 (meaning don't take that $200.00 handshake), GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL CARDS.

That about sums up the Gator Report for today!
