Click on TIME FOR JEFF IRELAND TO STEP UP, PROVE HIMSELF for my latest column, online now and shipping to Tuesday's pulp editions. It's on the end of the NFL lockout segueing into a truncated, madcap trades-and-free agency window that finds the Dolphins, and especially GM Jeff Ireland, under the gun to move both boldly and quickly. For Miami, this is an opportunity. Also, it is an obligation. Because Dolfans deserve better.

1aa1lock LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE ENDS! NFL MAKES PEACE!: This new 'Back to Football' logo (above) is bugled across the MiamiDolphins.com website. The two sides have agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement, the 132-day lockout is over, and free-agent and trade negotiations may begin today/Tuesday. Let the madness begin! Click here for a detailed pdf-document summary of the new CBA sent to agents. I'm being a bit facetious on the "long national nightmare," by the way. The NFL lockout of four-plus months affected my life not a bit and, by all indications, affected the NFL hardly at all. No games missed. Preseason scarcely impacted. Best I can tell, teams missed a few "mini-camps" and OTA (organized team activity) days. Big whoop. Plenty of players were secretly thrilled to not have those high-heat mini-camps. Now, on deck: the truncated piranha tank otherwise known as free agency. Click here for a recent column of mine on where the Dolphins should be looking. I would target QBs Kyle Orton or Vince Young, running backs Ahmad Bradshaw, DeAngelo Williams or Reggie Bush (in that order), and also consider WR Plaxico Burress and bringing back OLB Jason Taylor. What would your advice be to Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland? Let's pretend he asked. Help Ireland with his to-do list in terms of Miami's FA priority. Vote now.

1aa1devlin DOLPHINS SIGN A QUARTERBACK! (SORT OF): Dolphins today/Tuesday signed undrafted Delaware QB Pat Devlin (pictured). This is good news if he's being brought in as a longshot training-camp body. This is bad news if this is the extent of Miami's run on guys to compete with Chad Henne. Let's assume and hope it's the former, and that Dolphins still are setting sights on bigger targets like Kyle Orton or Vince Young.

DEANGELO TO MIAMI, RONNIE TO PATS?: Sports Illustrated's wise Peter King projects Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams ending up with Dolphins in his outlook for top 50 free agents in the latest SI. King also guesses projects Miami will land Atlanta guard Harvey Dahl. Also notable, he has Ronnie Brown ending up with Patriots. Oy! In the same issue, SI's Jim Trotter calls QB Vince Young a "good fit" for Miami. Here's hoping it's yes for MIA on both Williams and Young. Meantime, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Miami is interested in newly released Cowboys RB Marion Barber.

BIZARRE CIRCUMSTANCES CLAIM TORTURED LIFE OF HARRY POTTER'S BROTHER: The little-known older 1aa1alpotter brother of Harry Potter has been identified as the victim in what London police are calling the world's first known planking-related death. An apparently drunk Al Potter, 36, died while planking in a West End intersection and being run over by a Fiat driven by the grandson of original Kinks drummer Mick Avory. Planking is a fad in which participants lay face-down in an incongruous setting. Relatives of Al Potter, an orphan, are calling the death a suicide. "He couldn't take it any more," said an aunt who declined to give her name. "Everything was about Harry and it drove him mad. Al was denied admission to Hogwarts, began drinking 12, 15 Stellas a day, had 'Voldemort' tattooed across the broad of his back -- just rebelled in jealousy and went off the deep end. Sad." Al Potter, single, attempted to enter trade school but failed as a blacksmith. He later failed as a Harry Potter impersonator (pictured). Relatives say his depression had worsened recently with failed efforts to self-publish a biographical novel, "The Smithying World Of Al Potter." Funeral arrangements are pending.

1aa1backstreets GIANT-HEADED DON SHULA LEADS "BACK TO FOOTBALL" RALLY: Love the big cardboard cutouts of Brandon Marshall and Jake Long, but not nearly as much as I love the gigantic Don Shula head. This is a local Dolphins-organized Back to Football rally that appears to be populated entirely by Dolphins employees, but, maybe it was just early. At any rate, GIANT SHULA HEAD RULES!

1aa1lebronleg INKY LOVE FOR LEBRON: See, Cleveland, LeBron James is not universally hated, after all. A fan has had a likeness of LeBron's face (and a damned good one at that) tattooed on his leg. The fan posted this photo on Twitter, and LeBron Tweeted back: Oh damn! That's how u feel. I appreciate the love.

BELIEVE, OR BURN?: Some may know I'm a fan of puns and wordplay, so I rather enjoyed a church sign I saw today: "Follow the Son, And You Won't End Up Burning." However, upon further reflection, I thought it a tad harsh to consign cremation in hell to those of perhaps divergent beliefs. When did 'religious tolerance' become an oxymoron? I'm just saying.

1aa1giantshw BEARDED GIANT GETS PAST WHITE HOUSE SECURITY: Here is a photo of Barack Obama honoring the World Series champ Giants at the White House today. I am thinking it is no coincidence that closer Brian Wilson and his astoundingly creepy beard were not allowed anywhere close to the president. Also, cannot confirm that Republicans demanded equal time to profess that they love the Giants even more.

1aa1joepa GOTTA LOVE JOE PA: Pictured is a photo of Penn State octogenarian football coach Joe Paterno in his office staring through lenses thick enough to be hurricane-grade glass at a computer screen the size of a braggart's television. You go, Joe!

Thanks for the FIU coverage Greg. You've got my vote for Pulitzer.

bummed on no 18 game season

Uruguay are probably the best team in S. America right now after last year's WC and now Copa America champions, deserved 3-0 winners over Paraguay,

No without controversy. About 65th minute, Paraguayan was clearly fouled in the box..pushed from behind. No faking here. He lands on the ball, ref calls him for handball. It was 2-0 at that time, I think the better team won and would've held on..but you never know.

Green,

I recall you stating last week that UM has teh #8 recruiting class. However, according to Rivals.com, not only are they nowhere near top 25, but they are middle of the pack in ACC. In fact, even Virginia is ranked ahead in ACC, which obviously makes sense considering Virginia spanked UM 48-0 in the last Orange Bowl appearance.

Your comments? Please, enlighten us! lol

chomp chomp.....If you wanna bring up the past by talking about the last game in the Orange Bowl which happened 6 yrs ago, then by all means I can bring up the past and how your chump chumps decided they had to take us off the schedule because
......YOU JUST COULDNT BEAT US !!!

CHUMP CHUMP CHUMP.......

Let me enlighten you a little further....

You have only beaten us once in the 20 years !!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

And you didn't lose to us more often because again, your CHUMPS would rather schedule and strap-it-on against the University of Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow!!!

Notice I use strap-it-on rather than strap-it-up...because lets face it thats what Gayturds do !!!!!

The NFL is baack baby!...Now that everything is ok with the world here is what the Dolphins need to do in free agency. ( in no particular order ).

RB ( with speed )
QB - veteran like Bulger or Mcnabb
TE ( with speed )
OG
outside LB-Taylor returns ?
re-sign Tony Mcdaniels

Ps...Cane fans, pay no attention to the gator trash on this blog, bastards just want some attention.

Orange Bowl 4 Ever,

Oh yeah, we don't want to schedule you just like you don't want to schedule FIU after the took care of you scUMbags during that Orange Bowl beat down.

Either scUMbags don't want to get bitch slapped by FIU, or you don't want to lose against FIU. My guess is the latter... They're up and coming, while us Gators eat Ibis for dinner.

Al Potter?
Isn't that the Samson dude from the local pro baseball team?

Dolphins priorities lie in the following.

1. upgrade at both Safety positions. little talked about but giving up too many TE's yds, 3rd down break downs & dropped INT's.

2. quality QB competition. Bulger yes, McNabb.... a big joke. I'd rather have some undrafted FA QB come in and try then getting McNabb. IF Oakland cuts Campbell, go get 'em.

3. pass rushing LB... yeah, yeah, who Doesn't need one, they won't be cheap.

4. Crowder replacement. Excellent MLB in Dansby and a light weight big mouth next to him makes this tandem mediocre.

5. Speedy RB. Ahmed Bradshaw or DeAngelo Williams. Bush ain't worth the big $ considering he's 3rd down specialist.

6. New Head Coach? Can't blame me for trying.

Bring Jason back !!! That is for ceremonial retirement. Washed----up. Thanks for all the memories Jason!

Rumor has it that LeBron is coming here to Colorado to visit Trinidad Medical Center. Trinidad specializes in sex changes. Seems he wants to be a 2 sport celebrity and that he prefers womens tennis. I could have swore I saw mascara running down his cheeks when the Heat were blown out by Mavs!

A model for liberalism = Norway.

A country where those charged get a maximum sentence of 100 days jail time for every human being the murder. 100 days. Kill your boss or wife, and get out before the first snow hits the ground.

Mass murderer Anders Behrin Breivik, who just destroyed 76 people's lives would be set free in just 1/4 of his own lifetime.

That is some deterrent.

As a Miami Dolphins fan I wonder what is better, a lockout or no lockout. Hmm? No doubt our record would have been better WITH a lockout.

Hey chomp chomp gator douche. Talk to me when UF has 5 rings, a 58 game home winning streak, a 34 game winning streak, a 14 year 1st round draft pick streak, GOES UNDEFEATED, doesn't chicken out from scheduling decent non conference foes like UM does (Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, UCLA, FSU (pre 2004), FL (before you cancelled that), Washington, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, Louisville, etc), and puts out elite talent like Devin Hester, Ed Reed, Andre Johnson, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Michael Irvin, Jim Kellys, Clinton Portis, Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne, Frank Gore, Jeremy Shockey, Bryant McKinnie, Vince Wilfork, Jon Vilma, DJ Williams, Kellen Winslow, Bubba Franks, Santana Moss, Jon Beason, etc. Last time I checked Miami's 2-0 in bowls against Florida, has the series lead 28-26, and is 11-4 in the last 15 against FL.

Dolphin priorities.....

1) fire Tony the Clown and put him, and more importantly, Dolphin fans out of their misery.

2) cut Chad Henne and bring back David Woodley or George Wilson Jr.

3) pray........a lot!

Alex in Boca,

Still holding on to the past, eh? LOL Whatever helps you sleep better at night buddy.

CHOMP CHOMP

Golden certainly has his hands full this season. But his priorities are spot on. Eliminating that swagger attitude until Miami actually has a winning record again is about the best thing since sliced bread. Clinging on to past championships and the glory days of yesterday does absolutely nothing for the team or its fair-weathered fan base.

As for Cote winning the pulitzer prize, good luck with that one. At least TY has a chance at making it to the NFL. Cote, you're stuck at the Herald for the foreseeable future.

chrisfiu,

or until the herald puts him on "permanent furlough...."

Chump, chump,
I would think you would love to live in the past...one win in the last 20?? haha
Btw, national championship called..you are two behind with no hope in the future of winning one. Eat our orange and green dust while pinning your title hopes on Brantley and a defensive minded coach. Go back to your trailer and bang your step sister while watching re-runs of the dukes of hazzard. While you are at it, just yank that last tooth out of your meth mouth.

And you chrissyFI-WHO....

Congrats on TY, your FIRST player with real first round potential- ATTA GIRL!! UM is going on about 50 or so, but hey you gotta walk before you run kid.

Chrissy F-I-WHO,
And here is to the grand future of your football program and its SECOND bowl win in the future and it's NEVER chance of winning a title! Future is looking great!!!:)

vann,

Have you spotted me pounding my chest on the past? Have you seen me pounding my chest about our upcoming season, or making unrealistic national champion statements? No you haven't, because I know we currently aren't in position to win the SEC and national championship.

However, if you want some forward thinking, FSU will rule ACC and Bama/Auburn will likely rule SEC this year. Regardless of this, UF will finish with a better record than UM and will play in a bowl game that matters.

I wouldn't talk so much smack about Miami's much bigger university either. I remember Nick Saban warning his entire Bama squad how dangerous FIU is, and not to underestimate them despite them being in a much smaller conference and relative irrelevance. FIU was beating Bama in the fourth quarter until Bama finally took over. This was the year Bama won the national championship. And although we (UF) crushed them when they came up to play us a couple years ago, Coach afterwards said they would win their conference, win a bowl game, and be placed in a larger conference within five years. This was two years ago, and so far they are 2 of 3. FIU today was USF and UCF ten years ago. Fortunately for us, they are in central florida and won't overtake UF or FSU despite their phenomenal growth.

Guess what? If USF or UCF were to be in Miami, UM wouldn't matter anymore. FIU is that monster, just wait a few more years and before you know it, they'll be more relevant in south florida than miami will ever again be. UM had a great run, no doubt about it, but save those memories because its over.

Chompy,
That was one heck of a dissertation. I think I hit a sore spot. I respect your right to your opinion, however you are obviously a bit out of line on USF, UCF being more relevant than UM. Seriously?? You know better, Miami is a BRAND. A nationally recognized brand. No matter how much you hate the team at least recognize the facts. The memory comment is cute, but you and I both know that Miami will take down more titles sooner than later. Why? Tradition in excellence always repeats itself. You know it, I know it- heck, even chrisFIU knows it. It's fun busting chops with you.

Chompster,
As far as records for the upcoming year, I really don't know which team will have the better record. I am not one to predict because it doesn't really have any bearing on the outcomes. I watch my team and hope to see great things just like you do.
Btw, I wouldn't jump on that FSU bandwagon so quickly..Manuel looks erratic, a bit Chris Rix like. You know the qb FSU had when we beat them 5 years in a row.

vann,

if usf and/or ucf were in miami, the UM brand would be the match weaker. hundreds of brands have disappeared despite their legendary history. I don't think UM will disappear, just the relevance of their football program. It is a university after all, and a good one at that.

*that much...

head is somewhere else.

Hey chump chump,

BTW How did your baseball team fell getting GameCOCKED!!!!!

Kyle Orton? Are you serious? He's a guarantee to mediocrity. You're better off going 2-14 and drafting a QB then having Orton string you along to 6 or 7 wins.

The fact remains that brands are most effective when visible. Miami may be visible right now, but for all the wrong reasons. The few headlines as of late are with regards to Miami being shunned by reporters in favor of FSU at ACC media day.

The biggest challenge remains the entitlement issue. Eliminate the false sense of entitlement that fills the air in Coral Gables and maybe then you'll have a team hungry for success. The talent is there, but the energy and passion are lacking. Getting blown out by Florida State and losing marginally to USF is an embarrassment to a program that claims national prominence.

So, to Chomp's point, Miami would certainly have its hands full if teams like USF and UCF were in the same market. These teams, along with FIU, are up-and-coming and are making headlines for the right reasons. Whereas UM continues to bask in its past glory, teams like FIU, USF and UCF are building on recent success.

I don't expect a fan like Vann to come to terms with reality though. I suspect he's still licking his wounds from that 26-3 loss to Florida a few years back. I think all Florida teams are starting to embrace the competition that is undoubtedly brewing within the state. It's time for the fans to do the same.

Tom, personally I love Norway. Spent some time there. Norway & Canada always alternate between best places to live in a variety of major indices & polls.

21 years seems ridiculous for this particular situation. What I think is odd though,is that Europe is highly secular yet they eliminated capital punishment ..while the US is very Christian and we have it. Makes no sense if you follow at all what the principles of the religion are.

I don't think the death penalty is much of a deterrent. So few actually get it...we'd rather err on not sentencing someone to death who may be innocent or not right in his mind through know fault of his own.

There is a lot of inequity in the system. Someone who killed one person may get death; while someone else only gets 25 yrs - life.

Norway doesn't typically need a deterrent as their crime rate is extremely low. This guy would do what he did regardless of the punishment. It was a terrorist act, not a murder in the standars sense.

I am surprised when you said that you can only get a max of 100 days ..I need to look that up.

Tom ..

"Prosecutors will consider whether Breivik's acts fall under a 2008 law on crimes against humanity, said Staale Eskeland, professor of criminal law at Oslo University.

"To kill a group of civilians systematically is the basic criteria" for charges of crimes against humanity, he said, adding that the maximum penalty for this offence was 30 years in jail, rather than 21 years under the anti-terrorism law.

In both cases the sentence can be extended for up to five years at a time if there is risk of repeat offences "

Great post ChrisFIU. Your team is doing great things. Honestly, a few years from now, I'd be more worried about playing FIU when you're in C-USA or Big East than playing UM.

The Chompster,

"if usf and/or ucf were in miami, the UM brand would be the match weaker."

Well argued sir! We should be thankful that Notre Dame is (for now) a great many miles away.

And many miles ahead too...

God bless Notre Dame.

Chomp, I'll enlighten you. First, rivals havn't updated the recruiting yet, but we are 6th on espn for 2012. I think you were looking at the recruiting for 2011, lol. Second, FIU was beating Alabama at halftime 13-10, only to squander the lead in the third quarter, not fourth. Third, you are also living in the past, infact as the seconds are ticking by, we are slowly moving into the future. Fourth, I'll bet you most students who go to FIU are Canes fans as well as FIU fans, who says one has to fail for the other to succeed? Dude, you beat a team of freshman 26-3 and as a matter of fact kicked a field goal in the late minutes of the fourth quarter. No wonder NOBODY like the classless gators. Please..REPSECT US fool, you have a classless program, and dwell in a country-one-horse town. We will win two or three more NC's before you get your next one, but I'm just dwelling on the past. How you like those facts..

There's no doubting it we, the Dolphins, are the worst franchize in the NFL. We stink. The last time that we were relevant was the season that we lost the Super Bowl to the Niners. Since then it's been a series of mediocre seasons under Marino and Shula's last years. Then it really started to go into the dumps. Jimmy led to Dave, who led to the bum of the week club. One stiff of a coach after another with Dave being the head stiff. Players, we have had a series of jokes at QB since Marino and the rest of the roster has only produced players that shinned after they left here, like Welker. Decisions, even when we have a chance for success to fall on our laps we blow it. Drew Breeze? Nah, we're going with this other stiff who played all of two games for the fish. We've brought in Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcels, and what have we gotten? Nothing! Now we have this clown as an owner who keeps emabarrassing himself as he sells little pieces of paper with Flipper's picture to so called "celebrities" like if anyone gave a rip about anything other than winning football games. Nope, it doesn't look good. For a while we looked as good as anyone else in the league, then they announced the lifting of the lockout and the clock struck 12:00. Not good boys, not good.

i think the dolphins should take a chance on vince young he has more upside that kyle orton and he is 30-17 as a starting quarterback but knowing the dolphins they well play it say and go after orton and they should also cut loose on channing crouder how many games last year it which he had no tackes not for the $5 mil per years no way also at running back go afer all of them any of them are a better option that 3 years per carry ronny brown

Good post, Woodcock. That was spot on.

btw, Woodcock. Did you happen to notice that the Dolphins just signed an undrafted QB by the name of Devlin!? :)

Spare me the dramatics Mr. Cockmeatsandwich. The Dolphins aren't the worst franchise you clown. The NFL is the toughest league bar none. Dolphins have won playoff games since 84, division titles, and have featured some marquee players like Taylor, Williams, Marino, Thomas, Madison, Long, Marshall, Surtain, Marion, etc. Yes, we have had some drafting blunders/free agent mistakes..some pretty bad. But we're not the worst franchise lay off the hash.

Cotey Cote better get the Phins on the same bandwagon he was pushing the Marlins towards a couple blogs ago if Vince Young is coming to town...just sayin...

Alex, in mouth of the mouse. Woody may be going overboard by saying the Dolphins are the worse franchise in the NFL, that distinction is best served to the likes of Detroit. However, the dude is correct with his - we suck - observation. Let's face it, the only thing worse than our Dolphins' performance through these past 30 years is our president's performance over the last two years!

How ya like me now?

Woodcock's post says it all. Our team sucks beyond all imagination. You almost have to believe it was Dolphin management intention that we be the worst franchise in the NFL. No one can really be this stupid, can they? Jeff? Tony the Clown? Stephen?

G.W. Bush... we like you even less than before.

Thanks for killing the surplus that Clinton left you with, we're now paying the price of your multiple agendas.

I wouldn't say worst.

I assume the spelling of franchise (franchize) and Drew Brees (Breeze) was intentional? Along with shined (shinned..probably a typo).

It's not worth spending a lot of time analyzing anymore. Let's just watch and see.

mike1,

uruguay has been better than argentina for a few years and just short of a very young brazil. i saw robinho miss the wide open goal after a delightful pass from neymar, who really needs to mature on the field. who aare you taking right now- mexico or uruguay; i'll take el tri

mike1,

i think my subscription to SI has expired and the it stopped with the "heart and heartbreak" cover. it was a tremendous effort to get the heel on the ball and demoralize the gringas the way that brazil lost it when the gringas tied them at the last moment.

Mike, I can't spell worth a darn. But you don't have to be able to spell Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious to conclude that the Dolphins suck.

VY is FREE to sign with Miami and Miami better grab him, it doesn't get any beter. Orton is too expensive plus draft picks.
