Let's move on from Jacory and racist Tweeter; plus why Sparano wears sunglasses, Dolphins-Jets Countdown Clock, NYJ-DUI bust & more

1aatonys WHY TONY SPARANO WEARS SUNGLASSES IN A DAY-LIT DOME: I would address this blog item to CBS' Dan Dierdorf and Greg Gumbel, who had their fun Sunday with Dolphins coach Tony Sparano wearing sunglasses inside the Vikings' dome. I would address this to NFL Network's Deion Sanders, Rich Eisen and Steve Mariucci, who similarly kidded at Sparano's expense that night. And I would address this as a preemptive strike to any Jets writers who might find themselves desperate for material this week and looking to make fun of Sparano going all movie star with the shades look. Dear Media Colleagues: Sparano, while working in a Connecticut restaurant as a teen, lost his sight for nearly a month after hot grease from a deep-fryer accidentally splashed in his eyes. To this day his eyes water excessively and are extremely sensitive to light. That is why he often wears sunglasses when others might not. It is why lights are rarely on in his office. The look happens to fit rather nicely with South Beach chic, come to think of it. And makes for easy jokes. But the look also reminds that Sparano seeing at all might be what some would even consider a miracle.

[Dolphins-Jets ticket update: Sunday's game is one of two Dolphin home games (Steelers) already sold out. A mole at StubHub said MIA-NYJ is the third-hottest game at their site, with tickets -- they have about 1,900 available -- going for an average of $137 and as much as $700. Florida buyers outnumber NY/NJ buyers by a 3-1 ratio so far].

1aabraylon3 ON JACORY HARRIS AND THE RACIST TWEET: Let me say I think my own newspaper and other media made much too much of Miami Hurricanes quarterback Jacory Harris (right) receiving a hateful Twitter message claiming fans don't want a black quarterback. I hate that one anonymous, pissant hater in effect makes national news -- it was on ESPN.com's homepage -- by spitting his vile bile. I hate that a cretin hiding in shadows gets to feel that kind of power. But I also understand it became news because Harris volunteered the information. I refuse to sit here -- as a white journalist -- and admonish Jacory for being too sensitive. He feels what he feels. But I will say he must make sure that what he feels channels not into self-doubt, but into fuel. Four picks at Ohio State and one idiotic Tweet should, in that order, combine to make Jacory Harris one highly motivated young man Thursday night at Pitt. [Update: Many of you know by now that the racist Tweeter has been ID'd as Douglas Diaz, aka motown305. Let's let this drop, OK? I don't know that he deserves anything more than his public shame. He has embarrassed his name. Now let's move on].

FANTASY UPDATE: WOE (AND ZERO) IS ME: Tough, dispiriting losses this week left both my teams 0-2. My Bad Newz Fennelz fell 126-120 despite LeSean McCoy's 35. Needed a bigger Monday night from Brees/Colston, or a better Sunday from the Ravens' D. My other league's Greg's Lobos lost 112-100. Got steamrolled on MNF by Frank Gore. Gored!

1aabraylon 1aabraylon2 JET BRAYLON EDWARDS ARRESTED: Jet Week in South Florida blasts off with NYJ receiver Braylon Edwards (left) busted in New York early this week on DUI charges after blowing a .16, twice the legal max. Cops stopped him because his Range Rover's windows were overly tinted. Pictured right: A typical Dolfan reacts to the arrest news. [Update: Edwards will play Sunday but not start, a rather gutless slap on the wrist by Rex Ryan].

1aalskinner LEONARD SKINNER, R.I.P.: Leonard Skinner, a Jacksonville teacher who inspired a Southern rock band to call itself Lynyrd Skynyrd, died today in upstate Florida at age 77. Favorite Skynyrd song of the non-hits: "Down South Jukin'."

1aapubic OOPS!: The billboard at left, extolling the South Bend, Ind. public school system, got past four proofreaders, none of whom noticed the missing L in public.

thats the dude that made the comment to jacory

what a miracle the dolphins won in Minneapolis!

GO ICE GO. REMEMBER, THE BEST WAY TO MAKE THE FOOLISH LOOK FOOLISH IS TO PERFORM. PSALMS 40

Over-flow from the last page - people need to stop bringing up the '85 Bears and '00 Ravens because those are the two best defenses of all time, that's not a "formula" to repeat.

However you don't need a high powered passing game to win in "today's NFL" - there was a long run of high powered offenses winning Super Bowls in the 90s (49ers, Favre and Elway, Rams) and then Baltimore won in 2000.

Since then the Patriots, Buccaneers, Steelers, Colts, Giants, and Saints have won - and of those you'd have to say that the Buccaneers, Steelers, and Giants were ball control offenses and the Patriots, Colts, and Saints were high powered offenses.

But all of those teams had something that the Dolphins do not - and I don't think I even have to point out what that is.

More teams than you'd think have won the Super Bowl with great defense and run-first offense (Steelers x2, Giants, Buccaneers, and Bill Parcells' Giants

Simple Confirmation....Dan Dierdorf is a freakin idiot and should not be allowed to have that mic in his hands.

Note to Jacory, welcome to the limelight...ignore the psychos....they will always be there from this day forward. That said, I bet it was some Gaytor fan trying to start crap.

OMG this is funny. The Ohio University mascot attacked the Ohio State mascot before the game Saturday. To bad Sebastian didn't do that last week. At least the Canes would have won something.

I'm so sick of hearing about this ONE RACIST DIRTBAG! This should never have received the media attention that it has...does anyone have any idea what TWITTER IS ABOUT? Anyone can go onto anyone's account and say all kinds of crap, and there are all kinds of ignorant people out there!
Also, Jacory should NOT BE putting things up on Twitter to get people motivated against him (two hours before the Ohio State game) - he put up the message: "Middle fingers up, it's time to play some football" - WHY THE MIDDLE FINGERS UP? That's PUNK TALK, and he should know better...so, when someone comes on and says something negative, even though it's totally racist, Jacory needs to just let it go! Again, there are ignorant people EVERYWHERE! And, again, Jacory doesn't need to be posting "middle fingers to everyone" things on Twitter, either!

GO CANESS!
Let's concentrate on winning the rest of our games...not on ONE PARASITE, RACIST DIRTBAG!!

UMike - he said "middle fingers everywhere, this is why you play college football".

As in their bus is pulling into the stadium, it's a sick atmosphere, and they're getting flicked off by thousands of rabid Ohio State fans.

"I hate that some pissant made the news, so I will write even more about it and bitch that the media made too much out of it, while I keep on writing about it" Greg Cote.
Get a clue Cotex, you idiot.

Here's how the Dolphins get to 10-6 and into the playoffs or as division champs:

1. Bills - W
2. Vikings - W

Go 4-4 through the heart of the season:
3. Jets
4. Pats
5. @ GB
6. Pitt
7. @ Cinci
8. @ Ravens
9. Tenn
10 Bears
Wow! that's going to be tough!!!

Finish 4-2 through the easiest part of the season:
11. @ Raiders
12. Browns
13. @ Jets
14. Bills
15. Lions
16. @ Pats

Pretty funny, Tom. Looks like something I would do.

UMike - he said "middle fingers everywhere, this is why you play college football".

As in their bus is pulling into the stadium, it's a sick atmosphere, and they're getting flicked off by thousands of rabid Ohio State fans.

typical

I am Kazaam, Thanks for clearing that up. I had no clue what Jacory was referring to in that tweat quote.

ANALOGY:

the new orleans saints, with reggie bush as their fourth or fifth offensive weapon- drew brees, pierre thomas, marques colston, and maybe one more ahead of #25- are like a guy who walks around with a $100 bill buried in his wallet aside from the other bills which are used and which is saved for that proverbial "rainy day"; if reggie bush is out for any length of time, the saints offense will sputter!! as a decoy he takes 2-3 defenders with him, one-on-one he is unguardable by any LB of whom i know currently in the NFL. last night he scored a TD receiving and had a 43 yard punt to set up another score. reggie bush was a fabulous player in college, and one that requires real attention from defenses now in the pros. hoping his injury is minor and that he is ready for the saints' next game.

Except that you can buy everything with a $100 bill that you can with 5 $20s.

Reggie Bush cannot be a featured every down back in the NFL.

S*** I don't care if he wears those glasses because he's a level 3 peeper so long as the Dolphins keep winng. At least he doesn't wear a firemen's hat or whack off to himself in the mirror like Mark "Dirty" Sanchez.

"winning"

Speak of the devil - Reggie Bush has a fractured fibula, looks like the Saints are gonna be walking around with chump change for 4-6 weeks.

Somehow I think they'll survive...

Can't deny the kid is nice though:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUV4YKbiVxQ

Cote, how funny that you admonish Diedorf and Gumbel for the crack on Sparano's sunglasses and yet you did the same in one of your Opinion articles on 8/28 of this year!

"I'm not sure why Sparano wore sunglasses much of the game. Given it was night, I imagine he thought the shades might blunt the glare of a glaringly ineffective offense."

http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/08/28/1796113/dont-write-henne-off-too-quickly.html

How did a sports writer for the Miami Herald not hear about this story when it was all over the news cycle the first year Sparano was coaching?

I thought Cote was responding to something he heard on TV - I can't believe he didn't know about Sparano's situation until now!

What an idiot.

Jacory Harris is such a clown. This dude spends way too much time on Twitter (stupidest thing in the world to begin with) and taking retarded pictures. I have an idea bro. Why don't you stop whining, hit the gym, and watch film. Geez. All UM does now is TALK. I am a Miami fan...but seriously, all I here are mouths yapping and NO PRODUCTION. These guys wanna talk about "swagger"...THEY HAVEN'T EVEN WON A BOWL GAME. All they do is live off of what the legends have done. We have a long way to go before we win number 6. And enough of these delusional comparisons already. J12 IS NOT Dorsey. Aldarius IS NOT Andre Johnson. Chase Ford IS NOT Shockey. VT IS NOT Ed Reed. Ray Ray IS NOT Sean Taylor (he can wear #26 all he wants he'll never be ST). Marcus Forston (WAY OVERHYPED) IS NOT baby Sapp. Sean Spence IS NOT Jonathan Vilma. Colin McCarthy (Always out of position despite being a fifth yr senior) IS NOT Dan Morgan. Canes need to get their filth cleaned up and stop underachieving. Period. Go Dolphins, Heat, and Marlins.

How 'bout those great efforts by the Golden Panthers. #2 defense in the country after the Rutgers game and 28.5 point dogs to Texas A&M only to lead 20-6 in the 4th quarter.

This team is on the edge of breaking out.

Hahahaha - FIU fans are too funny!

Middle Tennessee doesn't stand a chance against you titans of the sun belt!

The media always trying to find ways of bring out the racist in everyone. Even I sound that way while I argue in here back and forth with myself.

Kazaam,

A) i'll take one reggie bush over five patrick cobbs

B) in writing i described reggie bush as the 4th or 5th option and specifically mentioned pierre thomas- the saints' "workhorse" back

C) better a bone than muscle injury

D) we'll see how the saints do without the most explosive player in football

E) reggie bush is a pretty nice fellow; he ain't no "primetime" or TO.

F) the saints do have some decent "chump change"- hey, $100 is chump change (i guess you mean pierre thomas) to a lot of people these days, but a week's worth of groceries to a lot of us.

G) Kazaam, always enjoy the repartee that emanates from your brain and onto the keyboard and my screen. be well

shadow-
Old No. 5 is not having the best of times these days. They remove his number next to Leinart's in the Coliseum, he loses his Heisman trophy, breaks his leg AND Kim Kardashian dumps him. That's too much for one man to handle.

OC...can you believe the middle of that schedule?
Steelers made a mockery of the Titans...Johnson had 36 yards TOTAL.

Still, if our D can play anywhere as good as they have...pressure on the opposition QB #1, we can hang in with anyone.
Notice how Jason Allen is a star these days. Gotta give some credit to the D-line and LB's. ALOT of credit.

10-6 could work this year. If we were in the NFC West, AFC West or NFC Central we'd be a lock.

Can't wait to see the 'stache rubbing his hands furiously through his rapidly graying hair Thursday night during the UM beat-down of Pitt. (hopefully)
Go Fins and Canes.

ESPN's weekly Power Ranking is just out. They have the Dolphins in at #7 up from #15, with the Jets ahead at #6.

This is going to be war!

Kazaam, no you don't need a high powered offense to win the SB, if you have a high powered defense. But you at least need an effective enough offense. And it sure would be a whole lot less stressful to have a high powered offense.

Right now the offense is horrible. And I'm not yet sold on the defense, given that we played the Bills and Favre. I mean, they obviously are pretty good..but how good still needs to be proved. Regardless, you can't count on the defense to save the game every time.

OC, I didn't realize how tough that schedule was in the middle. Our toughest schedule should've been last year. I agree, going 4-4 will be a quite a challenge in the middle of the season. There is no guarantee we win the ones that we should win either. Fortunately, we won one that we shouldn't have.

One thing is for sure though..whether we turn out to be any good, we're not going to the Super Bowl and certainly not winning it, this year.

It's killer, isn't it, Mike1.

MAWriterRobJ-
Reports are that Nolan simplified the defense in various areas. I too am glad to see another former first rounder (Jason Allen) start for this team. I'm guessing that those changes had something to do with our newly found secondary success.

I am Kazaam: I was mislead then...what I read gave the impression that it was just the opposite...in other words, the article made it sound like Jacory had initiated it (like he was telling everyone to f**k off)...my bad then!
Wow, that puts a whole new light on what I THOUGHT TOOK PLACE...where did you get this information from....just curious...?
Actually, I'm pretty sure that what I read made it practically crystal clear that it was J-12 who was "middle-fingering" others...again, if I'm wrong, then it's my bad and I take back what I said.
GO CANES!!

Twits who tweet get stupid tweets back.
Maybe Jacory should check the play book instead of worrying about tweeting his many fans...

I only tweet Chris Mathews now. It's love, baby.

And Cote, funny how sensitive you got when Dierdorf makes a dumb comment...hold up a mirror some time.

OC Dolphin,

A) having his number removed from next to matt leinart's- his pro # 25 will be around a lot longer tha leinart's #11 or whatever he is wearing after the cardina;ls let go of himand his popgun arm

B) giving back the heisman trophy is not gonna change the fact that he. like the others, will be remembered as a "former heisman winner", although i object to using the term former for those who have won the award but are not the most current recipient

C) as stated in my diatribe to my friend Kazaam, better a slight bone injury than muscle or cartilage damage

D) regarding breaking up with kim khardasian, there are three more sisters who look just like her after they have all been modified for "the NASCAR circuit", but i don't believe that #5 is gonna chase after lamar odom's wife; marcus allen tapped the unbeheaded nicole simpson, which is why al davis put him in the deep freeze for the raiders that prolonged marcus allen's career. and i agree with the writer who had marcus allen at #1 over #32 the murderer as greatest trojan of all-time. marcus allen could do anything and everything on a football field.

UMike - I don't have a source for that per se, I was at the game and saw the bus pull up and get swarmed, and then afterwards I read Randy Shannon said he wasn't happy that he had players "tweeting" on the bus-ride in. The quote is as I copied above, no other way to interpret that really.

Shadow - don't get me wrong, I love the way the Saints handled Reggie Bush. They found out year one that he couldn't be an every down back and maintain his explosiveness, so they found a role where he could excel.

If only the Bears had done the same with Devin Hester and not tried to make him an every down wide receiver.

I had the idea last year that if they could teach Hester to pooch punt 20 yards or so, they could have him be their punter whenever they got into situations where they were punting from their own 40 yard line or closer.

All that open field and blockers in front of him, he could test the sides, see what's there, and pooch it away if need be.

Phins have 29 points. 7 directly by the defense, 2 points from an intentional Bills safety. 20 offensive points. 31 first downs, 19 vs Buffalo.
Ignoring that the defense scored the points:

Miami is ahead of only Baltimore (20) Cleveland (28)and Buffalo (17) in the AFC. Dallas (27) Minnesota (19), SF (28), St Louis (27) are lower in the NFC. Minnesota's defense earned 7 of those on the Ricky fumble. I don't know how the other teams points were achieved for comparison. Don't feel like looking them up.

Phins Defense is tied at #1 with Pittsburgh at 20 for first in the NFL. I give the tiebreaker to Pittsburgh having played Atlanta and Tennessee.

#27 in yardage.
28th passing.
7th rushing.
23rd (tie) first downs.
5th (tie) on 3rd down.
32nd, dead last, kickoff returns.
29th punt returns.

Hmm... Ginn may have run out of bounds a lot, but he did have the occasional chance at a good run back certainly better than this.

Defense:
5th - total
6th - passing
11th (tie) - rushing
8th (tie) opponent first downs
4th (tie) -- sacks, 6
7th (tie) INT's, 3
22 (tie) fumbles, 1

Henne is 25th

That whacky Braylon Edwards what a card! Maybe he'll come to the game against Fins on a speedball and go totally f***ing bonkers!!!!

duke:
Why do you suppose mr. ted ginn jr. wasn't on the field for his new team last night?

another cwazy wascal picked by Miami.

My goddamn neck is so freakin sore from luggin' around this Easter Island noggin' of mine! Anyone got any Ben Gay & some f***ing Ibuprofen in this hellhole of a newsroom. F***!

haven't been this excited in our dolphins in a long time. after watching the jet/patriots game, i think there is a good chance we could be 4-0 going into the bye. we can get to sanchez, and the pats do not look like the team that has dominated the last few years, AND we alwys play them tough. i'll put our front 7 against anyone right now.
shadow, as a hurricane fan for life, it's tough to say it, but i agree with desmond howard when he said reggie bush was the best player in college football that year and should NOT have to give the award back.
as a resident of los angeles, i remember that season well, and i saw bush do things that year which were incomprehensible. he was a beast..

david in los angeles,

onr csn dtill be a good "hurricane for life" and attest to the fact that reggie bush was the best college football player of the decade- in your words: "incomprehensible" and "a beast",but a nice guy beast. a chag sameah and succot thursday night means no pitt/miami for me; an absolute must win for the canes and their besieged #12.

gut yontif shadow - too bad about the game, Randy Shannon is going to slap that crooked-ass mustache straight.

Kazaam,

thanks for the succot blessing- i am sorry that i won't be able to watch pitt/UM but if the canes can't handle pittsburgh, big trouble looms. wish your sister a gut yontif- how is she doing as a MOT?

I'm baaaaaaaack. And just in time for your beat down by my J E T S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

Ok. you guys just finished playing a Jr. High team and a team with a QB with a social security card. Enjoy it while it lasts because this Sunday night it's J E T S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

Don't know why there is all the FIU bashing. I'm not a fan of FSU, UF, FIU, UCF, USF..but I always go for the Florida teams. I would've loved to have seen FIU beat Texas A&M. The only time the trash talk is fun is when U. Miami plays one of those teams.

ESPN has Dolphins up to 7th in power rankings, up from 15th. However, I think these rankings need to be split into two parts -- offense and defense. ..because there is no way we're 7th 'in power' on offense.

mike1 - it's because we UM fans can't be the bigger men. We know that UM's never going to play FIU again and it'll be another 20 years at least before FIU joins a real conference and becomes relevant, but all FIU fans have to cheer for right now is the decline of UM, and it gets old.

Those rankings are fantastic - I hope Sparano printed them out and posted them up on his refrigerator!

Shadow - my sister's doing really well with it, she's working with a really cool rabbi who's been a friend of her husband's family for 20 years - not as chosen as she could be but she's getting there!

Sports Illustrated has the Dolphins at #6 over the Jets at #7. Citing the Dolphins as being the only undefeated road team, thus far.

Any interest in asking Singletary to lend us Ginn for just Sunday's game?

"dan dierdorf: sufferin succotash itss dan deirdorffthsss fat azz that we should be makin fun of here people"

Now that is some funny sh*t right there!!!!!!!

BWAAAHAHAHAHAHA

Cual es la diferencia de los Dolphins y un muerto?

J E T S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

Is Jacory Harris a bad quarterback because he's black, or is he black because he is a bad quarterback?

He's a bad quarterback because he's cocky and he tries to do too much, but he's working on it.

On the upcoming Pittsburgh game, he said,

`I'm going to leave it in the hands of Leonard Hankerson for the receivers, Tyler Horn for the offensive line and Damien Berry for the running backs,'' Harris said, `and let everybody take control of their position. I'll just be a leader by taking care of my business and making sure that I'm focused on what I'm doing and on leading the team the right way.''

It is ridiculous that everyone gives so much attention to one stupid comment one twitter poster made.

Get some focus Jacory on football Jacory.

Cunty, Cunty , Cunty how did a yeast infected vertical smile like yourself end up in a place like this...

Is Randy Shannon a bad head coach because he's black, or is he black because he is a bad head coach?

Inspired words from a hungry, hungry man.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbCEOD0xbmM

Appreciate the info on Coach Sparano and his eyes. I knew there was a medical reason for the sunglasses but did not know the cause. Again, being confident they were not being worn for fashion/vanity, I was rather upset at the CBS crew for poking fun at his glasses.

Harris and Shannon aren't the answer
