Sinking Marlins disheveled, desperate: The Marlins are an absymal 8-24 since their 11-1 start after consecutive embarrassing home losses to the Tampa Bay Rays. And now opening-day starter Ricky Nolasco -- who has personally ruined my fantasy team's season, thank you -- is demoted to the minors. What a train wreck. I feel for Fredi Gonzalez, but much more of this and I'll begin to think he may not survive the season. Much more of this and it will be time to scrap the season, trade Dan Uggla and get back to the damned drawing board.
The reign of King James: Did you see LeBron James' miracle Game 2 buzzer-beater? Somewhere in Akron, Coach Bro was hollerin' in his chair. Pictured left: Has the NBA given birth to its greatest player ever? I Twittered right after the game that King James has a chance to be the first player since Michael Jordan to have a career that out-Jordans Jordan. Kobe Bryant is falling just short. Does LBJ have a shot? (Realistically, I wouldn't bet on it. Too many championships are required. But otherwise he has a chance, yes).
Welcome back, Dan: 790 the Ticket radio host Dan Le Batard dips back into sportswriting Sunday, ending a year's sabbatical from The Herald. Dan returns with what a poignant, sympathetic piece on former Yankee-turned-accused-DUI-manslaughter driver Jim Leyritz. My newspaper has missed Dan. I presume readers have, too? Take a dip in our poll and drop Dan a comment letting him know how you feel about his return.
Canes get spanked: Sorry, Jim Morris, but your Miami Hurricanes -- a mediocre-for-UM 36-20 after a disappointing ACC tournament showing -- do not deserve to host an NCAA baseball regional.
Click back. May be updating/adding more stuff to this post through the weekend.

Dan who? He looks familiar. Is he a sports fan?
Posted by: r. duke | May 23, 2009 at 11:08 AM
Actually since times are tough... Yes Mr.LeBartard has been terribly missed.
Posted by: r. duke | May 23, 2009 at 11:09 AM
He is severely missed. He writes and discusses controversial topics brilliantly. I love his radio show and love the opinion pieces he writes on topics such as Jim Leyritz. Great writer and great sense of humor.
Posted by: Jorge | May 23, 2009 at 11:13 AM
Plus he gives his entire paycheck to the poor and lives only off of his Herald co-workers tablescraps. Dan is the Man!
Posted by: r. duke | May 23, 2009 at 11:27 AM
Hmmm my comments are failing to make it under the wire once again....
Posted by: r. duke | May 23, 2009 at 11:32 AM
yes as I was saying Dan also gives his entire paycheck to the poor and lives off only his Hearald co-workers tablescraps. Cote occasionally gives his some of his chips and a pickle heh, heh under the table.
Posted by: r. duke | May 23, 2009 at 11:35 AM
Ok who is f***ing with my posts. They are there and then they're not and then they are. Are you people with the KGB? And yes I know it sounds like a personal problem...
Posted by: r. duke | May 23, 2009 at 11:37 AM
gives "him" not 'his' some of his chips etc
Posted by: raoul duke | May 23, 2009 at 11:43 AM
UM barely deserves to participate in a regional, much less host one. Absolutely awful display by them this year. Worst team since the Brad Kelly year. I know they're young, but there's no excuse for this garbage.
As for the Marlins, just pack them up and ship them off to San Antonio or Portland. I cannot believe we're building a stadium for these bums. Beyond atrocious.
Posted by: Fire Everbody | May 23, 2009 at 12:01 PM
Greg, you mention you being afraid that if this continues with the Marlins that you feel Fredi will not survive the season. The thing is, he should not have been our manager in the first place he should have been gone a very long time ago before the season started, our early success and the success this team has had during his time here has little to nothing to do with him but our bad times have everything to do with him. He is just like all the cuban refs around here who take and keep a job just for the money he cares not for those around him. He needs to be fired and he needs to take Tosca and Amezaga with him. Despite all this, we can turn things around but he has got to go. He is back home in Atlanta for a family gathering of some sort, he should be made to stay there and quit baseball all together. Send him back to cuba with Tosca so they can smoke some gars with the two greatest living souls in Fidel and Raul Castro.

Everyone misses Dan here but atleast Dan's current show can be watched on youtube. I'm sure Flipper misses acting like a queer under many different nicknames posting questions in Lebatard's Monday question asking blog back then.
Posted by: ginrai | May 23, 2009 at 12:28 PM
Welcome back Dan. We (I'm a reader and an employee at MH) have missed you.
Posted by: wizardraz | May 23, 2009 at 01:31 PM
Lebron is no Jordan. Anyone suggesting otherwise simply doesn't know basketball.
And I do not miss Dan AT ALL.

I apologize.
Posted by: Carl Garcia | May 23, 2009 at 02:13 PM
Dan who? So I guess the answer is no.
Posted by: Tom | May 23, 2009 at 02:51 PM
can we please stop the lebron butt kissing? now he is the greatest ever??? what is wrong with the world??? So what?? if he does not hit that shot, the season would have potentially been over, and you say well he did hit the shot, yes, but he should not be there in the first place because the cavs are supposed to be by far the best team in the east....lebron is great, but this is getting ridiculous, he has no rings, has missed a bunch of other game winners, and im sorry to say has mo williams which he has been the difference to the cavs making them exceptionally good, before him the cavs were good....put wade in lebrons shoes with that team and he is in the same spot right now and people are then talking about wade, but nooo never the greatest because this is lebrons world, fake king....kobe is going to take it anyway and everyone is going to jump back on the kobe bandwagon, and then wade will win the ship again in 2010, watch, and everyone will get back on the bandwagon
Posted by: JD | May 23, 2009 at 03:24 PM
Will Dan LeBatard still be writing from the state penn once he is charged with his hacking crime? NO, he was not missed and all your ass kissing is making it worse.

Is there some reason why UM can only field .500 teams in all men's sports anymore? Every year it's the same ****. Understandable with basketball, which has always sucked...but now baseball to go along with football? They'll be kicking us out of the ACC next.
Posted by: billb | May 23, 2009 at 07:51 PM
maybe,,, but tell him the hairplugs don't look like they are working.
sports writing in Miami sucks anyway.
ginrai your attention to detail and command of the English language is amazing. Are you a professor in East LA or something?

fellers,
dan lebatard has only one claim to fame- as host of the weekly "ricky williams radio show' a few years back on WQAM. radio so bad it was entertaining beyond words. the guy is horrible in any medium-didn't even notice his absence from the herald.

Cote don't forget to clean your f***ing zip off the mirror!
Posted by: r. duke | May 24, 2009 at 12:06 AM
I read the LeBatard article on Jim Leyritz. The guy doesn't get it. He's more upset that he can't bring a date home or live like a king in Costa Rica than the obvious. He's a drunk ex MLB player with no life skills. He's obsessed with beating the rap and somehow have baseball recreate wealth for him.
Funny that Stallworth is mentioned also. Both are having lawyers get them off the hook because "the sober victim actually caused their own death in the accident". This shows a denial of alcoholism and skirting any responsibility as a citizen.
Love to be a juror in both cases.

Donald Thomas injured again...!!!
They say he should be ready by training camp- I sure hope they are right because we are going to need this guy to make a run at another AFC East Title and Super Bowl Championship..!!
I think our Defense is going to be tops in the NFL this year. The secondary is going to surprise a lot of people. Jason Allen will pull his head out and contribute in some way this season...yes you heard right-
Jason Allen will contribute.
On Offense, I think we are going to be fun and excitig to watch. The Wildcat will have some new wrinkles that are going to make it deadly and with the addition of Pat White at QB or WR, scoring points is going to be a breeze.
The interesting development will be Ernest Wilford and how he will be used this year.
This guy is 6' 4" and can cause many mismatches. Sparano needs to re-think how to maximize his use whether he likes him personally or not.
The schedule is a lot tougher but I believe we are a lot better and we will dominate the competition from beginning to end and win our first of three Super Bowls.
GO FINS..!!

Dan Le Batard and his temporary sabbatical make me wonder why the hell he bailed in the first place?
Was it because he felt threatened by our own Greg Cote?
Dan is a loud mouth but does make sense at times. The comedic value is worth it just as long as he doesn't over do it..!!
Welcome back man...!! Now do what you do best- talk smack and make me laugh!!
LOL..!!

Today I honor and salute all of you brave men and women who are serving currently or have ever served in the United States armed forces or fought alongside America's armed forces against a common adversary to make this world a better place. Thankyou.
Posted by: r. duke | May 25, 2009 at 05:38 AM
Cote, you actually had a Marlin on your fantasy team? Don't know much about baseball, do you? Here's a tip, the Marlins are bad, very bad.
Posted by: Doc | May 25, 2009 at 06:29 AM
Agree with the duke on this one, I also salute all members of the armed forces past and present, specially those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for America, the greatest country on earth...
Posted by: FZB | May 25, 2009 at 08:07 AM
Jimbo,
we have our servicemen and women in our prayers every day, and on this day in particular. May He who spoke and created the world keep yours, and all of our soldiers undr His Divine protection as they keep the world from the hands of the truly evil who lurk in all corners of the earth.
Posted by: the shadow knows | May 25, 2009 at 08:21 AM
r.duke,
the ole shadow here also echoes your feelings about those who have fallen defending our country, may they rest in peace. the first american faces that my mother saw were of those that took her and the remnants of her village (and thousands more) out of the hellholes created and operated by the germans and their "friends". the footage that ike ordered be filmed showed his wisdom and gave proof to the world of the scope of the destruction of european jewry and of the other groups targeted by "the superior race".

Memorial Day (formerly Decoration Day), was first created to pay honor to fallen Union soldiers of the American Civil War. This day of recognition for those who payed the ultimate price in defense of our Country, was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.
To all the brave men and women who sacrificed so much, so that our Country may be preserved - I honor you all.
