Tococane wins March Madness Haiku Contest!
[Update Wednesday 3-26: The winning haiku-er's prize, a 2008 UM men's basketball postseason media guide, was mailed today].
Congratulations to blogger Tococane for having the top entry in this year's March Madness Haiku Contest. The winning NCAA Tournament-related haiku:
"The Padawan Haith
Will Do Battle With Darth Barnes
The Force Will Prevail"
The committee liked the consistency of the Star Wars theme, and the use of the word padawan (learner or apprentice) to refer to UM's Frank Haith as he set out to challenge his Texas mentor. Mostly the committee liked that this showed a smidgen of originality and rose above a pretty lousy field overall.
Runnerup haiku by raoul duke: "Big Orange Ball Bounce / Vitale's Head Like Basketball / Dick Vitale's Head Bounce"
Third place haiku by OC Dolphin: "Sun Devils Are Out / How Could This Be I Dunno / It's A Committee"
To Tococane: Claim your winning prize asap by emailing me (at gcote@miamiherald.com) with the last three numbers of your IP address. That way I can verify that someone else is not claiming to be you. Your choice of prizes: A Miami Hurricanes 2008 Postseason Media Guide or a 2008 NCAA Men's Final Four Record Book.
Original post:
Welcome to our blog's third annual "March Madness Haiku Contest" celebrating the natural marriage of American men's college basketball and Japanese verse. Of frenetic western athletic passion and mystical Far Eastern poetry.
There are prizes galore for the winning entry. Well, actually a prize (singular) and not so galore. But better than nothing! We'll send the winning haiku-er a 2008 NCAA Tournament record book or a Miami Hurricanes postseason guide or something like that.
Only two rules:
1. You may enter as many times as you like by clicking on 'Comments' below, but only one haiku per comment! In other words, if you have five entries, make them one each in five different comments.
2. Entries must have something to do with March Madness and must be in haiku form: 17 syllables! We prefer but do not insist on the traditional 3-line, 5-7-5 form, only that the total be exactly 17 syllables. Rhyming or no-rhyme is your choice.
In the case of similar haikus the first posted will receive preference in judging. We'll accept entries over the next several days and update this post to give you ample warning when the entry deadline is approaching.
Co-winning haikus from 2007: Bruce with "Slighted Syracuse / Sadness surrounds Snow City / Orange turned to blue." And David Tucker with "The five Gator boys / Only forty minutes left / History awaits."
Winning entry from 2006: Kurt from Boca with "Stay home and watch games / Or check scores from the office / Forget champ by June."
This year let's do even better. Now get to haiku-ing!

Let me break this string of endless 17 syllable dribble for just a bit.
I happen to be on the phone with Mr. Woodcock yesterday. Who by the way, is using a new alias - gee I wonder which one?
Anyway, we were talking about Jason Taylor and all this dancing stuff he is doing. Have to say, that up to this time I was of the opinion that JT's dancing would irk Parcells due to potentially keeping JT away from whatever training Parcells had in store for all the players during this off-season.
Perhaps not. Perhaps Parcells should remember what one of the best coaches of all time did, as part of a training program he mandated to all his players!
Do you guys remember that Vince Lombardi brought in a ballet instructor to give his players ballet classes? His thought being that many of his athletes were too much like immovable, uncoordinated lumps of fat. Particularly those on or near both sides of the line.
Well, I don't know, but it just dawned on me that JT may come back better than ever! Hey, we may all be laughing now, but unless you're Adam Carolla and indeed - you are trying to make people laugh. You are going to want to train and do well. And doing well requires doing the work, which means: Stamina (wind), flexibility, technique, quickness of feet, working as a team, all are required.
I would like to correct an earlier stance and suggest that Parcells keep JT. Heck, he might just have stumbled (pun not intended) unto delivering a season to rival his 06/07 season.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 20, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Well OC if it was good enough for Vince Lombardi maybe Tuna should get ballet lessons for all the guys. Hell it can't hurt I we won't tell anyone.
Posted by: raoul duke | March 20, 2008 at 07:29 PM
Parcells wants to trade him, JT wants to stay. JT has the hammer because he can opt to retire. If he gets any traction in Hollywood, he's gone. Either way it doesn't matter, he isn't going to be with this team when we start winning anyway. Let's hope he'll agree to a trade in any event, let's move on.
Next subject.
Posted by: Tom | March 20, 2008 at 09:17 PM
I wouldn't hope for a trade at all. At retirement age JT is still, arguably our best player. Tom, for someone who has made a blog career by calling out dumb management moves in allowing or forcing Dolphin players to "moved on" then come back to hurt us, that's kinda surprising.
Explanation please and no, I'll keep this subject going if you don't mind.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 20, 2008 at 11:21 PM
I don't forsee Jason Taylor being one of the "heavy hitters" in Hollywood. Some bit roles on B movies anyway. Don't think if he retires, movie business is going to be knocking down his door for big-cutting edge films.
Posted by: Jimbo | March 20, 2008 at 11:30 PM
Jason Taylor will be with the fins this yr and next, then retiring from the NFL and Dolphins.
Posted by: Jimbo | March 20, 2008 at 11:32 PM
Jason Taylor, big time Hollywood? like Jim Brown or OJ or Carl Weathers? WOW, that's saying alot...stick to rushing QB's young man.
Posted by: Jimbo | March 20, 2008 at 11:33 PM
JT could do some "Naked Gun" movies. Those make me laugh harder than "Airplane."
Posted by: raoul duke | March 20, 2008 at 11:45 PM
"Nice Beaver!" I love that shit!
Posted by: Dave in VA | March 21, 2008 at 12:12 AM
Don't see JT being that successful in filmland. Laker fans will remember an equally dashing athletic type who happened to be married to actress, one time Miss USA, Venessa Williams. Rick Fox has been trying for years with no great success. Don't think that Taylor will fare much better.
No, his best role should be as a Dolphin. Retire a Dolphin and give us everything left in the tank. Which as I tried to point out, may be quite substantial.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 21, 2008 at 12:16 AM
Dave.
That was a true classic. Funniest moment in the film. To see Priscilla Presley in Dancing With The Stars, now THAT was almost as funny. Poor Priscilla - has had more facelifts, tucks, Botox, than 50 of her peers. She probably sleeps in a formaldehyde vat.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 21, 2008 at 12:24 AM
OC and Jimbo
I agree with both of you that JT is still a good player. Probably our best player. The problem is because of his age he will no longer be a good player when his teammates are good players. If Jason is only going to be here another 2 or 3 years, which both of you seem to be suggesting, why in the world is it in the Dolphins best interest to keep him? He can help us in the short-term, but we ain't winning in the next 2 years anyway. What we need are players who will be here in 3 years and be productive from that point on. If JT is willing, and that's a big if, we should trade him and get value for him before there is no value left to trade.
OC I appreciated you noticing that I have made my reputation calling out the Dolpins for blunderous trades such as Wes Welker. But Welker was 26 and had a long career in front of him. Same with Chris Chambers. In addition, you failed to mention that I have also called out the Dolphins on blunderous missed trades they did not make such as keeping Marino his last 5 years. That failed trade more than any other stupid move that Dolphins have made set us on the path to where we are right now. While not trading JT is nowhere near the mistake of keeping Marino, it would be a missed opportunity to get value for a player that will not be here when are competitive.
Long term is how we should be thinking. Think long term and hope Parcells is doing the same.

Posted by: Tom | March 21, 2008 at 07:58 AM
Tom,
What the hell are you basing your so called prediction on- that we will not be competitive for the next two to three years?
Why the hell watch any of the games then if you are so sure this will happen??
We haven't even reached the draft yet and you are already talking nonsense.
Parcells history has always been quick turnarounds-Cowboys, Giants, Jets & Pats.
We will be no exception. You can laugh all you want but 10-6 is an accomplishable feat.
As far as JT, Parcells would be a complete disrespectful fool to trade a potential HOF player who can be used as a mentor to the young players coming up.
Regarding MArino, why don't you file that under JJ being an ignorant, egotistical bastard that just couldn't work with Dan on anything and use his talents accordingly.
It was a dictatorship in that he took away what Dan did best and made him rely on a sub par running game that was not able to take the heat off of him. Why didn't he persuade Wayne to go after a big time RB that would have made a difference? It was his fault that out Offense became predictable. Dan should have had the freedom to bomb away at will and call his own plays. JJ was the start of the downward spiral. I hate that little arrogant bastard!

Flipper my acquatic friend
It will take at least 2 years to clean up the mess left by Cam and Saban. I'll be watching to see improvement and because at my core I'm am every bit the fan that you are. It's not nonsense to believe that it takes time to rebuild. Parcells is good but he never was left with the mess he inherited here. So I think he'll be successful, but it is going to take a reasonable amount of time. I hope you're right about 10-6, but I doubt it. Your reasons for not wanting the trade JT are the same reasons we did not trade Marino. In hindsight you have to admit that was a disasterous decision. It was not JJs ignorance that stopped the Marino trade, it was WHs fear of fans like you turning on the Dolphins. Marino's lack of productivity his last 5 years had absolutely nothing to do with JJ. It was simply his own dimishing skills.
Well I hope I answered all of your questions.
Posted by: Tom | March 21, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Marino deserved to go out with dignity. Calling his own shots and timeframe. Like Favre and most all other great ones. Not in an out with the old, in with the new mentality that JJ shaped. Jason Taylor should be no different.
Posted by: OC Dolphin | March 21, 2008 at 12:16 PM
You answered nothing Tom...!!
Diminishing skills- according to you.
He was made one dimensional because of the idiotic play calling of that little midget. Abul-Jabbar was not the answer to the running game. JJ was a pile of horse puckey. He thought that just because he was lucky enough to win two rings in Dallas that the same formula would work in Miami. Obviously it did not..!!
If Marino had a Terrell Davis, he would have rode into the sunset and we would not be having this discussion right now.
OC is right, he should have been able to call his own plays and bomb away at will.
Enough with the Cam bull Tom. He's gone the nightmare is over and Parcells has cleaned house. So what the hell are you talking about regarding "the mess". "The Mess" has been cleaned...!!
Parcells inherited the Pats when they were 1-15 and I believe they ended up 9-7 his first year. That is exactly what I am envisoning here- again, a quick turnaround!
I think maybe Wayne should hire you as an advisor Tom. At least you could be payed some serious cash for your expert opinion.

Which question did I fail to answer. I addressed each and every one that you posed. Now you may not agree with my answers, but I definitely answered all of them.
Let's just agree to disagree on this point.

Good!
We all agree then. JJ was an a-hole for among other things, not handling Marino properly, and two - that Parcells should not treat JT the same or worse.

Well I'm not sure I agree with each of your points OC, but I will agree that most of you agree. But lest us not forget that most of you agreed at this time last year that the Dolphins were going to be much improved in 2007 with our new "offensive genius" Cam Cameron as the head coach. Oops.
JT has every right to do whatever he wants, play or not play. I just believe it is in the longterm interest of the Dolphins to get something for him while he still has value. He will be leaving in two years at most anyway and I, unlike Flipper, do not beleive we will be competing for the playoffs for at least two years. If he won't except a trade, then I hope he stays and doesn't retire, which appears what is likely to happen. Whether JT goes or not is totally up to him.

Hey Flipper
I agree, WH should have hired me last year. If he had, Cam would have never been hired, we would have already drafted our franchise QB and we would have drafted a real WR. As it stands now, we still need a QB and Ginn makes a nice punt returner/third WR.
Says who? Me!

The views I placed above concerning JT and jimma reflect what I feel. Having said that, I do think that Parcells will try to trade JT at the 11th hour. If he is able to do so he will then pick Chris Long. He will also try to snooker a trade out the 1st spot by-way-of Ryan. When it's all said and done, I fear Taylor will be gone, we won't have Ryan but we'll have C. Long, and another two second rounders.

OC
JT will only be gone if he wants to be gone. If he wants to stay, he will stay. He has absolute control and so far he has made it clear he intends to stay which is exactly why Parcells disavowed the recent rumors that he was trying to trade JT. He can't do it without JTs approval because JT can opt to retire. Though I'm sure Parcells wants to send him packing, it won't happen unless JT agrees to go.

Dave in VA what is extremely funny is to go back to Naked Gun movies in which Nuromberg(sp?)OJ's character constantly gets knocked around and s*** kicked out of him post Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. It's like couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

JT is blogging over at ESPN about Dancing with the Stars. Here is the link

I don't care how gay some of you think Dancing with the Stars is, I don't blame JT one bit. His partner is a robo-babe. Damn she's hot. Go get her JT. Pretend she's Tom Brady and take her down hard.
Posted by: Tom | March 21, 2008 at 10:17 PM
Tom I'm not saying a man is actually homosexual just because he likes dancing or is good at it. It's just I don't care for it and the show "Dancing With the Stars" bores me regardless of hot babes. If I want to see hot babes there are other places where they are much hotter and more scantily clad and far more sensual. But to each his own.
Posted by: raoul duke | March 22, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Oh yes I have referred to it as gay but stereotypes can be both funny and/or hurtful depending obviously on the individual, situation, intention etc.

My good friend, I have never watched a second of Dancing with the Stars and never will. You missed my point. After seeing a picture of JTs dancing partner I can definitely see why he's doing it. Just imagine, he gets to touch that babe whervever the f*** he wants for 6 hours a f****** day.

Yeah Tom isn't it amazing how fortunate some guys lives turned out regarding being with beautiful women. Maybe in my next life if there is one...

OC Dolphin,
marino going out with dignity didn't happen because it was HIS timeframe- he needed to retire in the mid 90s, as the later years of the that decade he was decrepit, and could not call a game properly. contrast his exit with that of bret favre, leaving after one of his better seasons of many good seasons. #4 5X the QB that #13 was.

Are you kidding me Cote? With all the great entries to choose from, you chose that lame ass haiku. You better look out or you'll end up being called a vulgar variation of my name.

That was just a tad random raoul.

ok draft talk it is, 24/7. Chris Long? Jake Long? McFadden? Ryan? A trade down? Ted Ginn's mother again?
Maybe it is Brian Brohm as shadow suggests. I would be ok with that. A top ten pick for a 2nd rounder. If we pick up Brohm are any other QB in the first 2 rounds is Beck history or does he get a real chance?

Tom,
maybe if you shut the fck up ...

Raoul Duke- congrats.
Posted by: naples jack,patsfan | March 25, 2008 at 09:21 PM
Thankyou naples jack. It's such an honor. I don't know where to begin or who to thank first as so many were part of this collective creative process. Also thanks go out to Rollo May for granting me greater inight into the nature of the creative process itself and the progressive yet instaneous disolution between subject/object. The duality begins to disappear and whallah "Art." Thank you all once again. It's time for my medication as the nurse is gesturing for me to come up to the nurses station. Good evening all.

The nurses name is Nurse Wratchet. Weird name. Sounds like inhumane tool.
Posted by: raoul duke | March 26, 2008 at 12:13 AM
"instantaneous" too bad Rollo May didn't teach me how to type or spell.
