Joe vs. Fredi (with The Daily Poll)
Yankees
and Marlins at Dolphin Stadium tonight and Saturday to close out spring training, and it's ex-manager Joe Girardi vs. current skipper Fredi Gonzalez. Who would you rather have, right now, leading the Marlins?
Do more than vote in the poll below; elaborate. Also interested in your thoughts on a few other topics...
Vegas over/under on Marlins wins is a modest 68. Sound right?
"Mr. Marlin" Jeff Conine re-signed today for the purpose of retiring a Marlin, which was expected and nice. Is there anybody else to challenge for the Mr. Marlin tag? Mike Lowell, maybe?
Also welcoming commentary on The Incredible Shrinking Yankees. To the delight of Red Sox Nation, NYY arrives in town diminished from the league power they used to be. Native son Alex Rodriguez arrives undiminished, still the best player in baseball. But some (including Boston's David Ortiz) say Marlin Hanley Ramirez will be the one to pass A-Rod for that title within a couple of years. Agreed?
Talkin' baseball! Dammit.

Its hard choose, they both are really good managers in my opinion. But i'll stick with Freddie cause he's still here.

fredi because he wont punt with uggla in the first inning or hanley with 2 strikes.. or pitch josh johnson after a 2 hour rain delay.. god girardi was such a douchebag

Freddy is here now ,and Girardi is gone. They both are young and promising managers.
I'm sticking with Freddy. He's one of us.

Finally some Dolphins news from profootballtalk.com. Does anyone know anything about this guy?
FINS SIGN CROCKER
Posted by Mike Florio on March 28, 2008, 10:37 p.m.
After keeping fairly quiet for the past few weeks, the Miami Dolphins continue to re-make their roster by adding free agent safety Chris Crocker.
Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, it’s a one-year, $1.15 million deal, which includes a $300,000 signing bonus.
Crocker, a five-year veteran, started 14 games for the Falcons in 2007. He spent two years in Atlanta after playing for three seasons in Cleveland.
The Fins’ current online roster shows eight other safeties, including newcomer Keith Davis and holdovers Jason Allen and Yeremiah Bell.

Fredi is a clown. You fans will be sorry joe was run out of town by this moronic owner.

Dave in VA and we'll probably need all eight of those safeties to stay competitive.

Honestly I didn't want to see Girardi go. Girardi and Loria didn't got along well. Like many people, I was really upset when Girardi got fired. Especially the great job Girardi did his first year here. Freddy is our skipper now ,and deserves a chance to get things going.

Joe Torre should manage Marlins.

Don't know if any of you saw this. Some interesting perspectives from bloggers we're unfamiliar with.

Dave in VA
Some interesting takes at that blog. Bottom line it appears that they are as diverse in their views as we are.
A couple of interesting facts have emerged recently. First, Chris Long weighs 267 lbs which is hardly the size of an NFL DE and certainly doesn't fit the Tuna's preference for big players. If they draft Chris Long he looks better suited to be a OLB in a 2-4.
Second, I have read several experts reports of Jake Long and they are saying he may not be suited to be a LT. Something about the quickness of his feet. If that's true, there is no way he is goinng to be the top pick in the draft.
Third, it seems to be the consensus there that Ted Ginn is better suited as a punt/kick returner than a WR. I wholeheartedly agree which means we need a #1 WR.
Fourth, there seems to be disagreement about the Tuna's plans with respect to QB. I will be shocked if our future QB is currently on the roster. I fully expect the Fish to draft a QB no later than round 3 and either John Beck or Josh McCown to be gone by 2010.
Finally, there was not much discussion of trading the top pick. There were a few mentions of trading with Dallas for the #22 and #28 picks, but that is going nowhere unless Dallas is willing to throw in next year's #1 as well. I think it is far more likely that we will trade with KC or Atlanta than with Dallas with KC being my guess for a trading partner if a trade happens at all.
I know this is off topic for this thread but it appeared to be a dead thread anyway so let the Fish talk begin.

Tom- You are right. What are there, 300 Marlin fans out there? Who gives a shit about the Marlins. I have never met a baseball fan who ever admitted to being a marlin fan. They are nothing more then an extended farm system for MLB.

Yeah Chris Long. Just because he had a father who was a monster DE doesn't mean his son won't be anymore than a "never was" in pros. His dad 20 years ago was 6-4 275lbs with a mean streak and great strength. Great bull rusher. Howie would be on small side today. Damn Miami has an unbelieveable amount of work to do or am I missing something?
Posted by: raoul duke | March 30, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Sure wish we had Commie Cam Camoron. Damn those lucky Raven's. He'd know what to do to fix Miami's woes.
Posted by: raoul duke | March 30, 2008 at 03:39 PM
I bet Parcell's just can't believe what he is seeing the more he excavates(sp?)Miami from its proverbial grave. I bet the Tuna frequently feels pretty thirsty just looking at the Fins Dave in VA. God I feel thirsty just thinking about work ahead for them so as not to get run out of town on a rail like everyone else post Shula(who was gently put on a train in first class but still asked to "leave").

Duke, we're all fooling ourselves if we think we won't need many thirst quenchers this upcoming season. The playoff hopes some of our firends have; the thought process is clouded by mushroom tea or sumpin.
I will be excited by improvement. Hope for the future. Youth. Short of another 0-fer scare, I won't be watching the standings too much. This fix will take a couple seasons.

Tom,
it doesn't strike me that a defensive lineman in college translates into an OLB as a pro; was dwight freeney a DL at syracuse? he couldn't get around bryant mckinnie in college but had the speed to get around him when given more room to operate in the pros. i don't think that chris long has the speed of dwight freeney and would be quite blockable as a pass rusher lacking LB speed.

Tom,
who plays a 2-4 defense? 2 down linemen couldn't stop a pop warner running game the way i see it!

Ya know Dave in VA I'm kinda stuck with Direct TV. Now I never thought I find myself saying such a thing but the only reason I got it in the first place was for NFL Ticket. God the thought of seeing every Dolphin game no blackouts no limited regional coverage was irresistable. The Fins have just gotten worse and yet because of Parcell's and the belief things "can't" get any worse I'm going to have to throw the dice again and subscribe one more time.
Makes me think of that Skynyrd tune that I can't recall the name of...
Posted by: raoul duke | March 30, 2008 at 11:57 PM
so umm where is the voting option of John Henry instead of Loria...
ohhhh right, that would be 15k people voting in the biggest landslide ever
