[Updated Thursday morning, 2-15: Hardaway was on damage-control last night, sending out desperate apologies. Too late. No good. As grandma used to say, "You can't unscramble an egg."]
Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim. Do you know what you've done? You have volunteered yourself as the new face of bigotry, of homophobia. Readily, too! Are you that stupid? Are you that brave?
Asked how he'd react to a gay tea
mmate in light of the John Amaechi revelation, the former Heat star said Wednesday on 790 The Ticket's Dan Le Batard show: "I hate gay people. I don't like to be around gay people. I'm homophobic."
Among other jarringly politically incorrect statements.
Hardaway uttered what dare say lots of athletes (and people in general) might believe privately, but to hear a prominent sports figure utter such overt prejudice publicly is pretty stunning.
Give Timmy points for honesty, at least. Those may be the only points he has left.
What he has done, in terms of raw bigotry, is not much different than Michael Richards' recent standup routine laced with N-words. A reputation-ruiner. A career-ender.
Thoughts welcome.

As a Miami Heat fan, and a gay Cuban, I found the remarks made by Tim Hardaway revolting and very upsetting. I can't believe he said what he said on live radio.
Another celebrity opening their mouth, inserting their foot, without thinking about the consequences. Especially saying later that his remarks are no big deal compared to the war in Iraq.
I wonder who's the next celebrity idiot to say something stupid!~

What say the NBA? Nothing? Where is the immediate statement from David Stern that it is not OK to have someone "repesenting" the NBA - on ESPN from Vegas just today - who is, in fact, in favor of agressive job discrimination. If they don't repudiate job discrimination, they in fact endorse it.

Do we speak English in this country anymore?
Dan LeBaturd ought to be ashamed of himself. To think, a writer in a major newspaper wrongly using a charged word like homophobic.
Hardaway hates gays. That's his right as a free-born American.
Hating guys is not always synonymous with fearing gays. Homophobia is the fear of gays/homosexuals.
Let's step up the writing a bit, Cote, and note that that word is being misapplied in an inflammatory way. Homophobia does not equal hatred of gay men.
Homophobia = fear of gay men.
Sheeeeesh! When are people going to learn to speak the language here?

Memo to the Gay Cuban-Heat Fan: why is what Hardaway said stupid? What makes your assessment of him right, and his assessment of you and your kind wrong?
The man has the right to hate gay men if he wants to. His comments may be a lot of things (ignorant, insensitive, lacking compassion, etc.), but his comments are not stupid.
Posted by: Jose Can-snitch-o | February 14, 2007 at 11:29 PM
People need to seriously get thicker skin. If that's the man's honest opinion, then good for him. No harm has come of it. No one got fired for being gay or traded or anything. Many people talk the PC lingo to the public and are really bigots and hipocrites.
I appriciate his cander and respect his honesty. He shouldn't be punished for having unpopular views, he has as much right to say what he said as you have to ignore it and go on with you life if you don't agree.

He's a complete A******! As an African American who's people have faced the same bigotry and hatred, he ought to be ashamed of himself. What does it matter if a teammate is gay or not? As long as he plays hard and contributes to the teams success, who cares what he does on his own time. I think we ought to examine these so-called manly men a little closer. Most times you will find that the most outspoken critics on this issue are the same ones who are sneaking around on the down-low themselves.

Hey Jose,
Listen to the clip. Hardaway admits he is homophoibc. Either Hardaway is a homophobe or he doesn't know what the word means. Just get the facts before you blast Le Batard (although surely this is always to something to criticize le batard for).
Posted by: Jtait | February 15, 2007 at 01:19 AM
I agree with the African American writer;s comment. And furthermore, how stupid is Tim Hardaway. The fear that he would have that a gay player is in the same locker room is happening every day in the league. They all know or suspect who the potentially gay or closeted players are. But they do and say nothing. Most men that feel so strongly about gays are insecure of their own feelings. Tim may be playing for the other team quietly
Posted by: DP | February 15, 2007 at 01:27 AM
tim hardaway was my favorite player when he was with the warriors and i lived in l.a. when i got to miami, where he was already stationed, my attitude changed as soon as i heard him speak, which was way before this most recent diatribe. the guy is an idiot whose "deadly" crossover dribbles (his specialty) were carrying violations which were never called.hell, he wasn't even the best player/leader when he was at UTEP, the late jeep jackson led tha team and died of a heart attack while playing a pick-up game. tim hardaway, take the 13 million bucks pat riley gave you and kindly disappear
Posted by: the shadow knows | February 15, 2007 at 02:05 AM
To correct you, Will Nelson made no statement regarding his own race. He said that Hardway should not be a bigot because he is African American, and African Americans have felt the sting of bigotry first hand.
Furthermore, where do you get off calling Tim Hardaway gay? You falliciously present Homophobia as a manifestation of insecurity with a secret homosexual urge, that is ridiculous! Your claim that you fear somthing that you secretly are or want to become would be like saying people who have Arachnophobia secretly are or want to become spiders rather than just become uncomfortable or shaken in their presence. Silly huh? I thought so.
Oh, and The NBA's "silence" on the matter does not condone Hardaway's comments, instead it just recognizes his right to voice them publicly without censorship. They obviously don't endorse job discrimination based on sexual preference because that is not the policy or practice of the NBA.
You sound like someone who has trouble hearing anything but the echo of thier own voice. News Flash DP: Everyone doesn't share your opinion.

Why do gay people keep comparing themselves with African-Americans? A gay white dude benefits from an instutionalized racist environment in America the same way a gay black guy would in Zimbabwe.
Hate is hate and its morally wrong regardless if its coming from an oppresive majority or the oppressed minority.
It's true Tim has a right to hate but Tim also has a much greater moral responsibility to a society which has afforded him a great living, especially when the said living was the fruits of others who died to make his rights possible.
To be honest the only person Tim should be hating is himself because he has more money than morals. Tim try to be a better person because hate is like love once you turn it on you can't turn it off when you want to.
And to the gay dudes in America sin is sin and anybody who tells you that you are right is lost. God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.
God loves you gay guys but He dislikes your sexual orientation and behaviour the same way He dislikes Tim's hateful condition.

Gays are always making themselves the victims, as if their plight is of the people. Homosexuality is wrong! There's no place for it in sports. Homosexuality has nothing to do with racism. Blacks don't choose to be black. Homosexuals choose their sexual preference. Your not born liking a man. The same way I wasn't born liking a particular kind of woman. It's a preference. You wanna putt from the rough. That's your choice, but don't impose it on me and my family as if it were all okay. I don't hate gays, but I don't condone that crap. Please keep it out of the lockerrooms and in the bedrooms.

They have the right to do with their lives as they please. I simply refuse to join the popularity ride or the political correctness ride just to appease the masses. I dislike the fact that the gay movement is trying to push their issues on me regardless. God gave us the freedom or free will to do as we please. I don't push my lifestyle on anyone the same consideration should be granted to others. Mr.Hardaway you should have express yourself with less anger.

Memo to JTait: Hardaway 'admits' he's homophobic only after LeBaturd misuses that word. Again, homophobia denotes fear of gays. Just like Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13, and arachnophobia is the fear of spiders. If you can't understand that one, JTait, I suggest you turn off the TV set and read a bit more.
Memo to Will Nelson (the African American above): you ask 'What does it matter if a teammate is gay or not?'
I don't know about you all, but I wouldn't want a gay man in the shower with me. I wouldn't want a gay man looking at my penis and especially my booty. It's unnerving to think of a gay man looking at me and simultaneously have sexual thoughts run through his mind. Eeewwwwwww!

Wonderful, Mr. Hardaway no longer has a right to feel the way he feels. If you don't feel the way we tell you to feel, and then how dare you talk about it in a free country, you must be a misguided person.
Why did this person come out? Publicity.
As long as you have people preaching that the values that you possess are wrong, there will be issues.
Remember, these writers and anchors are the same people who preached a historic superbowl when all most of us noticed was the colts versus the bears and what were the latest odds...Would have liked to see Hardaway speak on that as well.
I think all the politically correct people need to go back under their shell. It is getting old.

I am a straight NBA fan who found Tim's comments to be ignorant but not surprising.
Amaechi never came on to a straight NBA player because he respected their sexual orientation. Why don't professional athletes respect gays the same way? Because they are afraid. Afraid of what they don't know and don't understand. Afraid that given the opportunity they might just like it.
Posted by: Michael Freeman | February 15, 2007 at 09:19 AM
Dumb ignorant nigger comes out and runs his mouth. America has no place for blacks, they should all go back to Africa where they belong. Along with the hispanics who come here who pack 27 people in a house and clean and take out my garbage, you should all get the hell out of this country.
I guess i have a right to say all that right? Its a free country, i can say anything hateful and inflamatory and its ok, because we tolerate hate.

Thank you Tim for having the courage to stand up and say what I believe is right. However, you should not have used the word "hate" but other than that, you did good. I respect and admire you a lot more now. Men are born with penis and women with vagina. men can not produce babies but women can. men are supposed to be with women. Unfortunately, America is trying to make people believe otherwise and nowadays, it seems they are forcing people to believe otherwise.
Thanks Tim ---God Bless you.

According to the Bible, a man was put on Earth with a Woman, not another man. So basically, to make homosexuals acceptable in society and giving them rights is the very equivalent of looking at the Most High and telling Him He's wrong. I don't see anything wrong with what Tim Hardaway said. He's telling us how he feels. I'm not very homophobic, but what I've learned growing up is that being gay is wrong. It is! Homosexualism is of the devil. It's wrong and it's UNGODLY! Read your Bible, people. If God saw gays as acceptable, he would've gave Adam a male partner, not Eve. And He wouldn't have destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah either, where MANY gays were living their nasty, UNGODLY homosexual lifestyle.

Memo to Jose Can-snitch-o
These are suppose to be professional athletes, who are being paid a hell of lot of money to do what they do. As long as another man doesn't try to come on to me, or touch me in an inappropriate manner, I would be able to work with him, and that is all that should matter. Here is another one for you, you obviously assume that it (guys taking a peep) isn't happening already! I don't know how many guys there are in the NBA or NFL, but one thing I am sure of. There are still some who are closeted and married, may even be the macho-man life of the party in the locker. And guess what? Yeah you know what I'm going to say, so you just don't know!

Shouldn't a man be able to express an opinion? Amaechi did when he come out of the closet. Was he expecting unanimous approval for his actions and sexual preference? Why can't Mister Hardaway offer his opinion about gay people? I rarely throw parties but when i do I do not invite gays to the get together. Does that make me prejudiced?
Posted by: William Synnott | February 15, 2007 at 10:33 AM
I'm tired of people using the BIBLE to justify their hateful bigotry. The Bible also promotes slavery. If you really read your Bible it also talks about LOVE.
It's amazing to me that an African American male athlete who only 30 or so years ago would be considered GODS curse and treated in the same way, with words of intolerance and hate and who would NOT be aloud to play within the white dominated sports; would now blast at someone who is A.A. and so happens to be gay. God made him that way, black, athletic. Only those who have tendancies themselves would react that way. A straight man or woman comfortable in their own skin would not say those things.
Posted by: Tony | February 15, 2007 at 10:41 AM
Tim Hardaway may have been a good player back in the day, but articulate he's not, and politically correct he's certainly not. No, he won't be running for congress, city commissioner or even dog catcher. But one thing is clear and completely undeniable, he has a right to believe what he believes and if a local radio station thinks his importance in the sport world is great enough to provide him the forum to elicit his opinion-so be it. Let's remember that opinion poll after poll indicate that the overwhelming number of Americans believe that, while homosexuals should not be discriminated against, they do view homosexuality as socially aberrant behavior, and think that efforts to redefine social institutions for the sake of political correctness(ie: Gay Marriage) undermines traditional Christian/Judaic morality.

I find it funny that so many people on this Blog find it perfectly acceptable for this overpaid and obviously undereducated man to spew his venomous hate-filled rantings toward the gay community.
How would you feel if a white player had used the exact same sentences but substituted "BLACK" for gays?? Try it yourself.
The uproar and furor that you would all be demonstrating would be incredible.
If you all want equality for you and your families, you can't pick and choose the groups that get treated with equality.
Shame on all of you for your bullshit attitudes towards Timmy Hardaway's blatent hatred and anger toward gay's in sports.
It will not suprise me in the least if we hear that LITTLE Timmy (btw..a woman reporter told me years ago how 'LITTLE' Timmy really is!)
like the fallen 'Christian'Preacher Ted Haggert is having sex with a male hooker and using Crystal Meth.
When someone is always calling out gays and making the most noise, they are usually trying to deflect attention from their own issues.

Being GAY is wrong in the eyes of God. Along with having hatred, stealing, killing, arrogance, lying, and so on and so forth.....
Whoever has not offended God in any way throw the first stone.
We all need to repent and be forgiven for our trangressions, thru Christ. He's the only way, most have probably heard that before.
Tim was WRONG, no way around it, he has his right to say it, but it does not make it right. I'm not totally comfortable around Gay people but I don't hate them.
Tim one day will be accountable for his words, but I believe in repentence and believe God is in the business of changing HEARTS.

Tim Hardaway certainly has the right to say what he wants. It's a free country. The NBA also has the right to fire him as well. Sponsors have the right to not hire him. If the Boy Scouts have the right to disassociate with gays than the NBA and its sponsors have a right to disassociate with homophobes. Timbo, those were some very expensive words. Why do you think he's back pedalling and apologizing today as much as he is? He must have lost some major contracts which he should have. I would never think of using such hateful rhetoric at work and expect to have have a job in the morning.
Posted by: Cheesehead | February 15, 2007 at 10:57 AM
Sammy,
HOw do you know It's wrong in the eyes of God? Have you spoken to him on this matter? If so, please do tell.. For anyone to cite the bible as means of justification for why being gay is wrong is just being plain naive. You claim that "hatred, stealing, killing, arrogance, lying, and so on and so forth....." are wrong, but, where do you get this information from? How do you know all this to be true? The Bible?
This Bible:
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword."
- spoken by Jesus in Matthew 10:34
"He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad."
- again spoken by Jesus, but in Matthew 12:31
"The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
- Matthew 13:41-42
"But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him."
- Yes, Jesus again, talking about God in Luke 12:5
"I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins."
- John 8:24
"In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power"
- Second Thessalonians 1:8-9
"Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son."
- First Epistle Of John 2:22
What's that smell? Ahh... love is in the air! Can't you just smell all that love coming from the Bible and from Christianity? These are just a few quotes that show how much Jesus and God are down with those that don't submit to His rule and "obey". It's clear to see how much Christians are opposed to hatred, stealing, killing, arrogance, lying, and so on and so forth from this.

Its about time someone said the truth.. little extreme with the hate..but most athletes are uncomfortable around gay people..its just a fact..I guarantee if they did a poll right now, asking "Would you be uncomfortable around a gay male athlete on your team?" it would be around 80% yes..I challenge any of the media outlets to run such a poll..but none of them have the guts to...its unfortunate b/c thats how may people really feel, just afraid to say anything.
Posted by: heat101 | February 15, 2007 at 11:02 AM
the key point here is this: being gay is not a choice. that's why you can compare hardaway's comments to racism. just as you can't change your race, you can't change your sexuality. it is a proven fact that many other types of animal species have gay members. would you say they are making the choice to be gay? I think not. same for humans.
as for using the bible to say being gay is wrong: there's lots of stuff in the bible that we as a society don't abide by. back in the day, people used the bible to justify slavery. and what about pre-marital sex? I don't see all you sexual moralists railing against sex before marriage.
to jose: your last comments don't demonstrate a fear of homosexuality? it grosses you out that a man might think of you sexually? most people would call that fear. but let's not argue semantics. the undeniable fact is that the usage of 'homophobic' in the english language has become synonymous with hate. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/homophobic
as for hardawy's right to say and believe what he wants: of course. but then all of us also have the right to disagree and repudiate him. no one is saying that he broke the law for saying what he believes. we're just saying he's an idiot.

Look I have to condone the fact that the man gave an honest answer period. People always want someone to skate around an answer and provide something that politically correct or pleasing to the ears. They asked the man a question and he gave them his most honest answer. If you didn't want to hear the answer why ask the frickin question?
I don't condone being gay either. I mean I don't impose my will on people that are gay but I'm not for it at all. I mean people have the right to do what they want to do in the own private lives but let's face it. Basketball is a physical sport. Men are making a lot of contact with each other. They are in the lockerroom getting dressed and undressed, taking showers, etc. How comfortable would you feel of Donny over there is a known gay person and he's a couple of stalls down from you taking a shower and you don't know if he's peeping over there checking you out? That's not a pleasant feeling for someone that not gay.
It's no different that me (as a black man) working around a bunch of white executives who have come out and told me that they are racist and don't like black people. How uncomfortable am I going to be working for them or with them everyday?
Posted by: qrumble | February 15, 2007 at 11:20 AM
Ok.. two points.
First, the same comments that Tim Hardaway made about gays were being made 50 years ago by whites against blacks (in some places they're still made). Its funny that America (rightly) cringes when someone uses the word "nigger", but barely bats an eyelash if "faggot" is used. Of course, many people (including in this blog) contend that this is ok because we're born belonging to a particular race, yet (according to them) sexuality is a choice. This leads me to my second point.
So what IF it is a choice? Isn't that what America is all about? Freedom to choose? Lets look at it another way. Religion is a choice. We are not born Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Budhist, etc.; yet we would be outraged if someone went on a radio show and said "I hate Catholics. I don't want to deal with them, don't want to be around them". Being Catholic is not something you're born with; you choose it; yet we defend that choice. Why deny gay people (whether it's inborn or chosen) the same rights and responsibilities that even murderers have? Just because we don't agree? There are a lot of things that we don't agree with, yet allow and protect simply because that's what America is all about. Nazis can march, the KKK can rally, parents can let their children die without medical attention because of religious beliefs and yes.. Tim Hardaway can utter hate filled phrases. I will defend their right to express their hatred, but I also have a right to not spend a single penny on any company or organization that directly or even tacitly supports his views.

"There's a reason no active player in a male team sport has ever come out. There's a reason that the one who does while active would cross the last uncrossed barrier in sports and become a modern-day Jackie Robinson." - Dan Le Batard
Dan Le Batard needs to think before he writes. For him to compare a active sports figure making a choice to come out of the closet to Jackie Robinson being allowed into the major leagues after decades of discrimination is completely ludicrous. First of all no one asked this Amaechi guy to write a book and air his personal sexual preference and experiences to the public for profit. Sexual preference, whether the media realizes it or not, is supposed to be a very private part of a person's life. But in the media world sexual preference sells books and gets ratings. Discrimination is wrong but when you put yourself out there for the media and country to judge you, that's exactly what they're going to do. I'm not shocked by what Tim Hardaway said because if you're a straight guy in this country you've heard what Tim said yesterday before. Leave Tim alone. If you don't like what he said you don't have to but don't act as if living in this country means one must like living with Gay person's. That's not written in the constitution.
Le Batard is usually a thorough and well thought out writer but this article is so media frenzied. Step up your game Dan and don't confuse what black hads to overcome in this country to what the media has done to divide people and create controversy regarding the private issue of sexual preference which is not interesting to most individuals.
People are gay and people are straight. Who really cares?

It seems you have some disdain maybe hate for Christians and or our beliefs. God has given us all free will, and you have yours, so with that said.
That matter is between you and God. God has wrath, its all over the Bible, but with his wrath he brings redemtion through Christ. Its really not that hard to understand.
The Bible is the word of God, and I can give a 100 reasons why I believe if it is, but your heart is hardend, and it seems your angry, so nothing I say will change that. God is going to have to change your heart and he'll give you the oppertunity to ask for it, if has'nt already.

I like to look at the bottom line when it come to issues.. sometimes the simplest explanation of a complex issue is the best way to address it…many say gay is not a choice…bottom line is that life would not endure, procreate, and carry on is this was the case..gay is not natural, bottom line!! The simplest way to put it…

People, stop bringing up the African American race, our history, and our struggle (or any other race i.e. jews) in the same sentence as being Gay. It is not the same thing! Just because you happen to be black does not mean you have to support that lifestyle. Comparing race and existence to action (what people do) is unfair and upsetting. The hate and anger that he demonstrated is similar to what different races have experienced in the past, but don't lump racial injustice and lifestyle together. His opinion is his own, however, I think he could have given it in a better way. If you want to call homosexuals a minority then you have to call pedophiles and beastiality minorities too.

as I said above, homosexuality is natural

the only way you can deny this is if you think there is some kind of conspiracy among scientists. but then again, I suppose many of you think that scientists made up evolution too...

To those who keep claiming that they wouldn't want a homosexual in the same locker room or, heaven forbid!, the same shower, my question is: how do you know there aren't? Do you question everyone you shower with?
