The Heat added a trio that played for Kansas schools: Kansas State's Michael Beasley and Kansas' Mario Chalmers and Darnell Jackson. The Heat has a plethora of forwards since both Beasley and Jackson play the position. Chalmers is a point guard. He hit the game-tying three-pointer that sent the national championship game against Memphis into overtime.
Are you pleased with the Heat's additions? Of course much work remains but this should give them some more talent.
Minnesota now has three future Heat draft picks, including Miami's 2009 first-round selection and two future second rounders.
Scenes from the draft:
Beasley seemed happy but mostly relieved that he ended up in Miami.
His mother described her reaction as "a flood of tears, happy tears."
Beasley said he planned to find time to celebrate with top pick Derrick Rose, third pick O.J. Mayo, fourth pick Russell Westbrook and fifth pick Kevin Love in New York.
We'll have more tomorrow. The Heat is set to introduce Beasley Friday afternoon press conference and perhaps Jackson and Chalmers too.

I'm very excited. I don't know if there's much of a chance of Chalmers starting this year, but if he increases depth or develops into a starter for next season/late this season, that would be icing on the cake.
It seems to me that either Marion or Haslem will be traded for help at the 1 and/or 5. I know Riley mentioned both as part of the nucleus, but this isn't college; you can't get away with 3 F and 2 G, and you certainly can't with like that. I'm expecting more action, but I'm optimistic.

I love the draft we had. Chalmers could've gone as high as 12 so I think he'll push Banks for the starting spot. Jackson is going to be pretty good too. Does this mean Udonis goes to the bench after starting for 4 years?

I'm absolutely thrilled with our draft.
I think Beasley will fit in great down here. Trading for Chalmers was another wonderful move. Our future looks very bright right now.

Definitely happy with the fact that Miami opted to keep the #2 pick and take Beasley. I just wasn't convinced that a Mayo/Wade backcourt was really going to work that well, and Beasley is just too good of a talent not to take.
Also pleasantly surprised that the Heat got Chalmers in the second round. I think he has a good chance of sticking on the roster and even being a contributor as early as next season.

I liked Beasley. Thought there were other options later on though...like since they were going to trade for the 34th pick, I felt they could have had another player selected by that team who could contribute right away.
By the way, Riley's and idiot. He made the draft all about him with all the idiotic talk about Riley will take Mayo crap. He wasn't gaining anything by doing it. His ego just said instead of the draft being about celebrating drafting Beasley, let's spotlight Pat Riley. He smirked like he did something great and the unfortunate part is when he does something so simple, it is a great thing, because he usually finds a way to mess thing up. Remember though, his coaching staff was the reason Beasley was picked, the same reason Wade was picked. Riley still needs to step down.

All of you complaining, get a life.

I am a Jayhawk alumnus and follown them closely. Jackson is tough and quicker than you might initially think. At KU he improved markedly all four years and may well have an upside.
Mario is as steady as they come, plays excellant defense and is an expert at ball theft off the bounce. He is not super quick but manages to drive the basket. He is very smart and unselfish. to

How can someone really be complaining about Pat Riley already? Seriously people, the man made some great moves last night and the fact of the matter is the media is the one who blew his trade talks out of proportion. It's Heat fans like that who give our organization a bad reputation. Anyone who's followed the Heat for an extended period of time should not be surprised at all by how Riles handled the media. I love the trade for Chalmers. I'd like to see us shop Marion around for a center instead of a pg so we can allow the NCAA tournament MVP get minutes on the court. Look to run next year guys! GO HEAT!

Yo the bulls, shouldnt have passed up on Beasley. They took Rose all emotional b.s. taking the hometown kid... and dont get me wrong i know the kid can play, but hes not beasley! Michael is the most talented and he young 2! L. James came into the league really young look at him now.... I am not comparing Beasley and James, but they are in a class by themselves with such natural talentt. I predict Beasley will be rookie of the year. And many people may speculate that Haslem and Marion they got other issues to address.... but Is that not what the heat did to win a championship with Wade and Shaq.... both were the offensive mind-set of the team.... both in double figure points... Chalmer is a natural PG as well... not as good as Rose obviously but even Jordan and Kobe pent time on the bench.... Give this kid some time to develop while Marion Wade and Beasley are tearing up the court this next season! Ill see them in the playoffs!

K-State fan and now Miami Heat fan here, just thought I'd say hello. GO HEAT!
Posted by: Scott | June 27, 2008 at 01:42 PM
I think that the bulls made a mistake. I know people think that Rose will be a great PG, but they had pretty good guards already. It is not every day that you run into a 20 point 10 rebound guy that plays defense. Especially when that was exactly what the bulls needed. Honestly Chicago got Miami's pick and Miami got Chicago's pick. You don't pick players to please fans you chose players to get you over that hump and win a title. Now Miami has 3 starting forwards and I think that we need to trade one of them for a quality center, and some more bench help, like a defensive specialist. Miami has plenty of scorers now with Wade, Marion, Beasley, Banks, Davis, Cook, and Chambers, now we need defensive specialist like a Bowen, and Pose both former Heat players.

All you heat fans were dissing beasley when you thought we were gonna take him.Ya'll said rose is the man, and look at you now ,what a bunch of morons you are.WE got the man!!!!!!!!!!!GOOD LUCK wit your headcase, midget pf, who doesn't play defense!!!!!!!!!!!! Why do ya'll think riley didn't want to take him ? HE knows what ur gettin.booohooohooo ................good luck fools , oh yeah, need a pg ? we got one for ya, not that 2nd rounder chalmers that won't even start LATER FOOLS !!!!!
Posted by: BullsFan19 | June 27, 2008 at 06:51 PM
Yeah, uhh mate, where's your combo that's better than Wade/Marion/Beasley. I'm sure that Miami will be better than Chicago this year, Chicago made the wrong pick, and they are going to suffer because of it.

I love it when people who can't spell try to crap on my team and tell me and my fellow Heat fans that WE'RE stupid...you know who else were head cases in this league? Shaq, Rodman, Anthony Mason, Shawn Kemp, and honestly (don't get me wrong I love the guy) but I think Dwayne Wade could be turning into a bit of a head case (with all his ridiculous endorsements and the fact that he has big SUVs with "D-WADE" written in huge letters across the side of the door. I think those players turned out to be pretty good NBA players too. All of them either went to the finals or won a title. Any other head case that you can name (and I'm sure I'll hear them) I guarantee did not have the skill set and the promise that Mr. Beasley have. So for all you Miami Heat/Michael Beasley haters out there....STOP READING MY NEWSPAPER AND KISS THE RING!!!
Posted by: Dave | June 28, 2008 at 07:46 AM
Yo, Heat fans, You got no pg , no center, you got beasley headcase midget who can't play defense and your gonna say kiss the ring ??????????????? I need to buy some of what ur smokin !!!!!!Donn't worry , when wade's contract is over he will come HOME !!!!!!!!And you'll still have ur nutcase midget powerforward. OH YEAH, and u can use your 2nd rnd pg / chalmers to guard D.ROSE HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Posted by: BullsFan19 | June 28, 2008 at 01:22 PM
First of all, where is your post Jordan championship? Second of all, Rose is the only guy that we will have to guard on your group of losers who can't put up consistent numbers. We had a bunch of injuries last year, what's your excuse? And by the way, who's your center? That's right, there isn't one on your roster, you just play tall power fowards and center who are too skinny to handle any NBA centers. And I do believe Chalmers did guard D. Rose in the NCAA title game and I do believe Chalmers won that battle, won the title, and won the Most Outstanding Player award for the Final Four. So.......you're dumb. Not to mention if we keep Marion, he is one of the best perimeter defenders in the game. Wade's defense was getting better until he got hurt. Haslem can certainly guard any of your nonproductive forwards. The only guy on your team we really have to worry about is Luol Deng who always seems to give us problems. But that's one guy and we have the fix for the rest. And besides, Rose only averaged like half an assist more than Chalmers in college and we're not really bringing him in to score. So yes, Chalmers will guard Rose, and guard him well. Do your homework, and honestly, I still don't get why you are reading my newspaper. Shouldn't you be reading the Chicago Tribune instead of going to a Miami message board just to talk trash? PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS. Rose will not have the impact you expect him to next year because he doesn't have the supporting cast that a point guard needs. And good luck with having your rookie complete transform your losing attitude. Vinny Del Negro was not a very good player and John Paxson i think has only made one shot in his life that was worth anything. You guys should just hire Steve Kerr for something and sign some more guards. Oh, and while I'm on a rant here, your starting shooting guard is Larry Hughes.....LARRY HUGHES. You want to talk about garbage. That guy can barely do anything except play an above average amount of defense. So no, we will not have a problem guarding Rose and neither will most teams in this league. You're gonna have to give him a year or two, maybe even three before you can start thinking of him as the great player you guys think you got. But mark my words, he will not have that much of an impact next year.
Posted by: Dave | June 29, 2008 at 09:24 AM
Also, i guess i left out your comment about Wade leaving....What money are you gonna pay him with? Your two nut jobs who opted out of their contracts want serious cash and they want to be on the team past 2010. Furthermore, what makes you think the Heat aren't going to do everything they can to keep him here? And how many NBA players really leave a team he won a ring with that quickly? Especially when we're starting to put together some serious pieces. Don't be thick. All these rumors of Wade leaving Miami, are just that, rumors. Don't believe the hype. I'm still not convinced that Lebron is gonna leave Cleveland, but I guess I could understand it if they don't get him someone else to play with. And who says the Brooklyn Nets will be a much different team than the one he's on now? They're gonna have to get rid of Carter to clear up cap space if they want to afford Lebron and then who do they have? Devin Harris? Brooke Lopez? Devin Harris has some skills but Lebron basically runs the point wherever he plays. Especially since all the rumors ESPN has kicked up before the draft, I don't trust their rumor mill anymore and I don't see either player leaving their teams. They have too much pride in where they play.

Bulls fan should look at their team's history before talking smack.
They took:
Tyrus Thomas over Aldridge & Roy
Traded Brand to pick Chandler
Traded Chandler for Ben Wallace???
Gordon & Deng over Igudala/Al Jefferson/Josh Smith
Jay Williams over Amare Stoudimire or Caron Butler
Marcus Fizer taken with the 4th Pick/Mike Miller went 5th.
Why Question a Bulls Draft pick??? I doubt Rose will be a bust but the Bulls have a terrible track record over the past 8 yrs.
Posted by: dduck | June 29, 2008 at 03:38 PM
to further my las point the Heat has drafted Wade & Butler
Signed Odom
Traded for Shaq
Won a Title
Unloaded the fat contract of the now Big Stiff
and got Marion
Drafted Cook late 1st rd(pick swap)
Now they Draft Beasley
I like our chances.
