Careful, now

One win doesn't exactly mean the Heat is going to start rolling, but if the team isn't careful, it might ruin a perfectly good thing.
Couldn't help but notice that on the Sportscenter highlights they showed the records of the worst teams in the league, and the Heat is flirting with falling out of the bottom three. A win here or there and all of sudden the Heat will have to get lucky to get a top-two draft pick as opposed to having to be unlucky to fall out of one of those spots. And, to me, the two immediate impact players in the draft are Beasley and Rose, and they'll most likely go 1-2.
Yes, that's what this season has come to. At least at this point it has. And there's nothing wrong with playing exciting, close games with Dwyane going nuts in every fourth quarter -- as long as it comes with a loss. Because it'll mean more wins next year.
8 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot? Yikes the East is bad.

8 and 1/2 games out of the playoffs and your rooting for them to lose? C'mon that kinda stuff makes you lose readers.

That's pretty lame, i know if we still stink it up it would result in a better draft pick next year...but i could never root for my team to loose...let what happens happen and take it from there and stop begging when your team wins a game for once ! 8 and a half out we can still make it sadly enough, and then you better be there to support your HEAT when we are the 8th seed battling it out for the championship like everybody else !
I too salivate about the chance of rebuilding with guys like BEASLEY-E GORDON-MAYO, but rooting against your team is weak , very weak IZZ ???
LET'S GO HEAT THIS YEAR AND ALL THE OTHERS !
WE WILL GET A GOOD PICK REGARDLESS AND WE ARE GONNA TRADE TO CLEAR UP SPACE FOR NEXT YEAR ! Why panic , at least we got DWADE to build around......
tell that to a milwaukee , new york , new jersey , sacramento ,charlotte etc.... FAN.
The only loss I want is to trim up Shaq's contract so we had a better shot to lure top free agents !
FAT CHANCE....I KNOW .

actually its true, he has a point....The heat should tank the season in peace, quietly have one of the top 2 worst records in the league and pray for a number or number 2 pick...

Look, let's say we get the number 8 seed and play boston (maybe orlando but i still think boston)...The only thing that is going to happen is that we are going to get embarrassed by boston, garnett is going to go crazy, nobody can cover paul pierce on our team, and ray allen will be left open all day with out horrible permeter defense. If i'm riley, i'm happy with losing games at this point....sure make them competitive so it looks like ur trying, but riley is smart, hes still a great coach, but hes also president of operations and he knows a top 2 pick with impact players beasley or rose would benefit this franchise for the 08-09 season.

We have no chance in the playoffs this year, we will get killed by boston, or orlando, maybe even washington at this point, and toronto as well. As for the finals, san antonio will destroy us in the finals...So lets tank quietly and get beasley or rose in the draft, just watch how much better it will turn out and u will be happy we had a bad season because we were blessed with a player like one of those 2. Shaq won't have to do so much and wade would have a true supertsar next to him at a nice salary, and could be resigned once shaq retired in 2010. Then we could also bring in someone else, say maybe KOBE BRYANT? (he'll be a free agent when shaq retires)

Provocativeee

dont forget the NBA is a lottery and there is no garauntee for the top 2 picks. San Antonio has been the only one to get lucky when they got Duncan.

And once you get to the playoffs, anything can happen. We saw it with the heat and marlins.

First, I agree that it is weak to root for your team to lose. True fans don't do that. People who like basketball for basketball don't do that.

Second, the Heat have about a 1% chance (if that) to get that 8th seed...

Third, if the Heat did get the 8th seed, they would play Boston. BUT IT WOULD NOT BE ANY MORE EMBARASSING THAT THE CHICAGO SWEEP LAST YEAR. I THINK THE HEAT COULD WIN 2 GAMES, IF SHAQ AND WADE WERE HEALTHY. THE HEAT'S 5 of WILLIAMS, WADE, WRIGHT, HASLEM, AND SHAQ IS NOT BAD. IT'S THE BENCH THAT KILLS THE TEAM. PLAYERS 6-12 ARE JOURNEYMEN.

Let me fill you all in on a story little publicized outside of Indiana. Last year the Pacers finished 20th in the league, at 35-47, and the 76ers had the same record but finished 21st by virtue of the tiebreaker. Now the Pacers had traded away their first round pick, but it was TOP 10 protected. If the Pacers had lost one more game, their lottery pick would have been almost garuanteed to be in the top 10, unless someone 11 to 14 moved into the top 5. Instead of using a lost season to get younger players experience, resting veterans and looking to the next year, the Pacers tried to win games that were meaningless for anything except pride. Key players (Jermaine O'Neal, Jamaal Tinsley, Jeff Foster) aggravated injuries instead of resting them, the growth of promising talent was stunted (Ike Diogu, Danny Granger), and the Pacers lost their draft pick which could have been Acie Law, Thaddeus Young, Al Thorton, Sean Williams, or Marco Bellini.

You're not rooting against your team, you're looking to the future.

If you root for your team to lose, THEN u ain't a TRUE fan. They can win some games. What then, if they don't get the first or second pick? Don't matter what pick u get, u just have to pick wisely. Do I need to remind u that Wade was the fifth pick? (even it was a great 03' class). Does LBJ or MELO have a ring like my boy DWade?
Wasn't Ginobili a secound round pick? Or Kobe 13th pick? D.Cook was up the 20, but he has a bright future in my opinion. So what, we don't get the first pick or second?
So GO HEAT!!! Boston ur next!!!

Shaq is done, Wade is still hurt and Riley is too old to muster the energy to make it work. Tanking the season in hopes of getting a good draft pick would suck, but trying their best and not doing much better would suck even more.

jw JC..u say if heat get 8th seed theyll play boston or maybe orlando..wtf happened to detroit, the best team in the east? and ya miami needs to lose. not like theyll have to try considering they suck so bad

The writer has it correct

If we dont get one of those 2 picks - we are toast next year as well. We have a team that has a lack of talent (per Magic Johnson) and we will get rolled in Round 1 of any playoff matchup. We have no money to get a free agent that will get us out of this mess.

Wade, a brilliant player, is playing with his future as well. The leg is bad - and there is no reason why the heat should not shut him down. The fact that he is playing right now is a joke.

We fall out of those top 2 draft choices, be prepared for more of the same next year. Look at how good some of these rooks are in the nba right now - look at the seattle guy and portland guy. Thats what we need in June. Forget about - oh, its about winning. Its about winning by losing.

Miami Heat Fans and Media:

Deos anyone else wonder why Shaq has been allowed to claim injury so that he will not get embarrased by not being picked by the coaches as an All-Star?

It seems very clear to me that Miami Heat and Pat Riley are trying to keep Shaq on IR so that Shaq would continue his other streak alive. You all remember that Pat Riley pulled Shaq out of game to make sure he was not going to make NBA history by being fouled out in most consecutive games.

Why aren't anyone questioning the coach here? Instead of criticizing Shaq for being out of shape and lazy, Pat Riley is rewarding him with additional rest by placing him on IR. THIS IS SAD !!!!!!!!

the heat are a travesty, u miserable fans will never get back to a championship. Shaq's career ended when he left THE GREAT, and yes I said THE GREAT LOS ANGELES LAKERS! Hey, thejuandiggler, r u on medication? Kobe will NEVER leave LA, ESPECIALLY not for Miami. Man, but seriously, i feel for u miami pple, ur sport's teams are really sorry. Dolphins, Heat, etc......

WHAT???? wtf u talking about? THE HEAT WILL BE BACK NEXT SEASON, SO NO THE HEAT ARE NOT HORRIBLE. MAN.....

that a-hole heatarehorible is a puzzy!!! shut your mouth, you sound like a little bitch

The Heat have been my team ever since I was five years old and my father took me to games where Sunvold, Sparrow, Seikaly and others would get killed each night. It was still fun to go but the point is, once you taste what it's like to win, you want your team to continue to do just that. This team is not nearly as bad as it is playing, but unfortunately they have a losing mentality right now. I don't root for us to lose, but I do realize that it is perhaps our best chance of getting a quality player (I personally favor Eric Gordon-a stud of a scorer who can play one or two) in order to return to contention the following year which then gives Wade more incentive to sign with us again when his contract expires. If we do make the playoffs, it's a good thing, but my view is that any year you don't win the title is a failure. Your goal is to win it all, or should be, and if it isn't, then you need to rethink your approach. Climbing the ladder each year does not work. You need to put the best team on the floor that you can and the truth is that these guys cannot win it, at least right now, but they might be able to next year with some roster manipulation. Just as easily as we have fallen from the NBA elite we can climb back up it.

"Just as easily as we have fallen from the NBA elite we can climb back up it."

Yea, especially in the east. get some quality player(s) to surround Dwade and being that the heat play in the garbage conference (excluding celtics and detriot) theyll be back in the playoffs

don't be surprised to see the Knicks in the finals...

Its safe to say that the Heat were no more than a fluke two years ago and the organization is in horrible shape. They didn't earn that 2006 title, you can thank the NBA refs for handing that over and for smacking Cuban back. Does anyone realize how devasting the Shaq trade was for the long term success of the Heat? Miami lost Caron Butler in that trade and is now an All Star for a strong playoff contender. If the Heat do get a great lotter pick, I would hope they'd do better with managing their future this time. Franchises like the Heat are what kills this league.

All of this discussion is mute. Heat is pathetic and will come in last place.

YOU GUYS WHO WANT THIS TEAM TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS ARE STUPID. iF WE GET THAT NUMBER ONE PICK, WE ARE BACK TO BEING THE TOP TEAM IN THE EAST WITH A FEW MORE MOVES. WHICH IS DIFFICULT. THIS KID BEASLEY IS A BEAST. HE MIGHT BE BETTER THAN JAMES OR ANTHONY. HIM WITH WADE WOULD BE A MISMATCH FOR ANYBODY IN THE LEAGUE. PRAY FOR THAT NUMBER ONE PICK AND RILEY STEPPING DOWN WOULD BE ANOTHER GREAT THING. BELIEVE ME. FOR THOSE OF YOU WISHING FOR THE PLAYOFFS. YOUR HEAR IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE BUT IT WOULD BE RIDICULOUS TO WANT TO DO THAT NOW. TRUST ME, GET THAT NUMBER ONE PICK. BEASLEY PUTS US BACK IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. HE'S UNBELIEVABLE.

You are living in a dream world. Don't you realize that one player or two players a championship does not make. Nor can you buy your way to the championship. The Heat have long taken the lazy way of excellence in basketball. They approached the regular season with sloppiness and lack of interest and continue to bet their whole wad on the post season. It was a fluke a few years ago and they will never return to the championship again without hard work day in and day out. Last years blowout by Chicago should have been their wake up call. The Heat need to learn from the Pistons and other teams like the Spurs who consistantly compete for the win every single night.

Whoever said Kobe Bryant might end up on the Heat.. you must be mentally challenged.. why on earth would Kobe follow Shaq? Reguardless if Shaq is retired by then. The thought of it sickens me, and im sure it'd sicken Kobe as well.

Why wont you people ever realize, Kobe is NEVER going to not be a Laker. NEVER!!

the losing record will be all for naught unless bennett salvatore is running the ping pong balls

I would just like to point out that the celtics and the grizzlies tanked it last year in hopes of the durant-oden sweepstakes, and the ping pong balls punished them by giving the top selections to portland and seatle. So i wouldn't go cheering for the heat to lose or the Gods of Karma may get you.... slight note, if karma didn't punish the celtics we'd be looking at pierce and durant/oden instead of the Three headed monster roaming in Boston today... funny how things work out.

officially the heat have no hope in making much of a comeback. The best thing for them to do is to play it easy and rest their star players like wade and o neal and all key players.. have them play in games. Who really cares if they have the worst reason right now. Next season the records don't matter. They make good start next year to show this year was really nothing.

if heat can win the championship with the current starting line up years ago, they still can do it. it is how much they wan to win, with strong mind set n no injury... honestly, as their fans, i m disappointed with how they played this seasons... hurts...

if if's were fifths...

The draft lottery was made so teams cant do this, i would laugh if the heat decided to blow it and didnt get the top pick, but with a team with Wade and Shaq, theres no excuse to be this bad

Da Heats SUck! Shaq Sucks this is a laka fan over here and shaq sucks!!!!! He is a lazy fat idiot . If u guys even think dat u r gonna make it to da playoffs.. then think again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

miami heat stinks

Does anyone have an idea of who the possible top two draft picks will be at this early stage. The Heat do have a very good chance of getting one of them but its more likely a 4th overall pick.

but the heat back here in Melb are very popular and we all wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the season

cmon the heat arent gonna win a champoinship ever again with a lineup like this. they might as well just drop out of the league.

P.S. Kobe Rocks!!!!!! Shaq SUcks!!!!!!
