"Enough?" Amen.
I doubt David Frum and I would ever agree on much. He is a self-described conservative Republican, a one-time volunteer for Ronald Reagan, a speechwriter for our most recent President Bush. But we do agree on his scathing assessment of Rush Limbaugh and his Svengali-like hold on the Grand Old Party, as outlined in Frum's recent Newsweek cover story. Frum describes Limbaugh as an "ego-driven" man who will never let the best interests of the party, much less the nation, interfere with the best interests of Rush.
Frum, who's taken some incoming rounds from his fellow conservatives for daring to express the apostate view that the party must adapt and evolve, writes of the emails he gets when he dares criticize the all-knowing Mr. Limbaugh.
"Most of these e-mails say some version of the same thing: if you don't agree with Rush, quit calling yourself a conservative and get out of the Republican Party. There's the perfect culmination of the outlook Rush Limbaugh has taught his fans and followers: we want to transform the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower and Reagan into a party of unanimous dittoheads—and we don't care how much the party has to shrink to do it. That's not the language of politics. It's the language of a cult."
Which is pretty much what I've been getting at in various and sundry columns about the party in recent years. It frequently seems less a polticial entity than a coterie of true believers where ideological discipline is rigidly enforced and questions are not allowed. And that way lies irrelevance.

The Republicans have let their party be hijacked by Limbaugh. Rush is an political terrorist who sits by in his studio lobbying bombs and causing mayhem all for the sake of his ratings. Rush sits there on his large behind demanding that the party do this or that, asking for the president to fail and getting his "doo doo" heads hysterical and frothing at the mouth. He doesn't have to do any of the hard work of politics. Rush doesn't have to be tolerant or compromise. All he has to do is sit there and bloviate. As long as the GOP allows Rush to set the agenda the party is going to be stuck in the mess it finds itself in. Rush offers nothing to the GOP or the nation other than hate, ignorance and intolerance. The GOP has to distance itself from Rush. An albatross the size of Rush will never let the party rise from the abysmal depths of George W. Bush's legacy.

Did I miss something? Did Rush Limbaugh win the last election? Is that why democrats and lefty media types are in his jock -- fulfilling their duties as the opposition party?
Or is it simply that boys like carville and emanuel and begala have no one else to blame the 32 percent dump in the stock market since inauguration day so they cast Limbaugh as a scapegoat?
Can it be the media doesn't want to report Obama's vetting process for his cabinet was an utter failure so let's sic the radio show host instead?
Can it be that the house democrats that just passed $3 TRILLION in spending, stimulus, TARP, and omnibus bills want to get us looking the other way while our country goes into debt through 2087?
Find something significant to write about Mr. Pitts. You should be better than this. Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer, nothing more or less. You should know we're smarter than this load of manure.

Pete,
IfRush is just an unelected entertainer, then why does everyone in the GOP have to kiss his inmense, odorous rear end? The reson Rush is being targeted by the Democrats is that he is the de facto leader of the party. If you don't like that take it up with the GOP.
As far as the economic debacle we find ourselves in. That fine mess is the result of conservative policies and deregulation advocated and implemented by the GOP. In order to get out of the hole that the conservatives have dug themselves into, you have to admit your mistakes and take responsibility for your actions. As long as you keep pointing the finger at convenient scapegoats you will avoid doing the necessary work of examining the mistakes that put you and the country in this mess. Worse yet you will not learn from your mistakes and will be doomed to repeat them. I don't care about the future of the GOP, but your mistakes are likely to cause even more damage to our beloved country. Please act like the adults you claim to be, admit your mistakes and so not repeat them in the future. Not just for your sake but for the sake of the country you claim to love.
If you are smarter than manure, you should act smarter than manure. renounce Rush and his hysterical histrionics and get yourselves a responsible leader of the party. Until then you will be doomed to remain as manure.
