This is why, my law enforcement friends tell me breaking and entering when someone might be home in the country is virtually non-existent in my part of the world. The bad guys just assume everyone out here is armed and trigger happy and for the most part they are right.

I'd be reluctant to shoot a burglar in the legs. The dogs might break a tooth.
