My wife's late grandfather, a stern old Patriarch of his church, believed the Bible said animals had no thoughts or emotions.
He once had a dog that had grown old in his service at his farm. The old man had no problem with taking it out back, shooting it, and coming in to eat dinner.
As you can imagine, he was a joy to be around.
