Those wacky Canadians.
The Commission de toponymie asserts that the parish's name refers to nearby Lake Témiscouata, the sense of haha here being an archaic French word for an unexpected obstacle or abruptly ending path,[5] see ha-ha. The Louis may refer to Louis Marquis, one of the first colonists of the region, or Louis-Antoine Proulx, vicar of Rivière-du-Loup, or perhaps the abbot Louis-Nicolas Bernier.

Years ago, we rode through there and stopped in amusement at the name. Took a picture of Mrs. O. in front of a nice white painted rock arrangement (as I recall -- maybe it was flowers) spelling out the strange toponym. Then, seeing no explanatory signage whatsoever, we rode on, down the Transcanada, along Lac Temiscouala, to Saint-Bubba-de-Yeehaw, in New Brunswick, where the Tourist Office explained that we shouldn't have eaten that wild mushroom poutine, and that the effects would wear off soon.
