I had a friend who went to this event knowing only three German words: bier (which he pronounced "beer" if you can imagine), bitte, and danke.
It turns out, that was more than enough.

Steve: oddly enough, your friend had the proper pronunciation for "bier." Close enough, anyway. Oh...and an amazing number of Germans speak English, many of them fluently. (Lived there five years, me, courtesy of the U.S. Army.)
