I fail to see why this was a problem.
Appose is a proper word.
ap·pose [uh-pohz]
verb (used with object), ap·posed, ap·pos·ing.
1.
to place side by side, as two things; place next to; juxtapose.
2.
to put or apply (one thing) to or near to another.
This would seem to be a case of the two opposing sides of the question attempting to agree, and eliminate their differences.
As in: "Politics makes strange bedfellows." and other sage advice.
I blame algore ... and spellcheck ...
