"While urine cultures have been the gold standard..."

People always say urine is sterile, but I never really bought it. Bacteria and viruses are ubiquitous, and just because someone doesn't have leptospirosis, does not mean there is nothing else in their piss.

Certain members of my family like asparagus.
I know darn well that their urine is sterile because nothing could survive in the radioactive waste dump that is their pee a couple of hours later.

The standard method of capturing a urine sample in a cup can be risky..
You mean all those samples I gave and no one TOLD me?

Thankfully, I never bought into the silly notion that urine was sterile. But I must leave now. I'm going off to help Barbara Boxer save the polar bears.

T. E. Lawrence thought it was, or at least the Bedouin he hung around with did. According to Seven Pillars of Wisdom, after a fight, they'd have the youngest boy available urinate on wounds.

Omni, perhaps they thought that young boys' urine was sterile, or was imbued with something that made their wounds sterile.
BTW, I learned while in South Sfrica that some southern African tribes believe goat urine is a sterilizing fluid, although not to be taken internally...
