I can remember when supposedly serious, intelligent people argued that animals could not feel emotions.
Maybe their pets couldn't; the ability is there but it needs nurturing.
Joe and Stewie can really mess up a room when they get into rip-roaring, growling, knocking-each-other-over fights. With never a drop of blood shed and time-outs to pant side by side.
And when one has to go to the Vet with the other left behind, the one at home cries and shivers the whole time they're apart.
So long as it's consensual, go for it.

Sheep and Deer are in the same biological ... um ... "family" ... (genus? phyla? WTD, y'all think I majored in Zoology?)
This is not really that much different than if a human being would ... um ... well, there's this old joke about the Polish guy who werks @ the zoo, in the structure that contains the simians ... um ...
