Addendum to the last comment: I was astonished about 40 years ago to find that many inhabitants of Buffalo did not understand the city's common nickname, "The Armpit of the East".
I understand that the situation is much improved, although the inhabitants are probably unaware of any difference.

Perty much so, Steve ... in my varied travels, I've sorta noticed that locals become so accustomed to the tastes or odors of the vernacular ambiance that they don't really notice it any more ... merely observin' ...
