I went out on a fishing boat from St. Augustine once. I don't know about the drunk part but we did go around in a lot of circles and the boat ran out of gas about two miles from the dock.
Interesting trip. One-timer.

Is Dave getting paid by the 'tow' now? I've never been in a boat and have never had any desire to get on one either. With my luck, if I did, this would be the guy driving the boat.

I'd go with a state of inebriation...

"...the stranded pair lost patience and managed to get their own boat working again - meaning THEY had to tow their own rescuer home." Bad idea -- you are liable for any damage to a boat you are towing; towboats are insured for that, while most pleasure boaters are not.
Rescue the drunk and let the Coast Guard worry about the boat.
