In my experience with chickens, it isn't the smell or hygiene that are the major issues. It's the fact that chickens, even those on some pretty major drugs, greet the dawn with great enthusiasm.
Most birds do. My wife once stormed out of our place at 6:30 in the morning to tell off a neighbor feeding a mob of ducks at that time.
She (my wife) was in her nightgown and barefoot at the time, so she definitely made an impression.
This was, of course, in Florida.
