BIG FUN IN CAIRNS THIS WEEKEND

Toad Day Out

Key Excerpt:

Organisers want residents to collect as many toads as possible on Saturday night and take them alive to a Trinity Park collection centre on Sunday morning...

"The toads will be weighed and measured for possible prizes," Ms Ahrens told The Cairns Post.

"The idea is that they will be disposed of humanely by refrigeration and then freezing.

Well that's a cold attitude. Poor froggies.

I can see the movie now, "Weekend at Bernie's" starring Michigan J. Frog.

*Brrrrrrrrribbit*

Chill out, Sioux.

Now that's what I call giving a guest the cold shoulder!

Whomever opens that fridge later had probably ought to sniff the ice cream before eating it. If I were the toads, I'd probably leave behind a "gift" too!

Well I can't think of a more enjoyable way to spend the day!

The idea is that they will be disposed of humanely by refrigeration and then freezing.

In other news, next week the PTA will be holding a Toadcicle Sale.

"Cane Toad" WBAGNFA Palin baby.

Yeah, but who is *ever* going to use those refrigerators again?

Stone Cold Toads wbagnf something.

Since March 28th is "something on a stick day"'and we're going to have frozen toads.........And sticks........Guess what?

Toad the Wet Cold Frozen Sproket

I'll never be able to read "Wind in the Willows" again.

The way they pronounce Cairns, you might think they were talking about Cannes.

Oh, the indignity...

(scan down to 7th picture)

There's stuff in my freezer that I bet could still take revenge if thawed. Take care, Cairnies.

(And where's PETA in all this?)

Oh, I think PETA is doing just fine right where they are...

Yes indeedy...

Steve, do ya s'pose if we alerted PETA to our next sheep dog trial, they would come protest?

Testing...

Here in my part of Tampa, Cane Toads are a real problem. They are quite toxic to animals. Their toxin can damage a dogs central nervous system and their heart. My mother's dog has twice duked it out with one. The first one was big enough to fill a dinner plate. Needless to say, the vet bills were not pretty. The most effective and humane way to kill them is to freeze them.

Steve----There's nothing wrong with the PETA ad at all.

Not to get all academic and stuff, but Dorakey nailed the issue. They're exotic to Australia, and not only are they toxic but they displace native species. Sorry, toadies.

And if you checked out the video, where they show brief images of the animals, it really does seem cruel and inhumane treatment. Of course on their show they show the whole photo shoot. The funny part of the episode is when Bruce actually asks Khloe if she thinks she could stand to lose a few pounds...! Sorry Bruce, you lost me on that one...

SMACKS all blog guys that drooled over that hussy Kloe.

I didn't realize Frog legs could be served cold.

"The toads will be weighed and measured for possible prizes," Ms Ahrens told The Cairns Post.

Meh--We might give them, we might not.

Seems there was a book, set in S. FL, that included a dog and a dog food eating toad. I'm having trouble remembering what it was. :)

I may not be in Cairns, but I might well be refrigerated and frozen by next week....

Next week we have the biggest release from our local resevoir since 1966... It's not just the Red river overflowing it's lots of other less well known rivers flowing over here..

Ice jammed, EB

I hope they save the legs for Brunch!
After all...What did the one lesbian toad say to the other?
Hmmmm we do taste like frog legs.
NTTIATWWT

.
Seems a terrible waste. Couldn't they be made into stools or something?
.

...or trucks...

sorry I'm not keeping up. Today a parrot bit my right index finger. Hard to type. Even harder for the parrot.

I've been doing some smacking for you and Siouxie, Annie. Siouxie is knee deep in taxes. Hope your finger feels better soon. So when is the parrot's funeral?

He was delicious. Closed casket, under glass.

R.I.P. Polly

May it rest in Orange Sauce.

Taste like Chicken?

Annie or the parrot?

Siouxie! I'm surprised at you!

Squawk! Siouxie want a smackie?

I got mad at him, and he said, "Oh, sh1t." Then I had to laugh...and get a tourniquet.

Whut?? I meant your finger. Sheesh.

On that note...I'm off. Bedtime here in the Eastern Standard Blogging Zone.

Nite, Siouxie!
Yes, me too, soon. Gotta rest my mangled finger.

Good morning all you good night people.Ron's day is just beginning.

My cat,Charlie, has never tried parrot, but he's willing.

Coffee's on.

I don't know about anyone else, but slowly freezing a cold-blooded animal doesn't sound particularly humane to me. Intuitively, I would think something much quicker would be the more humane way to go (assuming you can't just live and let live; since we don't have that variety of toad round these parts, I don't really know what that would entail).

If I'm not mistaken, in the colder months, the cooling and freezing process happens to them naturally, anyway. And if it's gradual, it's not like dropping them into liquid nitrogen...though that could be interesting.

Cane toads kill a lot of the native frogs and other animals because they are poisonous. And they breed worse than rabbits, so population control is critical. I think the whole thing sounds like fun.

This from a girl who used to collect ordinary toads as a child.

Coffee, juice and doughnuts on the table.
In this great nation, I'm sure we can have honest disagreements about toad-chilling without rancor. I actually think chilling and freezing is pretty humane for an amphibian...certainly better than dropping live lobsters into the pot. (Yeah, I know lobsters are crustaceans, but they both fall into the category of critters I'd rather not have in my family room.)
And yes, Shelli, I remember that guy well;)

*looks around to see if nursecindy is about*
*checks peta ad*
Wowsa!

Morning all. Glorious rain in the ATL today.

P.S. Annie...I looked in all the stores, but I couldn't find a 'sorry about your parrot bite' card.

But I hope you heal quickly. Judging from his comment, I think the parrot is suitably chastened.

I'd like to propose that we send them ALL of our Congress Toads, and other assorted Political Toads. Not only would they win prizes (after all they are world renowned for their bloated condition) but think how much easier it would be to solve all our current problems without the politicians help.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, "Politicians aren't the solution, politicians are the problem."

Thanks, Betsy.

Betsy, it's not a card, but maybe this?

Thanks, Betsy. *snork* @ fivver!
It's hard to type - index finger is quite mangled.

In my old neighborhood, we close the rosds and have crossing guards for the critters http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_update/41418297.html ( I lost my linky helper cheatsheet)

Sorry-roads, not rosds

Fivver...dang. Somebody always steals my good ideas before I have them.
