THE WILD KINGDOM OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
For the second year in a row, we have foxes living in our backyard. This year there are two families. The moms mostly stay in the bushes, looking nervous, while the baby foxes, also known as "kits," or "baby foxes," race around banging into things, like little furred bumper cars. Here are some exclusive BlurCam photos of the kits.

Aww...
Where's the foxy mama?

In the bushes, looking nervous. Can't you read? Stupid feline.

The really cool thing about having foxes in the backyard?

The really cool thing about having foxes in the backyard?
They eat the squirrels.
Posted by: wiredog | May 16, 2008 at 08:16 AM
The blog software hiccuped there.
Posted by: wiredog | May 16, 2008 at 08:17 AM
They make nice fur coats, too.

Foxes!!
Hey, wait a big American minute ....

Those are so cute. And they will catch vermin that might otherwise get in the house. Just let them do their thing and this may make up for the failed badgercam a while back...

So sweet! Tell Sophie not to touch them - unless she wants to never swallow again. (Foxes easily get rabies)
Yes, I'm a buzzkill.
But their lttle heads look so cute swinging on the end of a nice fox fur wrap!
Again - buzzkill.

Punkin beat me to the rabies warning... I ride on the train with a Vet who is really, really strong on that point.
Then again, Punkin beats up a lot of people.
Less buzzkill-like -- Hey, Dave. Could you get one of those wireless webcams to provide hours of entertainment for those who "want to wuv those cute widdle creatures" but don't want the hassle of gettin shots in the stomach every day for a month?

So cute!

No need to be concerned about rabies where you see several kits together. If you see a normally wild animal alone, showing no fear of humans, get away.
That being said, please watch the kits from a distance and let them stay wild. They are beautiful.

*snork* @ the WILD and CRRRRRRRRAAAAZY guys!!!
Posted by: Siouxie | May 16, 2008 at 09:24 AM
awwwww. The only thing I have in my backyard is a bullfrog the size of a Rottweiler.
Posted by: fivver | May 16, 2008 at 09:26 AM
Pogo -- Thanks for the reassurance. We're careful to watch the foxes from inside the house.

They may be cute, but stay away from them **SEE TABLE 4**

I've heard that the reason we have foxes in S. Fl. is because the Biltmore Hotel releases them back in the day when the current day golf course was actually the hotel's hunting grounds. Interesting, even if it turns out to be a lie!
Posted by: pocketcathy | May 16, 2008 at 09:35 AM
pocketcathy -- That's also what we heard.
Posted by: Dave | May 16, 2008 at 09:42 AM
I'd be afraid there was a Daddy fox around. When I lived in the Gables we saw them all the time too.

Mahatma --
Does Table 4 have seating for 20?

Some knucklehead has been feeding the squirrels that live in my yard, so now they come right up to us when we are eating at our picnic table. I keep chasing the nasty little rodents away, trying to make them afraid of people the way they shoud be.

Too extreme? We report; you decide.
Posted by: Fox News | May 16, 2008 at 10:29 AM
A little fast googling indicates the Biltmore foxes were probably the larger, Northern Red fox, and not the smaller South Florida Gray fox.
Posted by: pogo | May 16, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Awww, how freaking cute.

Those foxes look like a cross between a cat and a fox (pardon the cross) terrier....

Here in CO there was a family living under someone else's deck. You could totally tell when the mama fox was on kit duty because she was all nervous and paying attention, whereas when the daddy fox was on kit duty, he just sat there and sort of watched.
Coincidence? Or maybe the divine order of things?

So cute! We have red foxes up here in NE; they are beautiful. :)
Posted by: Guin | May 16, 2008 at 05:54 PM
They are cute up here in NE but they are also frequent carriers of rabies. One attacked my dog while the family was outside last year. Fortunately my dog was ok and he killed the fox.
