WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN ARTIST
The ability to convince people that your random neural firings make sense.
Key Mystery Quote: The spot in Napoleon Gardens has long been a venue for contemporary sculpture, ever since an older piece by noted artist, typographer and deviant Eric Gill was removed due to ageing.

FIRST to wonder if he got a NEA grant for that
piece of shitartwork.Posted by: Layzeeboy | February 06, 2008 at 01:36 PM
A piece of art that includes an oil drum and indicates a woman 'possibly one past her prime' - SNORK!

Layzee - does the U.K have an NEA, too?
Posted by: MOTW | February 06, 2008 at 01:44 PM
I'd be pretty pissed off if that was supposed to be me.
What a piece of trash!

Please! The artist's sanity is well intact for sure. It's the sanity of the people willing to pay $2000 for that $h!t that needs to be called into question. I admire that artists persuasive talents!

My favorite Dave expression...
-Random Neural Firings-
which I'm sure in the past, someone has pointed out WBAGNFARB

MOTW - Yes, it's called the Arts Capital Programme, but I didn't think "an ACP grant" would have resonated with a mostly US crowd as humourous

wait just a minute, no where in my job description does it say that i need the ability to convince people that my random neural firings make sense.

pssssssst, chuck?? that was judi, not Dave.
cg, at least we're not trying to make sense out of CJ's random neural firings.

WL that would be more like $4000. My dog has produced more aesthetically pleasing sculpture in the yard.

That guy got paid the equivalent of US$3,922.00 for a sculpture that no doubt set him back the cost of a few tarps and some duct tape. He picked up the oil drum at a junk yard for next to nothing, and probably got the cardboard boxes from the rubbish bins behind stores. Maybe $50.00 or so.
I agree with Wench Lizzy - there's something to be said for a man who can convince another man to give you more than a 1,000% increase for a big pile of garbage. Or maybe it's more likely that there's something to be said about the man who's willing to pay that increase.

I think I'm going to give this a try. I'm going to assemble a big wad of garbage and then sell it as art, saying I was inspired by Britney Spears' music career.

I am so in the wrong line of work.
Anyone over in the EU want to put me up for a few days while I
squeeze outbrilliantly assemble my first sculpture?Posted by: Circuit7 | February 06, 2008 at 02:32 PM
If Art's in the park, where's Paul?

He's renting it out to Talfa as her love nest. Nobody's looked inside.

To clear up the Mystery Quote, here is a relevant excerpt from Eric Gill's Wikipedia page:
Whilst Gill was a deeply religious man, largely following the Roman Catholic faith, his beliefs and practices were by no means orthodox. His personal diaries describe his sexual activity in great detail including the fact that Gill sexually abused his own children, had an incestuous relationship with his sister and performed sexual acts on his dog. This aspect of Gill's life was little known until publication of the 1989 biography by Fiona MacCarthy. Robert Speaight's earlier biography mentioned none of it.
