Scott - why is it called witch fire?
Posted by: DeskDiva | October 25, 2007 at 01:27 AM
Its on Witch Creek. So they are calling it the Witch Fire.
Posted by: Alfred Simon Fyodorovich | October 25, 2007 at 01:32 AM
Because it can go any "witch" way Diva. *sorry, I know these are serious times but you have to laugh sooner or later or your brain will fry...trust me on this one lately*

And I am in complete compassion for So Cal right now. We had to run from Hurricane Rita right after Katrina had hit 2 weeks earlier. Everyone panicked, even the older types that sat through a number of gulf storms. It was the biggest mess traffic wise in the history of Texas mass transit. Well, out side of driving in Dallas at rush hour.
Posted by: Doc Rick | October 25, 2007 at 01:36 AM
Ah, OK. I get it. I like the name, actually.
Well, Alfred, it looks like it's just us again, unless Scott comes back. What's the topic of the night?
Posted by: DeskDiva | October 25, 2007 at 01:36 AM
Ah, Rick - you're still around. Maybe tonight you get to pick the topic.
(*snicker* @ "any witch way")
Posted by: DeskDiva | October 25, 2007 at 01:37 AM
We lost more lives just evacuating and the silly thing went into Beaumont causing no major property damage in the greater Houston area.
Posted by: Doc Rick | October 25, 2007 at 01:39 AM
Which fire? *snork* I crack myself up sometimes. NOT.
Originally it was called the Witch Creek Fire because it started near Witch Creek. I don't know when it got shortened to Witch Fire.
Posted by: ScottMGS | October 25, 2007 at 01:40 AM
Well, Scott - you crack me up. :)

DDD:
You know, having been shot and wounded, as a police officer, I came to appreciate how heroin addicts come to be what they are, at least in part. I was in the hospital for about two weeks...they were giving me morphine for the pain. About a week into the program, I told the staff I was not going to accept any more morphine. They asked me why. I told them...I was looking forward to the injections waaaaay to much, and in my mind, that was just not a good thing.
End result...I probably experienced a bit more pain that I should have....but I felt a hell of a lot better for myself...

Wow, Afkat™. That's extremely impressive. Everyone should have such self-awareness.
Posted by: DeskDiva | October 25, 2007 at 01:48 AM
Well I woke up. Need to mark a map for Geography tomorow. How is everyone else?
Posted by: Alfred Simon Fyodorovich | October 25, 2007 at 02:31 AM

Got to find Java.
I know about It's tigers-presumed extinct-, but I don't really remember where it is.

You just *know* he's going to sue the cleaners for making him lose his job, too.

There's a wiki page on the fires:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_wildfires_of_October_2007
Regarding the Witch Fire, one of the blogsites I was following made mention of it connecting up with the Poomacha fire a couple days ago, and they started called it "Witchy-Poo." It was a much needed laugh.
Which bloglits are in the fire zone and where are you?
Thankfully, I am well-clear of the area and watching closely because of family and friends who are caught up in the situation.
Posted by: DavCat | October 25, 2007 at 02:53 AM
I think its really annoying how people are saying the fire is in California. The state could easily cover Japan. When Japan has a fire, they name Cities.
Posted by: Alfred Simon Fyodorovich | October 25, 2007 at 03:03 AM
There seems to be fires raging around in many parts of America. witch fire, slide fire, social fire cal fire, etc. etc are what people are searching mostly these days on the net.

Morning!
*sticks out tongue @ the sleeping ddd and Med*
I was once on what I called a 5-day Soma Holiday (Brave New World reference), which was about as out of it as I ever care to be. Then I was discharged and sent home with Tylenol #3. My point may be, switch someone over to unleaded while they're still admitted, or send them home with some Soma and the unleaded to transition with, but don't cut them down and boot them out at the same time.
ASF: north-central Indonesia.

ASF;CJ-Java is closer for me.
I've already had several cups. Didn't have to to go to North-Central Indonesia.

Quick post before I'm off to school. Hugs and prayers to all in SoCal. CJ-When I was in the hospital I was getting fentoynl (sp?)and Percs. The only reason I'm not an addict is because those drugs didn't work well enough against the pain, and they couldn't give me anything else. Before I was released, they were giving me Percs every 4 hours with an ibuprofen chaser in between. And my doctor wasn't going to give me any prescription drugs to take home. Luckily, the nurse intervened and got me a scrip for Tylox to take home (that's basically Percs). Like you said, you just can't cut someone off of painkillers abruptly. I was able to wean myself off of them over the next week. Pain sucks. Don't want to do that again.
The blog is blocked at school, so I'll hopefully be back for a few minutes later tonight.
Bye!

Happy St. Crispin's Day!
Posted by: The Dread Pirate Chris | October 25, 2007 at 07:21 AM
Soma, the breakfast of champions! Thanks for reminding me CJ, I need to call in a refill. 3 times a day, everyday. good for what ails me and makes my boss seem a lot less annoying.
Posted by: wickedwitch | October 25, 2007 at 07:30 AM
ooook! Happy one back, Chris~
*SMACKS* Rick for boooing the Sox!
Wyo - I'm sure our friendship can withstand a few baseball games ;-P (as long as the Sox win)

Good morning to you, too, you early birds.
(dives into cup of coffee...wonders what Soma is)
Posted by: daisymae | October 25, 2007 at 08:49 AM
daisy, just a muscle relaxant, nothing hallucinogenic.
Posted by: wickedwitch | October 25, 2007 at 08:55 AM
ww- but don't forget highly addictive, especially in the right person.
OK- I'm up an about (didn't say "awake" for good reason- still tired from the weekend). Nothing a triple venti soy latte with a shot of vanilla won't cure. And I used to make fun of people who pay for and drink $5 cups of coffee, and now I am one of them. Actually, come to think of it, I still do.
Posted by: diverdowndoc | October 25, 2007 at 09:26 AM
ddd - was not aware of that. unfortunately so are all the rest of my prescriptions. it either works and is addictive or it doesn't work, but is totally safe.
Posted by: wickedwitch | October 25, 2007 at 09:34 AM
ddd!! mornin' GF!! (email me your address so I can ship those books to ya!)

DavCat - good morning - regarding bloglits near the fire zones - Eleanor and ScottMG are closest. Today I'm sitting at a non-smoking table, but that may be temporary. I'm sure bbescuela got smoky, but no fire out his way that I'm aware of.
There may be others. And of course blurkers may be impacted. No wind at the moment. Our fires have 'laid down' but just a bit of wind and that could change.
Yesterday morning I sat bolt upright thinking I heard a helicopter (water dumping). It was the yard sprinklers coming on.
As for what they name fires, usually by location, as in Witch Creek Fire. Alfred, they can't name them by city because they don't predict which city they're headed for, so sorry about that. And frankly, since firemen name the fires, they can call them whatever the he!! they want - just put them out, please. :)
Now excuse me while I put some fresh water and feed out for the extended family of wildlife visiting my yard. Hopefully temporarily.

AWbh-thanks for remembering the other folks that inhabit your area. people often forget the toll on wildlife and pets.

zips in*™
Yes, Annie is right. Scott and I are in San Diego, and it's been a pretty frightening week - so far. But the TV stations are starting to show commercials between fire news reports, so I think that's a good sign.
Scott, I saw Larry Himmel too. How awful. For everyone else, he's a very popular TV person here.
I heard local rumors that the Chargers could be playing in the Rose Bowl or the Colliseum, but I think that's just wishful thinking on the part of some SoCal sports reporters.
They cancelled San Diego State's game for Saturday.

Blurk check in:
We are in La Crescenta, CA, in the foothills of Angeles Crest. When you watch the Rose Bowl Game, we are in those foothills that the camera pans. We, much like the rest of the county, are pretty smoky and soot filled. We are nearer the Santa Clarita area fires, and we are getting their smoke, plus what blows up from the Malibu fires. Thankfully, the winds have largely died down by us, with just an occasional breeze. The temp is not as high as predicted for us - we are at 88 degrees, down from the 93 they said we may have. The younger Dialtones are coming home from school to clean out closets to help those that lost all - also a sneaky way to get the bedrooms clean - but anyway, it's looking much better than I had hoped. All your good wishes, prayers and Karma are working - but if you don't mind, we'll need just a little bit more to get over the edge ! I can only speak for the Dialtones, but you got our thanks and appreciation !! You guys are the best !
