THE TIMES, THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'
In the Sixties, we had the civil-rights revolution. Today, we are saving Katonah, N.Y., from Martha Stewart.
(Thanks to Jeff Meyerson)
(And for the record, if Martha ever tries to trademark Armonk, there will be blood in the streets.)

Marty Stewart is still peeved about her nearly taking HIS name...and homemaking ideas.
Posted by: Annie Where-but-here | July 18, 2007 at 07:38 PM
I wouldn't ever have heard of the Katonah name if it wasn't for Martha Stewart. Nor would I have heard of that guy's protest song if it wasn't for her. Nuff said.
Posted by: Bethie | July 18, 2007 at 07:43 PM
If it means increased tourism, and thus better restaurants, Martha can move to Angleton and use our name any old which way she likes. I need good grub besides Mexican food now and then dangit!
Posted by: Doc Rick | July 18, 2007 at 07:44 PM
Heck, Sandusky would LOVE to have Martha use it's name for the free publicity. No one even acknowledges that town exists. Oh wait.....

Ma, ma, ma MY Katonah!

The lone resident of Bill, Wyoming says he'll sell the rights to use his town's name for little more than a six-pack of Bud.
that should make everybody happy, I'd think.

Of course, if Bill takes a step or two, he has new town limits. Very canny, that Bill....

I doubt Bill would take more than five steps at a time.

Yay, Wyo! More folks on the
wanted postersblogger's list!Own Katonah? Where the rich are starting a campaign
They’re not caving in, Martha just can’t win
She can’t have that town; they’re raisin’ Cain
Own Katona? Ev’ry night her neighbors gather ‘round
Sing their protest song—she’s done them wrong!
Makin’ plans to run her out of town.
They know they belong in this place
And they all think Stewart’s a disgrace
So when they say
Yeeow! Ayipeioeeay!
They’re only saying
We draw the line—Own Katonah?
Own Katonah? No way!
Posted by: Just Ducky | July 18, 2007 at 08:59 PM
Speaking as someone who grew up in Katonah: Meh. Martha's generally disliked in town, anyway. But I'm finding it awfully hard to care about this debate.
(On the other hand, Katonah was also the site of the girls who were suspended for saying the word "vagina" during one of the vagina monologues at an open mic night... so, yeah. People there are crazy.)

the song lyric that popped in my head was "we love you Conrad..." from Bye Bye Birdie. that martha makes everybody sing!

I was reminded of Broadway, but went Tennessee Williams. You know, "Katonahot Tin Roof."

Well, nora, Martha was a jailbird...guess songs just come to mind!

"Nobody Owns Katonah"
At $912,000/house who could afford to?
Thanks Wyo, but you were supposed to touch up the picture. You know, photoshop Tom Selleck's image in there. Course he would look funny under a saddle.

Wyo,
What about Jay Em. Can't be more than 1 or 2 people there either.

Water closets, janitor's closets... I was close.

Actually the town (using the term loosely)closest to where I live is Angora, Nebraska; pop. 2. I'm sure the mayor would be willing to talk turkey about selling the naming rights.

OK, those Blogographies were interesting to read. I know Mot has different time zone issues, so I'll just post this as a note of inquiry regarding what (to me) is a fun physics/electronics/navy idea. I mess around with old electronics, but this goes back to the more basic armature/field stuff and there just isn't that much I have been able to find on the net that is good at explaining basic motor theory, as opposed to describing the existing ones. Fun, fun, fun. Ok, well, for some of us....

We go past Jay Em when we take the back way to Belle Fourche. It's a beautiful drive north of Lusk. Lots of prairie goats out there.
Posted by: pete | July 18, 2007 at 10:57 PM
pete, isn't "lusk" an Indian word for "dreadful"? or was it "boring"?
Posted by: Wyo Cowboy | July 18, 2007 at 11:01 PM
I always thought they misspelled "lust." You know," I thought I was in Love, but it turned out it was just Lusk.
Posted by: pete | July 18, 2007 at 11:03 PM
As you have probably gathered, my daughter and her husband are in Belle Fourche, SD. Angela loves the Hills. She graduated from Black Hills State in Spearfish, and I doubt they will ever leave. She is really into rock climbing.
If you go to http://www.myspace.com/willbrand55 she is on my "friends" list. She has posted some of her climbing pics from Moab and other places. She has climbed Devil's Tower a number of times.
Scares the heck out of me, especially the ice-climbing.
Posted by: pete | July 18, 2007 at 11:08 PM
Does she do downhill skating?
Posted by: CJrun | July 18, 2007 at 11:14 PM
alas, Ang is a smart girl, and has set her profile to "private". the pix are not viewable unless she likes/knows you.
Posted by: Wyo Cowboy | July 18, 2007 at 11:18 PM
No, and I would be afraid to mention it to her cause she'd probably try it.
When she was two she would jump off the diving board at the pool. She's never had much fear.
Posted by: pete | July 18, 2007 at 11:21 PM
I didn't know that, Ken. Let me work on it.
Posted by: pete | July 18, 2007 at 11:26 PM

Posted by: pete | July 18, 2007 at 11:33 PM
Hey! I've been to Jay Em ... lotsa peeple there ... must've been ... oh ... mebbe a dozen or so?
And whut about that little spot alongside the road west of Lusk? Keeline? Shawnee? Lost Springs? I think that sign says population is about four -- or less ... ( I don't have my "good" WY map handy to check out which one it might be)
Then there's Mud Butte, Sodak ... travel that road at nite ... lotsa miles with no yardlights NEwhere ...
In Nodak we've got Sims ... which is listed sum places as a suburb of Almont ... the Cowboy Poet Rod Nelson is the Mayor there ... and he claims population of Four ... when the kids are around home ... oh ... and Blabon ... I'm thinkin' that might be pop. 1 or 2 ...
Dang, I like them small towns ... & tnx Wyo fer puttin' more pix up ...
Pete ... one of these times we might even be goin' thru Belle Fourche about the same time ... we'll see ... OH, how about Nisland, just east of BF a bit? Perty small ... tho I think it might have 20 or 50 folks there ... they've got a bar ... AND a church ...

You remember the guy who played Fr. Guido Sarducci in the early days of Saturday Night Live?
He wrote a book (mostly pictures) about graduation in a ghost town called Shellville. The name came from the abandoned gas station with the Shell sign out front.
All the graduates were sheep.
The school song was:
" O Shellville, O Shellville,
O Shellville, O Shellville."
Posted by: pete | July 18, 2007 at 11:55 PM
That SOOO sounds like Father Guido! Geez. I haven't thought about him in AGES.

I guess there's a bunch of us who hail from shellville, population -69.

Dang! I hate being so far ahead of you guys time wise. Many thanks to Wyo for getting me added to the rogue's gallery. In retrospect, my bio seems long and verbose, I apologise, but that's just me. As far as Jazzzz's observation regarding my appearance is concerned, all I will say is that appearances can be deceptive, but I'll accept the compliment with unseemly haste.
CJ, could you please elaborate regarding the inquiry relating to electric motors, I may be able to get the rusty gears in my brain moving enough to remember some of the old theory.

Well, whether the average house price is nearly 1m or not, I'm with them. It smacks of identity theft, the idea that names can be owned. That sounds like 60s material to me.
Besides, what's next? Numbers? Could make math classes a bit difficult.
