Very interesting!

This surprises me! Why doesn’t it surprise them?
Based on this report, I think we should all give fast food restaurants the cold shoulder.
Posted by: Lisa Bisa Fo Fisa | February 14, 2006 at 09:01 AM
Ewwwwwww! At least she didn't drink it.
Posted by: Noob | February 14, 2006 at 09:01 AM
I almost posted the exact same thing, Lisa.
Posted by: «LabSpecimen» | February 14, 2006 at 09:02 AM
Perhaps this is the real reason that all those people got sick at the food court last night on 24.
Posted by: Andy | February 14, 2006 at 09:04 AM
Lab, I have rep for reading people's minds. (ref 24 thread)
Good morning all!
Posted by: Lisa Bisa Fo Fisa | February 14, 2006 at 09:05 AM
You want antibiotics with that combo? We'll supersize them for a quarter.
Posted by: Angela | February 14, 2006 at 09:07 AM
Lab-Plus "great minds" and all that.

Lisa - I'm kinda busy today, can you post a few snorkable comments for me? Thanks a lot.
Posted by: Blue Meanie | February 14, 2006 at 09:08 AM
Which information give new meaning (and support) to the old college joke I saw as a graffito in the dorm-wing john ...
Flush twice -- it's a long way to the cafeteria ...
Posted by: U.O | February 14, 2006 at 09:08 AM
Maybe she contaminated the ice samples by collecting the toilet water first!
{/wishful thinking}
All right, so WHY does the ice contain more bacteria? They didn't say WHY! Or did I read too fast?
Posted by: Tamara Rhymes With Camera | February 14, 2006 at 09:10 AM
It's hard work blue--but I'll give it my best for the team. (Don't know if I'll be able to reach your level of snorkworthiness, maybe just a snif.)
Posted by: Lisa Bisa Fo Fisa | February 14, 2006 at 09:10 AM
This would be obvious if she ordered a Kalifornia "Double Double" (Do the have the In n' Out chain in Fla?) , because we all know a flush beats two of a kind....
Posted by: PirateBoy | February 14, 2006 at 09:11 AM
I agree, and what kind of bacteria would be nice to know. I mean does ice have some special kind of good bacteria, like in yogurt? We need to know these things.

*snork!*

U.O - You're back. Now you can tell me who is monitoring this site besides us. Is it the F*I? The C*A? The ASPCA? The AMA? Who is it?
(ref a few threads ago, I don't remember which)

EWWWW. next project - testing the beer in bars to see how cold it actually is.
Posted by: queensbee | February 14, 2006 at 09:16 AM
As one who once worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry (okay, I was a dishwasher) the toilets get cleaned with disenfectant several times a day. The ice machine? Never.
Posted by: fivver | February 14, 2006 at 09:17 AM
Major *SNORK* at Pirate. And so early in the day!
Fla doesn't have In N Out Burgers that I'm aware of, just the usual BK and McD, etc.
Posted by: Lisa Bisa Fo Fisa | February 14, 2006 at 09:18 AM
Lisa - you're hired. *SNORK*
Posted by: Blue Meanie | February 14, 2006 at 09:18 AM
YAY-A *snork* from Tamara RWC. I'm smiling!
Posted by: Lisa Bisa Fo Fisa | February 14, 2006 at 09:20 AM
In the interest of full disclosure, the restaurants she visited were:
McIcepoos
Burger Kinky
Wendy's Ice Urinal
Arby's Big Vat of Icy Sewage
Hardees
Posted by: Christobol | February 14, 2006 at 09:22 AM
*sigh* Oh well. I've been eating restaurant ice for 21 years, and it hasn't killed me yet.
*crunches ice*

Lisa BfF -
It's not really who IS monitoring us ... it's just a question of paranoia about who MIGHT be monitoring His Daveness (and thereby, us) ... after all, Dave is a known Pulitzer holding member of the media ... and we all know whut that means ...
or ...
it could be Monitor Lizards, the Monitor and the Merrimac, Heart Rate Monitors, Hall Monitors, TV Monitors or just about any Monitor for checking up on stuff ... you have been alerted to this hazard ...
(Old Chevy Chase joke from SNL - The FBI and the CIA have announced they will merge into one agency. The new group will be known by the name I-C-A-F-I-B ... M-O-U-S-E ...)
Posted by: U.O | February 14, 2006 at 09:24 AM
Okay, Thanks for clearing that up U.O. *winks ostentaciously.* Now that I know, I'll just bar the front door and continue my usual blogging.
(But just in case I'll avoid disparaging comments about monitors.)

Yes, Lisa ---
Be vewy, vewy quiet ... we don't know who's out thewe ... or whut they'we hunting ... mewely sayin' ...

Bad as this is, I think it's a small price to pay for avoiding to learn how to cook. And there's that whole 'no dishes' aspect that's pretty sweet too.

"Hold the Coccoids,
Hold the Bacillus,
Healthy orders just don't thrill us,
All we ask is that you let us
Infect you our way!"
Oh, and they just arrested two local Dunkin Donuts employees for peeing in the drive-thru orders!

*loud applause for the young lady scientist*
Yes, there is hope for the future. I only wish I had been this smart when I was twelve.

bumble is sooo tough...gotta love that
Posted by: cebasham | February 14, 2006 at 10:53 AM
Punkin~ A kid at my local McDonald's peed in the pickle bin. No, I don't eat there. I eat at other McDonald's where I haven't heard horror stories and I don't remember the employees from high school.
Posted by: Bumble | February 14, 2006 at 10:53 AM
cebasham~ Hope you can take me. Simulpost! ;-)
Posted by: Bumble | February 14, 2006 at 10:54 AM
When I was a practicing CDA sometimes at a fast food place I'd see one of my clients working.
While I was glad they had a job, I never went back.
So I take your point, Bumble. :)

EWWWWWW
That is scary...
Posted by: Spacemom | February 14, 2006 at 11:25 AM
I'm guessing it's because they DO clean the toilets several times a day, and they seldom if ever clean the inside of the ice machine.
They did a similar test in offices, and found that the toilet seats in the rest rooms had by far fewer bacteria than the average keyboard or desk top--same reason: The bathrooms get cleaned with disinfectant at least once a day. Desk and keyboards much less often.

For a long time, I have razzed my son for ordering/pouring his drinks without ice. It now appears that he is wise beyond his years.
And please, no one tell him I said that! ;-)
Posted by: WriterDude | February 14, 2006 at 12:13 PM
I HEARD THAT!!!
Posted by: WriterDude's son | February 14, 2006 at 12:21 PM
This was done by a girl, right? I think the results would have been much different if she had used water from the men's room.
Posted by: Pumaman | February 14, 2006 at 01:18 PM
Yes, Pumaman, she would have been arrested for being in the men's room.

Anyone else notice this is a Middle School Student doing lab research in an actual lab. I find this pretty amazing.
Ice is handled IE people put there hands on it. Plus most ice is iced straight from certain resevoirs.
While toilet water is fairly fresh having just come from being cleaned. The alowance of some bacteria is because with out the bacteria the water could be poisonous. Straight H20 really should not be drunk.
Also the employees who make the ice didn't wahs there hands. And Ice just lets the bacteria sit there until needed again. Or far worse will give the perfect enviroment for the bacteria to grow. Wow my mind is just going through this.
But a middle schooler in a professional lab. Wow.

Here is another blog on this very subject.
I'm kind of glad I gave up fast food...
Posted by: Nancie | February 14, 2006 at 02:31 PM
No problem...whatever bacteria is in the ice will be instantly killed by whatever it is that they put in their soda syrup.
Posted by: Wavey | February 14, 2006 at 09:21 PM
Maybe this is why the Europeans don't put ice in their drinks?
