DJT!! I was just thinking that it's been awhile since we heard from you.
Here's to hoping my afternoon goes better than my morning. But I have to keep reminding myself that there are other people with MUCH WORSE to deal with. Mine are just some minor inconveniences that were strung out in a row this morning.
1. Remember I said I had a bird in the exhaust fan? Well, somehow, it escaped from there and I found it flying around the living room. Took awhile to convince it to fly outside. And as I had the door and patio door open, I was fervently praying no one joined him INSIDE. And it pooped twice.
2. That caused me to run late, and because of the construction of the new Busch Stadium, my exit was closed; so I had to take the exit on the north side of town which takes you through an iffy part of town. I passed some cops arresting a couple of guys and I just prayed that if they started throwing bullets around, they waited until I was past. Obviously, it all went well.
3. As I was getting in the elevator in the parking garage, the elevator car dropped 6 inches and I fell. My back is starting to let me know about that. We noticed that at each stop, it would move up and down as people got on. EEK.
4. I had a message waiting for me from my future landlord (who is also an acquaintance. She was the high school best friend of one of my best friends.) She had told me Saturday that I had the choice between the two sides of the duplex and to let her know on the 29th. She called today to tell me she's had a lot of activity and if I could please let her know sooner, and she rented out one side. It happened to be the side I wanted. She thought I wanted the other side because it had a drier basement. I told her I didn't because of the kitchen. But, all will be OK because she said they would get me new cabinets, countertops and stove. In fact, she asked me if I'd like to go shopping with her when she gets back from St. THomas. The couple renting the other side wanted that one because she is handicapped and it works better for her. It's probably all for the best. So that little aggravation should actually be removed from the "con" column for today and put into the "pro" column.
OK, I've spent too much time here already. Gotta get back to work.

Mr. Fishair:
In your case I'll make an exception -
Waiter, I will have the sauce with the fish, thank you very much!

Thanks Djt. I've tried to google it too, and got nothing.
Could it be that Harley Guy is trying to get my goat?
What happens if I haven't a goat to be gotten, will he take something of equal or lesser value in its place?

I'm caught up... but somehow still totally lost.
I had so much to say but I didn't take proper notes because I was worrying about my email. Turns out that my aunt (Dad's youngest sister) sent me some photo's that she promised. Only she sent about 8 photos in 1 email, and it took about 20 mins to download. I haven't looked at them yet. I tried, but I could only see the upper lefthand corner of the picture. Gonna try fiddle them some after work, looking for a way to view them without scrolling. Both her and her husband have won photography awards so it should be worth it. Her husband had a photo included in a book of "photos of Australia" that was published to coincide with the new millenium.
Meanwhile.. best of luck Tamara!! You'll do great, and come back here with a new title, salary package and a million dollar smile!
a little LTTG but I don't read FOTM books much these days. I take recommendations from people who know my tastes, stuff that intrigues me at the bookshop, and browsing through the "New Titles" section at the library website. I've had some unexpected treasures from that last source... the occasional disappointment as well, but at least it only costs me the price of a book reservation. ($1.50). That's far cheaper than buying it and finding out you hate it. I never read any Oprah books unless I had plans to read them anyway. I did look at a couple of her selections in the library, and decided they were too depressing. A close friend of my was given an OBC book for her birthday by her brother. It was about a depressed HIV positive black woman. The only good thing about the book was that my friend was pregnant at the time and they were having trouble finding a name for their imminent arrival. Their youngest daughter is named after the main character's daughter. So that was good...
I've never read HP... any of them, and I have no plan to. That sort of thing doesn't interest me anyway, and I don't want to read it just to say that I've read it. They started advertising the next HP book just before Christmas. It's due out in July. That's just sad.
I used to be a BIG Grisham fan, but I find that he seems to be writing a lot of books just to turn into movies. I haven't read anything of his for a couple of years now. I loved A Time To Kill as well. I cried.. a lot. I thought it was the one book of his they'd never turn into a movie. It was soooo graphic. They just intimated the graphic bits and made the movie, because there's a law somewhere that says that all JG books MUST be turned into movies. Or else.
Mr F... since no one else has responded, Dave posted a thread a while back (last year) because someone sent him a letter saying they read his books in the toilet. Turns out a lot of DB's fans do the same thing, myself included (is that TMI?)

Seems I still managed to say a lot... btw.. in the runup to TLAPD, I did post on that thread.. I was Slashin' Calla Bellamy, in case you missed me. Speaking of red letter days...
Happy St Patrick's Day!! Break out the green Moataritas... and if the the Killer Coffee looks greenish.. DON'T DRINK IT!!! I haven't added green to it.. it's gone off! Make some more.. and leave some for me... gotta ruuuuuuun!!

I couldn't find a 'car bomb martini' but did find this:
Bacardi Bomb Pop Martini
1 oz Bacardi Razz
1 oz Blue Curacao
1oz Sour Mix
Splash of Sprite
Served in Martini Glass

No fair that Kaf gets St. Patty's day early.
Only 24 more hours until I can crack the Guinness! And since it is St. Patty's day, please tell me that the Car Bombs referred to earlier were of the Irish variety!
Irish Car Bomb:
1/2 Pint glass of Guinness
1 shot glass (1/2 Jameson's, 1/2 Bailey's)
Drop shot into glass, chug.
Also, tradition in the B household is to get a bunch of people together, drink lots and lots of Guinness and watch "Boondock Saints"
My, my, my. Been so long since I posted here. Work has been kicking my butt and the weekends haven't been much better. We got TCMB a new car a couple weeks ago, so no more car shopping. TLBB is getting to be quite the little charmer. He'll be 14 weeks on Saturday and he's already rolling over from back to front and when you hold him up in a standing position (which doesn't take much holding the strong little bugger) he tries to physically take steps. This can't bode well.
DJT and Fish,
My wife loves the Beauty series. We actually use the books during.....nevermind.

Blue Curacao?
*shudders*
Every good Professional Alcohol Consumer knows what booze does their body no good. Mine are all the boys: Jim, Jack, Jose and Johnny...recently I was able to add Blue Curacao to that list.

Did I hear saucy Fish is on the menu today?
Perhaps served with a Little Penguin Merlot, which is a current fav wine.
Insom, I am a big fan of Neal Stephenson. I've read everything he's written. Cryptonomicon was good, and I really liked Diamond Age.
Read the first Beauty book. Still not sure what I think of it. Haven't forgotten it, so I guess that says something...
DJT - nice to hear from you again. Thanks for posting that Biryani recipe. Yummy!

We always "observe" St.Patrick's Day, but I've got Feckin class tomorrow night until 10:30. Damn it.
Oh and THANKS WOLFIE of the Shadows!! (I should've known, coming from someone who works in one of those buildings with tons and tons of ink stained pages binded and shelved and readily checked out by the public, yep right up your um, alley)
Joshkr- Maybe we should have a St.Patty's day / "Patriotic Anti-Terrorism" party on the Blog tomorrow. Whadaya think?

WARNING: LONG LTTG POST AHEAD

Bangi - What about me?!?!?!
Deon - Heh... woulda helped if I had actually received the book yesterday. As it was, I was forced by the eeeevil bosslady to put off catching up until now... (this am) *sigh*. Baby is percolating just peachy. Looks like we're going to schedule her for mid May. I have roughly two more months of looking like a
house before I finally get my figure back! wooo HOOOO!
*doin' the happy happy I get my figure back dance*
Speaking of House... anybody watch that??? I discovered last night that I have a huge crush on Hugh Laurie.
Whats on Just's Nightstand:
-Wolves of the Calla - I finally got the hubby to concede and let me buy it, but I have to wait til may for the last two *sob*
-The Essential C-Section Guide - Everything you didn't know you wanted to know about C-Sections 'cuz this time I wanted to be an informed patient...
-10,000 Baby Names - Self explanatory,
although we are on hiatus (its catching) from
thinking about names... I figure if the kid has
a name before she's cut outta me she's doin better than baby #1 who was almost named choice a but got named choice b the day after she was born...
-Random Pile of Decorating Magazines
Re: #10 ... my response??? WHY on EARTH would someone make a website about that ... (not gonna mention that after initial disgust I couldn't make myself leave and read every page. Nope. Cuz that didn't happen!)
El: Don't feel bad... I got Shay a new CD burner for fathers day last year, so we got all excited at the prospect of all the MP3 CDs we could make (yes, we have no life!) ... it seems that all the songs we recorded from CDs or umm ... were "given" from various places on the internet burned fine. All the songs we paid for from iTunes??? Not so much. Every single frickin' song from there told us we didn't hold the liscense for it, that we couldn't burn it... *pout*. Of course, I found this out after I bought a bunch of songs with the specific intent of making a CD outta em....
My point? Computers suck and I think we need to go back to the days of carrier pigeons... or perhaps using slate tablets... either way would be easier. :)
Tamara - (I too can't write your name w/o thinking "rhymes with Camera" ...) loved "Prayer for Owen MEany" ... The hubby and I are both big Irving Fans... The kid book sounds interesting - who is it by???
Oh yeah - LOOVE DORKGASM ... :)
*is wondering what kind
of Paint Bangi is using on Deon*
Mad - I loved those two... you should tell me your thoughts on it when you finish... if you liked it or not.Of Course, I have yet to read a Stephen King book I hated. Other than Thinner. Which was Stoooopid.
*is curious about Deon's censored comment of March 16, 2005 03:38 AM*
*tries not to be too curious*
*must ... act... cool*
*fails miserably*
DEON!!!! What were ya gonna say??? Come on... tell us!!!!!
Marie - *tentatively standing up* My name is Just and I'm addicted to Harry Potter. Its all my husbands fault. I swear! Actually, HE blames his mother, but I'll get into that in a second...
Anyhow, I always avoid those fad-type books like the plague, and when we started dating I saw he had the whole series. I, of course, made fun of him.
Imagine! A 30 yr old man with the complete Harry Potter series... So he told me his mom (who DOES read all the fad books... she's a teacher. go figure.) dared him to read the first one by saying (and this is how he hooked ME) "You should read them! They are just as good, if not better, than The Chronicles of Narnia !!".
NOTHING could be better than the CON. So he read the first one, as per her dare, and got hooked.
He challenged me to the same - if I could read the first Harry Potter book and not be hooked, then I would be given free rein to make fun of him about it...
3 years later and I've already reserved my copy of Half-Blood Prince
... my point? I agree with ya'll about not jumping on the band wagon for all these
(as Graz put it) "Flavor-of-the-Month Books" , but I can see why
they are sooo popular, and they really ARE enjoyable! I highly reccommend them. :)
Leetie - Didn't ya love Insomnia ??? (Wait - you DID didn't
you?!?!?) Thats the one that got me BACK into King... I boycotted the whole Dark Tower series at first, but finally The Husband had the first book and there was a time when it was the only book in our house I hadn't read... so I read it
and now I'm hooked... After I'm done with the last two I want to go back and read all the others again so I actually GET the tie-ins....
Re: Oprah's Book Club - I never follow it, so I couldn't tell you my opinions of any of them... there have been a couple times though that I've heard someone mention that O just featured such-and-such book for her book club, and it WAS one I had read and liked... so I know I at least PARTLY agree with her...
*going to google her book club and see whats on there*
El - So could we say that wysi Kvells in his Gursting abilities?!?!?
*curious* *hoping she got it correct* *biting fingernails*
Fish - I've always been amazed at The Husbands ability to do that... loose feeling in his legs while in the WC. Can't ya tell that its happening before it happens????
Its even funnier when I go in there later and realize that it was my Cosmopolitan
that CAUSED the whole numbness issue... ;)
El - I couldn't link to your "Bummer" link! *POUT*
**NOTE TO SELF: Must read Beauty series...**
*taking a big breathe*
I'm FINALLY caught up!!! To "March 16, 2005 02:48 PM" at least....
*hitting Post*

Marie, Leetie et. al.
The Joyce Carol Oates ("The Thinking Man's Cereal") was about a happy family that falls apart after Something Bad happens and reconstitutes itself. It is very detailed, for example, you will know all the Mulvaneys pets by the time you are finished.
I've only skimmed her "Blonde" (marilyn monroe book) I probably would have found it more interesting, but it is an all-female book club(and me).
I would recommend Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" to anyone interested in computers, codes, or World War II. It's long and some parts are technical, but you can skip over them (I did.) The characters in it are descendants of those in the 'Baroque Trilogy' though they are independent books. (The trilogy aren't independent of each other, though.)
Rita - I've read part of "Snow Crash" but not "Diamond Age", the local Borders had all of them for sale, but I didn't pick up on them.
I read ,and enjoyed, on their own level, the Dan Brown books, but people who think that 'DaVinci Code' is in any way, shape, or form , a reflection of history, are seriously deluded. More than 20 years ago, I read one of the books Brown quotes as a 'reference' ("Holy Blood, Holy Grail" by Baigent,Leigh, and Lincoln) and thinking that that book was nuts.
In my Honors Calculus class last term, several had read 'DaVinci' but in this term's Discrete Math class I was talking about the Fibonacci sequence and no one admitted reading it.

MOATIES! I LOVE YOU! Turkey sandwiches all around!!
Whew. Just got back from lunch. I don't know how, but I managed to calm down before we left the office, and it went smoothly.
No finalization on the raise, but it's definitely coming.
I need a nap. Or a coma.
Have I mentioned how much I love you guys?? *getting all teary-eyed*

..don't worry.. short post ahead..
Just - if you like Hugh Laurie, he has written a book, called 'The Gun Seller' which is a thriller.
*is jealous of all these British actors who also write, the benefits of an Oxbridge education, no doubt*
Posted by: insomniac | March 16, 2005 at 10:56 AM
I don't know if I'm still banned. I'll try a short one and if it goes through I'll do another.
As I was getting in the elevator in the parking garage, the elevator car dropped 6 inches and I fell. My back is starting to let me know about that. We noticed that at each stop, it would move up and down as people got on. EEK.
Ouch, Sly, that hurts. And it made me flash on the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13-story drop! At least we were semi-prepared in that we knew it was coming, if not when. But then, it didn't really help.

Jeff, maybe you are being rationed. You are allowed ten minutes of posting every three hours, or something like that. So you aren't really being blocked; it's only a partial blockage.
Posted by: neophyte | March 16, 2005 at 11:18 AM
Insom- I'll have to check it out! I just realized last night that he played the father on Stuart Little (1 & 2) ... I've been wracking my brain the past 3 weeks trying to figure out where I've seen him... if the book is any good, it might blow my crush into a full blown infatuation. :) I LOVE Talented me... *sigh*
So have you read it???
*going back to alibris to add to book order*
Posted by: Just | March 16, 2005 at 11:24 AM
"Partial Blockage" just sounds dirty.
Or maybe its just me.
*going back to daydreaming about Hugh Laurie*
*wishing she had read the Beauty trilogy right about now*
*sigh*

El - So could we say that wysi Kvells in his Gursting abilities?!?!?
Just - That is exactly 100% correct!!
The NY Times is a great site and very easy to register on, but, if you don't want to...
(insert guilt trip here) - then I guess I can live with that!
Posted by: Eleanor | March 16, 2005 at 11:26 AM
So I'm back for now. Good.
I LOVE book talk, so keep it up. I've read a lot of King but not The Dark Tower series. The rost by far was Cujo, which I detested. I also hated the movie. My favorite was (again, by far) The Stand, as I've always loved those kind of end-of-the-world with a few survivors stories. In fact, as a kid I used to have dreams about being one of the few survivors myself. (Make of that what you will.) I read the book when it first came out and then read the longer, uncut version when it was released. So far I've read 33 of his books, 30 fiction (including 7 short story collections).
Grisham: I read a few of his early ones, of which the best by far was A Time to Kill. Did anyone else see the great "my Grisham" scene in Third Rock From the Sun? Tommy is reading a Grisham and finds he's picked up one of the other aliens' book. He says something like "my Grisham is about a young Southern lawyer fighting the system." Dick: "MY Grisham is about a young Southern lawyer fighting the system." "So's mine!" They eventually all exchange books. Very funny and very true.
Harry Potter: yes, I've read them all and will continue to do so.
What is this Beauty series and what am I missing?
Hugh Laurie is excellent and House, however implausible, is well worth watching. He has played serious before. Remember Peter's Friends? Of course he also played Bertie Wooster and Blackadder's foil.
I can't read much Joyce Carol Oates but have read a number of her short stories.
Welcome back, djtony & Just. And way to go Tamara!
My books to be read shlef is always full. At the moment I have a load of library books by Karin Slaughter, Henning Mankell (Sweidish mystery writer), Nora Roberts (Jackie has been nagging me to read Northern Lights), George V. Higgins (aofrementioned short stories), Jim Fusilli, Earl Emerson, Claire Matturro, Tom Corcoran, Jill McGown, William Tapply & Philip R. Craig (jointly written using both of their detectives), James Swain and Jodi Compton.
As you see, mostly mysteries.
I also have (my paperbacks) books by Aimee & David Thurlo (first in series about a Navaho vampire), Owen Parry (Civil War mysteries; excellent series), Peter Robinson (non series mystery that was never published in the U.S. until now; I got this British pb at a convention and had him sign it but still haven't read it), Dave Barry & Ridley Pearson (hardback, still unread!), Jimmy Buffett (ditto), George Orwell (third book of his collected essays & journalism), Val McDermid, Stephen King (Hearts in Atlantis), Steve Brewer and many many more.
Oh well, better go back to getting ready to have our taxes done on Friday. I'm afraid we made too much money and are going to have to give some back this year. Will see.

"rost by far"? What's that? "worst"

I read the first 3 chapters of Peter and the Starcatchers when DB posted that thread - and loved it - I know some people here have read the whole book -
I was thinking of giving it to Cute Guy's son for his 12th birthday (son's b-day, that is - *snork*) - Is that the right age???? Or for his 11 year old twin girls?
Yes, he was very busy when he was married! But he has full custody, and they're terrific kids!
Opinions???

PS Neo ... dija see my answer up there *pointing up* about the due date? It looks like shes gonna be scheduled to come out between May 18-28. Just have to see when my OB has hospital duty and work things out as far as who can take off work when.... *sigh*
Havin' a kid is too hard... its not enough I have to worry about the whole "process", but also who has vacation time, who can take off work, and WHEN everyone can manage to be in town in order to actually HAVE the dang thing....
:)

Just - when you have your baby all the Moaties will kvell!
Posted by: Eleanor | March 16, 2005 at 11:52 AM
correction: dija = didja
Jeff - Thanks. :) And Hearts in Atlantis is excellent ... the movie totally sucked (and not in a good way), but I remember being blown away by the thought required to create the stories and how they are related. I remember liking Cujo and also being scared sh**less... but then again, I was in 7th grade when I read it, and when I turned off the lights in my room I had a direct view to the power strip on our computer that had two glowing red lights... I slept with the lights on. :)
I would highly reccommend The Dark Tower series... especially now that they're all out and theres no waiting between books... thats what I'm not good at...
General Moat Question: anyone ever thought of starting a MOAT book group??? kinda like blog watchers - we can take over a thread somewhere - so the Moat du jour doesn't get eaten up with all the book talk????
I love all the book talk, but look how long this thread has gotten already!
Just a thought....

Having to be productive always leaves me so far behind here.
I hope the ramparts are done toasting.
Tamara, I was going to say I hope the lunch goes well, but it looks like at this point it did. And I am glad I am not the only person who can be completely undone by people being nice. (and there are some wonderfully nice people here) The nose blowing, of course don't use the sweater. The shirt is of course better. ;)
Haven't read the Beauty books yet, but I think I need to do that. Hmmm. Have to go shopping this weekend.
Current read-(and I'm not making this up)DB's Greatest Hits. I have a new library book I need to get read before it's due back, but I keep leaving it in the car, forgetting to take it in the house.
I have read a few of the books on Oprah's list, but usually it is ones that caught my eye, not because they were on her list.

Leetie - I'm not saying it should stop! It was just an idea since I've seen some grumbling that we move a lot, and considering we've put over 500 comments on this thread in 3 days...
It seemed like a good idea to me.. sorry!

Hey wait! Let's not shoot any of our MOATmen off to Antarctica! I kind of like our guys; they aren't the same as the run-of-the-mill type you see in RL. Send some other guy off by rubber band instead! (I'll volunteer my husband.)

Neo - if we're using husbands, I'll just use my own. :) Unless you want to have a contest to see who flies farther????

Just, I think thats a fabulous idea! Can we use ex's also?

I hear you Just.
ABSOLUTE Worst part of my job: Warranty phone calls.
I get to call an owner of a auto repair shop and tell him some really great news. (not) He just bought a TWO THOUSAND dollar transmission from us, installed it, drove it, and then sent it back to us because he said there was something wrong with it and he wants us to repay him for the transmission, his labor, oil and freight. He wasn't real happy then. But, Come to find out, while Someone at his shop, either he or one of his mechanics, FU#!&ed it up while installing it and that's the reason it's not working properly, well unfortunately for him, this is not covered under our Warranty and now he gets to pay to have it fixed. These things never go well, because you know it's NEVER their fault. So, yeah, I'm about to hear someone get real mad and most likely mean.
I think I'm gonna need a XXXL Moatarita in a few.
Wish me luck?

I just read a few reviews of The Beauty trilogy on Amazon. Folks there are saying that it's about nothing but spanking and more spanking. Gosh, I was just hoping for some good old down-home smut! What's the deal, guys?
Posted by: Leetie | March 16, 2005 at 01:03 PM
SH#@* I just realized you said men. Hahaha, I thought it read :

sheesh, I better get that Moatarita to go.

Just! No worries! We all have different tastes for what we like to read about on the MOAT. Books and sex are 2 of my favorites!

Goodnight Just!
Good luck, Mr. Fishair!
*high fives Di and does a little happy simulpost dance*
Leetie, I agree, we need more good old-fashioned smut. What are people thinking? Where are their heads these days?
Posted by: neophyte | March 16, 2005 at 01:17 PM
*giggles at Leetie*
and toots.
*still giggling*
(read the books, there is smutch more going on than just spanking, but yes I'd say you will see your fair share of it.)
Read the first one Leetie, lest I have to call for a group spanking!

Thanks Neo.

Just, maybe if I had read the first Harry Potter book I would have got hooked! I didn't because a man (ex-boss) who was much older than me and a bit stalking me gave it to me as a present... yuk.
I remember when I watched the movie "Peter's friends" I had a bit of a crush on Hugh Laurie too!
As a teenager I was a big fan of Stephen King (Carrie, The Shining, Cujo...) then for many years I forgot about him, and recently I bought "Bag of Bones" and I liked it a lot, it's one of my favorite King books.
Has anyone read any Dave Eggers book? I had something like an epiphany when I read them!
*hopes the Moaties won't think she's hopelessly insane*

I was wondering, tomorrow, when we send the men flyin into the air, can we also use prospective male counterparts?
Harley Guy just phoned me to tell me he's lost. Ok.. so when I try to give him directions he says and I quote:
"Its okay, I've missed the exit like 8 times now, but I think I've got it figured out, I'll call you when I get lost again."
Does anyone else want to smack him besides me?
Just checking...

El - Peter and the star catchers is brilliant. I don't have any kids so I'm not sure but I think it would be fine for 11-12 year olds. I believe in the book store it was marked age 8 and up. As an adult it didn't feel like reading a childrens book. Just don't ask me to give up my signed copy!
As to Stephen King:
Leetie I actually liked the way he ended the series. The first ending not the second ending.
I think he had a period where he wrote some really bad stuff.
Tommy knockers, rose madder, geralds game, and deloris claiborne I thought were just rubbish. Insomnia, hearts in atlantis are great. For the red sox fans out there or those who want some King lite try the girl who loved tom gordon. Shinning scared the bejjezu out of me and I have to say that I still think Drawing of the Three in the DT series is the best of his books.
Jeff - read Eyes of the Dragon if you like it then go for the DT series. The first four are great classic King doing fantasy with a shot of horror thrown in. The last 3 are just down right weird and not like anything else. But in a good way. Anyhow I don't think anyone will accuse king or ripping of Tolkein.
Ok back to work

Good morning MOATies!
Wait, it's not morning--not even here! We went to the gym as usual this morning. While we were there an apt complex fire broke out on the road home. The road was closed so we were stuck downtown for hours. Finally got home--saw the place on the way home and it's a real mess--4 apts look destroyed. Nobody was seriously hurt, I've heard.
It seems I don't read the same books everyone else does. I thought some of you sci-fi types would be Sparrow fans but I guess not.
OK, how about this; His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman. First book is The Golden Compass. Ostensibly for children but very scary for kids, IMO. About an alternate world, a lot like our own, but not quite. Heroine is an 11 yr old girl named Lyra, who lives in Oxford--in her universe--not quite like the Oxford, England in our universe. I highly recommend this series. The first one: could...not...put...it...down...
The only Steven King book I've read (Rose Madder) is on Mad's list of trash, so maybe I should try him again. That one really did suck. Rocky just read his new book about the Red Sox and enjoyed it. Not a typical Steven King, obviously.
Don't like Grisham. Do like Turow. Da Vinci Code: OK but didn't absolutely love it.
Not to kvetch at you, Eleanor, but don't forget me in the Yiddish camp. In fact, I even have a How-To-Learn-Yiddish language record, although I haven't mastered it.
One Yiddish word I use all the time is schlep As in, I can't believe I have to schlep this big bag to the gym every morning!

I sent this in to Dave. I hope he posts it. It rocks!

Leetie - that is soooo cool! And it's so exciting for me that I can now watch all these video's!
sandy - actually I did think about you this morning - you are certainly a member of the "Yiddish Camp" which will also include any and all Moaties who wish to participate -
maybe Deon could keep a list of all the words and we could have a quiz every so often - Deon???
Mad - you have a signed copy of Peter and the Starcatchers and Weasel?!?!? You are one fabulous woman!!!
*zips out to look for more videos to watch*

*zips back in for a moment*
re: sandy's post:
kvetch = complain
That is all.
Carry on.
Posted by: Eleanor | March 16, 2005 at 03:17 PM
El, I would actually translate kvetch as bitch. (But as a verb only.) "Complain" seems polite, as in "She complained to her doctor about her cough." Whereas kvetch is more annoying, leading others to finally say "OK, OK, now quit your kvetching!"
Posted by: sandy beach | March 16, 2005 at 03:30 PM
Oy vay, sandy - you are right! I stand corrected - so stop kvetching! :)
Posted by: Eleanor | March 16, 2005 at 03:38 PM
Eleanor, do you think the MOAT is like a kibbutz?
Posted by: Leetie | March 16, 2005 at 03:41 PM
*wonders whether they drink MOATaritas constantly on a kibbutz*
Posted by: sandy beach | March 16, 2005 at 03:46 PM
Leetie - yes, in a lot of ways ou sense of family and our always pulling together when someone has a problem!
On the other hand however (lawyer in me) we don't all have rifles - at least that I know of!
And they may not drink Moataritas sandy, but they certainly drink something - it's pretty rough out there! Maybe Manichewitz wine!
Posted by: Eleanor | March 16, 2005 at 04:04 PM
El- I met weasel getting that book signed so it means a lot to me. Dave signed Weasel's book - To a Blog God. So I know I got a good man. Dave also signed my copy of G2G and my lab notebook. I didn't have a coconut bra to get signed like Rita. *sniff*
Sandy - you should defintely pick something else by King to read. Almost anything else is better than that book. Try some of his short stories. I can send you something if you find him lacking at your local library.
Posted by: Mad "about Weasel" Scientist | March 16, 2005 at 04:05 PM
hahaha, there is an article in the March 2005 Reader's Digest about Happiness, and one of the sub-paragraph headings is, "Enjoy Every Sandwich" And right after that article is one entitled, "The $100 Million Scam" about those Nigerian Scam Letters. Is there a MOATie who works for RD?

Seriously! Talk about LTTG...
Posted by: Marvin | Paranoid Android | March 16, 2005 at 04:12 PM
Thanks, Mad--I'm sure I have plenty of S. King sources around here. I actually listened to Rose Madder (unabridged) on audiotape back when I had a horrendous bus commute to work. It started out pretty well but then took some strange veer and ended up in weirdoland. Since King is famous for creepiness, I figured that was about par for the course. Now I'll try him again.

Re The Beauty Trilogy. In my opinion, it is DEFINITELY NOT for everyone.
I read the first one (the one the receptionist was reading, she left it on my chair AT WORK!); and a couple of years later, skimmed the other two at the behest of a guy I was dating.
Synopsis: spank spank spank, oh look ponies, spank spank spank, here kitty kitty kitty, spank spank, why are the guys going for each other and not Beauty? spank spank spank.
Leetie, you had said you were wanting good ol home grown smut, or something like that. In my opinion, Beauty is not it. It definitely wasn't for me. Too much spanking, and too much guy on guy action.
AND IT IS SOOOOOOOO NOT A BOOK TO READ AT WORK OR LEAVE ON SOMEONE'S CHAIR AT WORK!!!!
Posted by: slyeyes | March 16, 2005 at 04:28 PM
There are also small articles about a man offering his head on e-bay for ad-space
I read that as, the guy was offering head on e-bay in exchange for ad space.
OK, my mind is in the gutter. So what?

Posted by: sandy beach | March 16, 2005 at 05:26 PM
hello, how are you?
Posted by: Eleanor | March 16, 2005 at 05:30 PM
Was this a set-up?
Posted by: Eleanor | March 16, 2005 at 05:36 PM
Jeff, I was speedreading to catch up this afternoon and almost missed this: I've always loved those kind of end-of-the-world with a few survivors stories.
Me, too. I used to have On the Beach dreams, where eveyone was dead and I knew I would soon be dead, too. That movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
But my favorite book in that genre I would love to find again--I read it many years ago: Earth Abides. I don't remember the author's name, George something maybe. Did you read that one? Really great book.
Posted by: sandy beach | March 16, 2005 at 05:36 PM
El, sly started it. Who knows?
Alex--all I can say is the usual:
Ewww!
Posted by: sandy beach | March 16, 2005 at 05:38 PM
Ooooh - On The Beach - haunted me for years - the coke bottle hitting the - what did they call those machines - S.O.S. or something - and would Gregory Peck ever have sex with Ava Gardner - wow!

Remember the other day I was talking about an nutso aunt and uncle of mine?
Well, their names came up today in a conversation with my mom. A number of years ago, the dear soles passed on. Mom told me today she got a check from her aunt's estate. She told me a story of a fight over her estate among her nephews. I said "a fight over WHAT? That house"
Well, apparently, my uncle had a couple of brothers who did better in life than he; except that they passed on without children, and George got it. He did nothing with it other than stick it in several banks.
Mom was telling me a long story about a fight over the estate between two nephews; it had all kinds of intrigue, double dealing, threats of criminal charges. My aunt had a bunch of sisters, and her estate went to her nieces and nephews. By the end of the fighting, what was left to split up was a joke. A very sad joke.
Those two people had a difficult life, and had very little during most of it. Close to the end of their lives, they inherited a fortune. THeir needs were simple, they didn't need it and they put it in savings, where it grew even bigger. I think the only thing they bought was a car. They didn't even buy a house with a basement that my uncle so wanted. My aunt didn't even get a cleaning service.
And because of two greedy people, it's all gone.
Posted by: slyeyes | March 16, 2005 at 06:02 PM
*hits self over head for misspelling "souls"*
Posted by: slyeyes | March 16, 2005 at 06:05 PM
My parents always said it was a blessing they came from poor families: there was never any inheritance to fight over. And I've told my mom and dad that we expect them to spend every last cent of their money before they die; they owe us that much, so that there is nothing for this generation to fight over.
Posted by: neophyte | March 16, 2005 at 06:22 PM
Interesting story, sly.
My mom got an unexpected inheritance from her cousin. The cousin was mentally ill so her father, who was wealthy, wrote up a will to put the money in trust where his crazy (certifiably) daughter couldn't get at it.
So this woman had to rely on govt handouts and welfare type care for her illness. My mom always felt bad because her cousin was poor and mentally ill -- not a good combination in this country. Mom had no idea there was all this money just sitting there.
She found out when she got a big check after her cousin died. I don't know exactly how much it was, but it was a lot I think. Mom felt bad about that money--why should she have the use of it when her cousin didn't?

ATTN Humans:
A couple days ago, I received a pillow (one of those awesome really squishy ones) from an Aunt to belatedly celebrate the holiday that used to be held in honor of who's-it and now revolves around a fat who's-his-face, and it has a tag that is kind of annoying, but says, verbatim, "UNDER PENALTY OF LAW THIS TAG NOT TO BE REMOVED EXCEPT BY THE CONSUMER". Now, it's a rather large tag, approximately 2.5"x1.5", but as I am not planning on eating said pillow, am I still within my rights to remove said tag? If it comes down to leaving the tag on or eating the pillow, I'll just stick with the tag, thanks. And if it helps at all, it's a red pillow.
Sincerely,
Posted by: Marvin | Paranoid Android | March 16, 2005 at 06:25 PM
My brother-in-law told his RICH parents that he wanted them to spend their money before they went. Then he asked them if they could just spend his brother's share first.
Posted by: slyeyes | March 16, 2005 at 06:27 PM
Marvin, don't even think about removing the label. Just put the pillow down... now just back away slowly.
Posted by: sandy beach | March 16, 2005 at 06:29 PM
Why should Just put down the pillow?
And when did she get a pillow in the first place?
And I thought we were talking about MY pillow here! Oh well...
Wait! Just, keep your pillow, and I'll give my pillow to another MOATette, and you can have a slow motion pillow fight!
Posted by: Marvin | Paranoid Android | March 16, 2005 at 06:33 PM
Marvin, not everything is about you, ya know. Just deserves some attention. And pregnant ladies need lots of pillows so go easy on her.
Posted by: sandy beach | March 16, 2005 at 06:37 PM
Wow, am I observant today. I just drank a soda I was allergic to, and when I got one that didn't bother me, I tried to drink it without opening the can.
Back to the cold meds for me.
And since there's a pillow protection division, please retract my last statement regarding the tags. It was an exaggeration. Yeah, that's what I'll call it...
