I like the wording "(...)vampires occur(...)."
Okay, I'm really going now. I'm not playing around.

Eat your heart out, Vlad!

I think if we were talking about embalmed corpses here, the Romanian authorities would have much bigger problems on their hands than simple desecration of the dead. Like, mass self-poisonings from swallowing formaldehyde.
Though if you hear of crazy-in-love-mand-Romanian disease, you know what started it.

"Before Toma Petre's relatives pulled his body from the grave, ripped out his heart, burned it to ashes, mixed it with water and drank it, he hadn't been in the news much."
This would be a great start to a book.

Darn you, punky brewster - I can't believe you posted almost the same thing at the same time!

KEY QUOTE:
"Its view, expressed by Constantin Ghindeano, the chief agent for the region, is that vampires aren't real and dead bodies in graves aren't to be dug out and killed again, even by relatives."
Even _relatives_!! That's good to know.

(Man, that was creepy)

I have several friends (and a wife) who are fans of vampire-related fiction and I'll be curious as to their take on this item. One or two would probably say that of course vampires are real!
Punky & Marty: you're both right, great opening.

BETTER QUOTE:
"That's the problem with vampires," said Doru Morinescu, a 30-year-old shepherd who, like many in the village, has a family connection to the current case. "They'd be all right if you could set them after your enemies. But they only kill loved ones. I can understand why... "
I really don't want to meet his relatives.

I´m studying here with a Romanian guy, reasonable man (never tried to steal a car, that is ;-)). He told me and an American friend pretty much the same story a week ago. Say what you want about this story...these guys REALLY believe that.
