BLOG MIGRATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Today is the Big Day: This blog will be migrating to another URL (pronounced "url"). A lot of thought, planning and effort have gone into this, so it will most likely be a total disaster. The whole Internet could implode. By nightfall the entire industrialized world will be communicating via smoke signals.
But if it actually goes as planned, there will be a link on this site directing you to the new site. It's going to be very elegant. We have employed some top website designers, who have produced some amazing work.

SOunds yummy, El, except for the turnover. Jackie likes cherry but I prefer apple or blueberry. Love cold fried chicken.
We also went to the library, where they finally had some books Jackie had on hold - Erica Spindler, Laurell Hamilton & Nora Roberts.
I also got the kind of book I always like to read when it's really really hot out - Whiteout, a thriller set in a snowbound Christmas landscape. It might not be great (I'll let you know if and when I read it) but the thought of it will cool you off.
Oh, it's by Ken Follett.

If You've Got a 'Brazilian,' You Can Lose the Pants Entirely
Manager: Jen*, what happened to dress code?
Jen: I just rolled my pants up. I was hot.
Manager: Did you shave your legs?
Jen: Yes.
Manager: Then it's okay.
Just in time for pantsless Friday.

I loves me some Rodney Crowell.
Oh yeah. Susan, did you play Tom today? Which?
I love "Downtown Train", but the Wench doesn't like it at all. It's funny how we were both Tom Waits fans from long before we knew each other, but we like different stuff by him.
My fav is "Clap Hands".

We missed the military parade on TV because we both slept late and because France is a few hours ahead of us. We saw bits and pieces of it on the news later. I didn't see Rita, though. I wondered if she was there or elsewhere in Paris.
Here we're getting ready for Giant Frog's nephew's arrival. We just reserved the boat rides to and from the islands and the hotel room on the big island for one night.
I'm off to see if there are any shops open so we can go buy some groceries. *poof*

There is a place in my commute where the same radio frequency (106.5) picks up two stations (one in Chatt.TN., dont know where the other is). Yesterday I got to hear Burning Down the House and Margaritaville simultaneously - what a combination.
Posted by: BigD@ | July 14, 2006 at 03:53 PM
Lab, of COURSE I played Tom. Downtown Train. Although I really like Old '55 too.
Don't like that one as much by the Eagles.

Five day forecast for Christchurch - the highs range between 45 and 52F. The lows aren't too awful - nothing freezing or less, so it's not so bad at the moment. MOTW, would you be interested in splitting the difference? That would give us both temps in the mid-to-high 70s.
Happy Birthday Rita!
Happy Bastille Day to France, all its outposts and Francophiles everywhere! (I'm not a F-phile, but I still think this photo looks amazing!)
Di.. just copy and paste everything everyone else has said, and pretend that I said it, too. They've been far more eloquent than I have, but I do know how death screws up families and brings out the best and worst in different relatives. Hopefully, as the grief eases, the memories you have of your GA will replace all of the pain of the moment.
Lab.. WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!! on the TW tickets. You realise that you can no longer say "Tom Waits NEVER tours!", because it's no longer true. Not that that would stop anyone.
AN! Good to see you! Come back!
This is the mental image I have of MOTW removing pants from Lab's lawn without stepping on the lawn itself.
I did get the "Short Circuit" reference! At least I'm not alone in my geekness! BTW - whatever happened to Fisher Stevens?
Posted by: Kafaleni | July 14, 2006 at 04:49 PM
Well Fishair The date itself has no particular meaning to me, but all the deposits that have been made kind of make it unchangeable. Although since it seems you will be back on the market soon I might have to reconsider things.

When I start makin' dinnah
I don't just make dinnah...
I be porkin'
That's what I be doin', huh
I be porkin'
I pork it to the east
And I pork it to the west
And I pork it with the woman that I love the best
I be porkin'
Let me ask you somethin'...
What time of the day do you like to make pork?
Have you ever ate pork just before breakfast?
Have you ever…….
ate pork while you watched the late, late show ?
Well, let me ask you this
Have you ever……….
ate pork on a couch ?
Well, now, let me ask you this
Have you ever…………..
ate pork on the back seat of a car ?!!?!
I remember one time I snuck some bacon out of my pocket in the back seat of a car
MMMHMMM
And the police came and shined his light on me, and I said:
'I'm porkin', that's what I'm doin', I be porkin''
I be PORkin'
I be PORKin' Ha! Ha!

As I raced through the living room this morning, I heard some lousy singing on TV. It was The Today Show in St. Louis (comes on before the real Today Show.) Live on the St. Louis Plaza today were a couple of guys butchering "All For You." Really bad job of it. I was in a hurry, turned it off and left for work.
I later found out it was Sister Hazel (two of them at least) who are performing in about an hour at Live on the Levee; a series of free concerts by the Arch.
Maybe the other three guys were sleeping in and they are the ones that "carry" those two.

I like The Eagles' "Old 55" too, Susan. Not saying as much, but it's still good.
Five day forecast for Christchurch - the highs range between 45 and 52F. The lows aren't too awful - nothing freezing or less, so it's not so bad at the moment. MOTW, would you be interested in splitting the difference? That would give us both temps in the mid-to-high 70s.
Let's see Kaf, 10 is 50, right? The way I remember it is 0 is 32 and each 10 degrees C is 18 F. Hence 10/50, 20/68, 30/84, 40/102. (Or 5/41, 15/59, 25/77, 35/93.)
Anyway, they keep pushing the forcast upwards as a heatwave is covering most of the U.S. It was 100 in Bismarck, North Dakota today!
Unfortunately for us, the two days we NEED to be in the city, Monday and Tuesday, are projected as the worst - 96 or so both days, with humidity making it feel like 100-110. Imagine sitting at the ballpark for 3 hours or more in that?
I don't even want to think about it.
Posted by: Jeff Meyerson | July 14, 2006 at 06:22 PM
So, Jeff, what you're saying then is that when we all meet in NYC on Monday, nobody will be wearing any pants, am I right?
Posted by: KDF | July 14, 2006 at 06:27 PM
Kaf, FIsher Stevens has kept acting, playing several semi-sleazy type roles including the sidekick in Early Edition, a series about a guy who gets the next day's newspaper delivered to him every day and has to figure out what needs fixing. Stevens was the friend always trying to get him to use the advance knowledge to cash in.
Posted by: Jeff Meyerson | July 14, 2006 at 06:29 PM
KDF: that is a given. Can't believe you are going to voluntarily subject yourself to it when you could cool off by (as Walter O'Reilly called it) the Cape of Cod.
Posted by: Jeff Meyerson | July 14, 2006 at 06:30 PM
Jeff, that presumes sense on my part. :)

You've got it, Jeff.. also the fire went out overnight and I can't get it to relight. Does anyone have some kerosene, meths, turpentine.. anything flamable? I want to marinate my firewood.
Posted by: Kafaleni | July 14, 2006 at 06:35 PM
I have managed to not turn the a/c in the house on yet. Because I'm cheap. It has been in the upper 80s to the lower 90s. The thermometer in the house hovers in the low 80s most of the day. But I seem to be acclimitizing to it. When I was home, the temps were higher (we hit 100 some days) but the humidity was so much lower that it felt good.
But Jeff, I'd be glad to brace the heat of the city in order to meet bloglits. *puts on sad, left-out face*

{{{{{Di}}}}} I'm way too late to say anything original, so I'll stick to a good old-fashioned hug. I agree with everything the other MOATies have said.
I remember "Early Edition". Kyle Chandler is cute.
Off to make dinner and possibly watch a movie...
Ooooh, that reminds me! Yesterday night we watched "12 Monkeys". I reeeeaaaally don't want to know what goes on inside Terry Gilliam's brain. That was scary. And sad.
I'll try to see if we can watch an upbeat movie tonight.

i loved 12 Monkeys (that is, the movie, i'm not making some sort of true confession here) and Terry Gilliam can be bleak (Brazil), but The Fisher King had kind of an upbeat ending... i guess what i liked most about 'monkeys' was its logical consistency, to date it's the only Brad Pitt movie ,i've paid money for!

A little something for fans of The Who.
It does remind me, however, of an old Quigman's cartoon - it mimicked a concert poster, with wrinkled semi-toothless men on it, and it said
"The Who returns again with the 2010 World Tour!"
"Talking 'Bout My Degeneration"
"Bingo Wizard"
"Old Age Wasteland"
and a few other 'songs'. This is kinda spookily close.
PS - I gave up on the fire and switched on the heater.
Posted by: Kafaleni | July 14, 2006 at 07:17 PM
Insomniac-i love 12 monkeys and Fisher King too. I never made it all the way through Brazil, but watched most of it thanks to Weasel. Of course the doomesday virus appealed to the evil scientist in me.

insom: I thought Brazil was overrated. We were in London one year and the weather was lousy so we said "what the heck" and saw 12 Monkeys. Surprisingly, Jackie liked it as much as I did. And she is a huge fan of Fisher King. Every time we go to Grand Central she talks about the waltz scene.
Leetie: spooky indeed! And too funny.

aaah.. so that's the official site. Was I looking at scalper tix? Although to get liquor, valet parking and waitress service, I might pay a little extra. Not $700 extra, but more power to someone who would.
Posted by: Kafaleni | July 14, 2006 at 08:51 PM
Yes, those are "broker" (i.e. scalper) sites. Of course, when they get stuck with the tickets they are over-hyping you can get a deal, as with the $156 tickets for Jimmy Buffett we got for $90 each.
OK, a relative deal.
I'm convinced someone (or several someones) at Ticketmaster is making a fortune kicking tickets to brokers. How else explain a concert at a 14,000 seat arena selling out in less than 10 minutes and the brokers ending up with piles of tickets.
Posted by: Jeff Meyerson | July 14, 2006 at 08:57 PM
nd if you check your scalper site, the "great reserved seats" are NOT great at all. First comes the Orchestra, then Stadium 1 - the odd numbered sections 1-15, then Stadium 2 - even #s 2-16, then the Mezzanine upstairs.
We usually try for Stadium 1.

Posted by: Jeff Meyerson | July 14, 2006 at 10:06 PM
I never saw "Fisher King," but I did see "Brazil" a few years back. I couldn't really follow it - I think I started watching it some time after it started - but I thought it was all right. Maybe I'd have liked it more if I had seen it from the beginning.
"12 Monkeys" was scary because the idea of 5 billion people dying isn't a nice one (especially to someone like me, who looks at explosions in violent movies and thinks of all the individual characters dying, even ones we never see, as in "Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow," etc), and sad because the whole story is a vicious circle with no hope of things changing for the better.
I mean, really... If this is what Terry Gilliam's dreams are like, I wouldn't want a peek at his nightmares.
I don't get the Brad Pitt hype, either, Kaf. I've never found him particularly attractive, and while he was OK in "Thelma and Louise" and a bit better in "12 Monkeys," I think it's gone pretty much downhill from there... The "Ocean" movies are fun mostly because of George Clooney.
Tonight's movie was "The X-Files." I cannot begin to describe what a rabid fan I was of the show. My favorite was always Scully. She could do no wrong.
After I moved to Argie, though, I couldn't watch it anymore - partly because I could only find it dubbed, and later because I had better things to do with my time. *sigh*
But the good part is that we have the first season on DVD! I may start watching it tomorrow, so I may not be around much. I'll be off ogling Scully's dissection skills.
/end long, pointless, rambling post
Posted by: Marie in Kourou | July 14, 2006 at 10:23 PM
Marie - aside from Brad, there was a LOT of eye candy in that movie - George, Don Cheadle, Andy Garcia, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon (hot by association, he doesn't usually do that much for me) and sooo many others. Yum!

Good morning, MOATies. Sadly, I did not wake up and find the heat wave to be a dream, but at least the weekend looks OK.
Note to those coming to NY for Dave on Monday: forecast is still in the 96 range.
Tonight's movie was "The X-F!les." I cannot begin to describe what a rabid fan I was of the show. My favorite was always Scully. She could do no wrong.
Marie, I always liked the humorous ones best.
Using the awesomeness of the Internet can I find the exact date?...Let's see... it was on 8/08/76!
Yeah, if you know where and how to look you can find anything on the internet. For years I talked about a memorable game my father took us to when we were kids, where the Yankees scored 9 runs in the first inning before any outs, and (as Col. Ruppert would have it) slowly pulled away.
Anyway, it was 4/24/1960 and they beat Baltimore, 15-9. But that score is deceptive because the Orioles hit TWO grand slams, in the 8th and 9th innings, to make it look respectable. We were long gone by then.

And that's what it is, a story about quickly stacking and unstacking 12 cups. Upstacking and downstacking, actually.

yes, hydrate. I ended up at the doctor's office this week because of dizzy spells and blood pressure problems; it turns out I am just dehydrated!

My doc once told me to drink water until your pee turns clear. That's when you know you are sufficiently hydrated.
OOOOHHHH! Clerks II is opening next weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, the Red Sox did get their butts kicked. *sigh*
*sniff* Yesterday, I officially turned down Letterman tickets for Monday, because the time conflicts with the reason I'll be in NYC -- to hang out with bloglits before going to see His Daveness! Don't know who the Letterman guests are that night, but it has occurred to me that Dave could be one of them. CNN is the only media appearance that's mentioned on the website, but I would think that he and Ridley will be grabbing all the appearances they can squeeze into their hours in NYC.
*loves Neo some water*

Here we drink water constantly. We have to, or we'd be dead before noon.
The Tour de France is going through the Ardèche now. It's one of the prettiest départements in France.
Bambi the entomologist. *snork*

KDF: now THAT's devotion! Actually, Dave is supposed to be CNN according to judi's list, not Letterman, but you never know.

I usually drank a glass an hour when I'm home. Clear all the way.

TMI, Jeff!
Color me cranky as the house did not cool off at all last night.

Okay, he has appeared on Letterman three times (twice on NBC, once on CBS,) and on one appearance he "proved that it is possible to set fire to a pair of men's underpants with a Barbie doll."
*snork*

*happy sigh* Yep, that's our Dave! I'd much rather see our Dave than Letterman. Of course, I love our Dave, so I'm prejudiced.

Mmmm...pork stuffed pork chops.
I have a memory of Rachel Ray doing them too...it was a low carb recipe, so the stuffing was sausage.
Today, high 95, heat index 104. Currently about 87. I'm getting ready to go out to the library and other places...get errands run, then spend the day doing laundry and other fun things so I'm free tomorrow.
Wheeeeeeeee!
Ooooh...need to get some Blenheims too.

the poor girl who lost her leg (to a Hummer accident!) is named Molly Bloom? Coincidence? Parents were English majors?
yes, i'll have to e-mail the date of the who concert in Miami to older sister so we can both feel old... it was at the Miami Orioles minor league park and of course it poured rain so after it stopped some of the more medicated fans started running the bases and doing belly-slides. The paper next day was all about the damage done to the field, though they didn't mention that the Who drew more than the Orioles ever did. There was some warmup band (which i'm not going to use the awesomeness of the internet to discover) but because of the rain delay and a 11 p.m. curfew for rock concerts they were cancelled..so we were all huddled up in the stands knowing someone was getting ready to play, when we heard the opening chords to 'Can't Explain' when there was a huge exodus onto the field... that was back when they were the loudest band in the world, it sounded like the music was inside my head!
Oh, and lasers. they had lasers.

Windows Media Player will not play it, sly.
Thanks, insom. Geezer bus leaving in 5 minutes.
But if we're talking "old" or "geezer" check this out: February 12, 1964, Carnegie Hall.
I was there with my friends Roy & Jan.

Carnegie Hall tickets.
I'm sure we had $3.00 balcony tickets for the 7:00 show. We were 15 at the time.
