NEWS FROM THE ART WORLD

Of course it's outside Britain's Tate Gallery.

Here's Guttman's website if you want to read the whole story.

MOTW: It was in New York. Taking the time to arrest someone for a misdemeanor offense means that it is a higher priority than all of the other work they have to do - which is an amazing huge amount. I'm sure it took some convincing on their part to get an officer to go with them once they showed up at the police station.

FYI: Ray Charles is not a blues singer.

FYI: *Everybody* likes "Georgia on my Mind". Saying you like that song is like saying you enjoy breathing.

*looks at Lab sideways*

But, I do like breathing.

*twirls a piece of hair while blowing a big bubble with her chewing gum*

I enjoy inhaling much more than exhaling.

I don't like Georgia on my mind.

ok I do, but I was trying ot pull a LabSpecimen.

Did I mention I saw Ray sing live in Atlanta on 4th of July! For Free! That was a great show!

I have to admit there were not sparks immediately with Weasel. I mean we were in Pirate costumes at a Sam's Club. But there were definite sparks on our first real date. and every day after.

/sugar overload

Ok, this is kind of on the subject, and yet, not really.

I just recently (as in within the past few weeks) experienced a little advertised, yet highly frustrating side effect of my G.B. surgery. For fear of grossing you all out, I'm not about to mention it here, but lets just say that every night after 9pm, for about an hour, I cant even stand to be near myself. Makes me all the more happy to inhale and exhale all the other hours of the day.

*notices blank stares and open mouths*

Ooh, was that TMI? Sorry.

*innocent look*

Oooh! Mad! Sorry! My post was more on the subject of inhaling and exhaling, certainly had nothing to do with sugar. Unless you count praying for something sweet smelling to cross your path.... Whoops. Nevermind.

Heh heh. Sorry.

*goes back to werk before she humiliates herself more*

It's okay, Mad. Everybody wants to be me.

D - thanks for sharing. We should have a contest some time.

I followed the link provided in the NYT's article; there's certainly more accurate information on the guy's page. I read all of it. What a world. *sigh*

OMGWTFBBQ!

So there I was about an hour ago, listening to Susan, reading the MB and dressed from the waist down (shorts, socks and shoes) with nighty still on and the phone rings -
CG: Hi, what are you doing?
ME: What's it to you? (always friendly!)
CG: Well, I'm in your hood and thought I'd stop by for coffee, if it's OK??
ME: (silent scream!! hyperventilating!!)
ME: Sure. I can throw on a t-shirt.

Find bra, find t-shirt, comb hair, not good, find Yankee baseball cap, deep breaths, run back and forth several times (just because), use remote to open garage door so he can come up the stairs, drop dirty silverware on floor, pick up and throw in sink, lock self in bathroom, hear him yell hi from kitchen, come out and calmly say
HI! Nice to see you!

CG: You look fine. (smooth)

And I didn't even take a xanax - yay me!
All's well that ends well. WHEW!

wolfie, that is a great video! The guy is really good. I liked the Travolta stuff the best, but it was all cool!

Yay! for El!

Notice that the writer of this article decided to write it from London.

Lab's article:

*yawn*

*grins* I really like CG, Eleanor. Even if he DID try to give you a heart attack today. (glad you handled it well)

As to the sparks thing, that's not what this was. A man just happened to walk past. It wasn't love at first sight or anything. It wasn't even lust; I know THAT feeling all too well! We didn't even make eye contact. It was just ZOT like lightning as as he walked by, and an intuitive feeling that this was very important. And I don't think I like being that affected by a total stranger for no discernable reason. I'm going to forget about it now.

Forget about what, neo??

*snork*

YAY! You guys are still here! YAY! I was afraid I scared you all away.

* pshshshsh * (air freshener)

Don't mind me - or DDi. Blog on ...

:'(
It wasn't me. Honest. My evil spirits only come out after the sun goes down.

That's what it was with this kid the first time. I saw him on campus, didn't make eye contact, didn't feel attracted to him or anything, just felt like he was a "kindred spirit" or something, or at least someone I should get to know. I'd never met him, didn't think I'd ever see him again, and just put it out of my mind. It wasn't until after I moved apartments and found out I'll be going to church and Monday activities with him for the next few months that I got all nervous about it and started thinking about it. And now I told you guys and it was totally distracting me last night. I didn't get ANY work done.

I'm still here, but that may only be a physical manifestation.

Congrats to (the absent) Coast Raven & Thumper, who both got posted today! Apparently today it's the Moatie Mens' turn.

I haven't tried buffalo or rabbit, but I love venison and duck. Marie, just using phonetics, are cailles quails? Because I haven't eaten quail either (please, no Quayle jokes..)

Regardless of where you get it.. if someone who is not a legitimate cellphone provider sells you a top of the line cellphone for $50, you KNOW that it's stolen, and you must be liable for your actions.

The Evolution of Dance was funneee! I've seen it somewhere before, but it's still funnneeeee!

Hey, how did we get from Jeff's Wham to Laynie's "thank you ma'am!" without the "Bam!"? (and not an Emerilesque "BAM", either!) - if I get the wham, I want the bam, too, tyvm!

Lab.. I like Ray Charles (who was not a blues singer!) and I like Georgia On My Mind.. I just don't like that it's the song that everyone seems to associate with him, and if you ring a radio station and ask them to play a little Ray for your aural gratification, they'll usually play Georgia On My Mind, when he has many many other songs from which they could have picked.

re Lab's article- it's a good thing my parents have earthquakes all the time then, their house being about a mile from the SAF

Once, for a few weeks, I had to square-dance during gym, but it wasn't fun because there was no show involved at the end of the course and not much enthusiasm from anyone involved.

In high school Jackie almost flunked gym one year as they were doing square dancing and she kept losing her partner during the "allemand right". She said it was because she's left handed and kept going the wrong way.

Sample lyrics: "Materialistic-kleptomaniac/please just give her her Sidekick back."

I loved the story, Marie, but can't believe that after all the publicity and trouble the stupid girl and her stupid mother didn't just give it back. They deserve what they got, in my opinion.

Wolfie, I've seen that before but it's always fun. He reminds me a little of Colin Mochrie, who I could see doing it too.

Kaf, I've had venison once (at the Haunch of Venison in Salisbury - where else? - but didn't care for it all that much. But that was 30 years ago and maybe I should try it again.

A lot of places around here serve buffalo burgers and some serve ostrich.

Kaf- agreed. Ray definitely has many excellent songs far and above Georgia on my mind. Although GOMM has historical signifacance and perhaps that is the reason for the overplay. That said I once found a very rare Ray cut on a jukebox in nowhere PA and when I put it on everyone in the bar was like wow great song who is that? Ray baby!

I like "Ruby" and "Crying Time" and "Let's Go Get Stoned" and so many others.

I have a CD called Rhythm & Soul (2 disk compilation) that has Ray singing "I Wish You Were Here Tonight" on it. I also have "Genius Loves Company" (a duets album he did the year before he died) and I love that, but a lot of it is him singing other people's music, not his own. (also.. to complete the category of my Ray songs, I have the Blues Brothers soundtrack with Ray", Jake & Elwood singing "Shake Your Tailfeather")

Technology zooooooooms ahead!

also - arsenide *snicker*

Overheard when some girl was walking past my window on her way to school (and submitted to Overheard@College):

Girl on cell: He thinks women are an endless roll of toilet paper created solely to wipe his butt... I know! What a useless piece of protein!

Oh my god, Sarah! That is definitely going to get posted.

I'm not entirely sure whether I have eaten quail (thanks for the translation, Kaf - wonder why I didn't think of it). I just have a vague memory of eating a really tiny roasted bird once, and it may or may not have been quail.

Jeff, the whole family's stubbornness floors me. Their threats of physical violence, too. They won't have a snowball's chance in hell with their lawsuit.

I'm sorry to say that I haven't heard much of Ray Charles's singing, apart from "Georgia On My Mind," which I seem to recall was the theme song for the Atlanta Olympics.

From the Department of I Don't Really Want To Know:

Doctor: Well, I can't guarantee that after the circumcision it will look exactly like what you described.

Sarah.. it probably will get posted.. but it has some big competition..

Sorority girl: Oh my god! Wouldn’t it be, like, so amazing if, instead of producing milk, our mammary glands produced beer?

And here's a definite head banger:

Coworker #1: Hey, can you cover my shift next week?
Coworker #2: Why? Where are you going?
Coworker #1: My friend's boyfriend is graduating from pharmacology school.
Coworker #2: Ew. Who would want to be a farmer?

Doh!

Jeff.. they still can't beat the chick that went shopping for icet rays.

Meanwhile, in college, still..

Prof: Can you think of who would fall into the category of having little education and prestige but a lot of money?
Guy: Um…rappers?

The O@C guy was complaining about there being too many submissions the other day:
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 I Was Afraid of This

The ratio of contributors to readers is much, much higher for College than it was for NY. Meaning come September when school is back in session I'ma have a bit of a problem.

Yeah, I know. Boo hoo, too many people want to help you with your site. Wah wah wah.
posted by Michael Malice @ 3:33 PM

Also, I like that the headline for his site is michaelmalice.com- Bring it Biotechs!

is O@C affiliated with OINY or OITO? because there's no link at either of the other sites. I'm guessing that Michael created an indepent site with a similar name to capitalise on the other sites' popularity. He needs to advertise.. or encourage a little word of mouth.

BTW, my philosophy is that it doesn't matter if 10 people or 1000 people are reading.. you have to do the best you can and put out the best quality material. Good luck to him!

He's actually a founding editor of Overheard in New York and Overheard in the Office and just signed an OitO book deal. I don't know why he doesn't have links to the College one on the other sites.

Speaking of diffent foods, here is my contribution:

My ex used to have friends who once a year had a game night. No, we didn't go and play games; everybody invited to the party (besides us) hunted. So it was like a potluck; everybody brought some kind of game to eat. Deer, quail, pheasant, rabbit, duck, goose, several kinds of fish. Supposedly somebody brought possum one year, though they may have told me that just to see how I'd react.

Venison is a very lean meat, so they wrapped venison steaks in bacon.... MMMMMMMMMMM. Best meat I ever ate. I tried to fix it myself another time, but of course it was inedible.

Dave just posted that video I linked to last night (credit to GW, I didn't send it in, curses!) but someone posted that it sounded like the women weren't "robbed" by two men

I just saw that, Sarah! Then again, it just goes to prove that you're as funny as GW, so that's not a bad thing.

Just a note for anyone who might be interested. Jackie "joined" that PaperBackSwap.com site that Sandy passed on to some of us last week - actually, I do ALL the work but in her name. So far I've sent out about 8 books and she has a bunch of stuff coming in, so it's working out well and it's a lot of fun.

If you have a lot of books sitting around the house that you'd like to get rid of &/or exchange for others, check it out.

Sarah & Kaf: also, they have Overheard at the Beach coming soon. They are soliciting entries.

Girl on cell: I don't want to talk about your eating disorder every fucking time we talk!

Hey, who can blame her?

Jeff got posted! It really is a day for the Moat Men!

*zips in*

Yay Jeff!

*zips out to czech MB*

Finally!

YAY! for the male MOATies!!

*skips out chanting "Take anything you want"*

*dodges sock o'nickels*

On the paperback site: there is a "wish list" area. I found 10 or so books I had that people have listed as wanting, posted them, and already got 5 responses! That's five more books for us (well, Jackie) once they arrive.

wOOt! Jeff (on the books, that is!) Get a couple for yourself if you find stuff that you want!

Jeff- This paperback exchange thing won't get rid of the overall number of books I own. That is the main problem. I have books on two coasts!!! I know my dad is going to make me collect the ones in Virginia soon. There are certainly some I won't mind getting rid of, but I don't want any new ones in return. Is that an option on the site?

what happened to my post?

Take two. I just got a phone call. Not unusual, you say. Ok, but it was a recording who phoned me! Ok, still not unusual.

The message says, "It is important that you call Ken Hughes at (888) xxx - xxxx. This is not a solicitation call." I can't remember the number, and oddly, my caller ID always erases this number after just a few moments!

I've received this call likely a dozen times in the past several months. At first I ignored it, but then I got ticked off. Who leaves a message like that?

So now whenever they call, I phone back. The first time, I got the phone company's standard "We're sorry; the number you have dialed is no longer in service..." spiel. I get that about half the time.

The other times, when I get through, I reach a telemarketing service, as I expected. However... I have spoken to three different phone salesmen there, and none of them have ever heard of Ken Hughes and have no idea why he is giving out this phone number. If he's trying to sell something, he's doing a crappy job.

there is a bachelor party going in the house across the street. what do you suppose the odds are i won't wander over at some point?
yeah. i think so too.
i have not yet seen a stripper arrive. but i have seen a guitar, a banjo, a mandolin, and a violin being brought in. musical bunch. celtic type so far.
im going out to enjoy the music and see if i can mooch a beer.

neo, sometimes collection agencies do that kind of thing. Could your ex have let something go?

*completely freaks out*

COLLECTION AGENCIES???

*faints*

Yikes, Neo... It doesn't sound too good.

Whoooohooooo Wolfie! Take pictures of any men in kilts you may encounter.

*recovers from faint*

Funny how certain words strike fear into the heart. I pay my bills in full, every month. I have no outstanding bills. It is against the ex's religion to carry debt, so I doubt very strongly there is anything he did that is coming home to roost. So there would be no possible reason that I should fear a collection agency. Unless of course, there is a mix-up due to my name change... *trembles a little*

. There are certainly some I won't mind getting rid of, but I don't want any new ones in return. Is that an option on the site?

Well, I suppose you could just not choose any books in return. One woman we got a book from said she was having a 2-for-1 sale so we should pick a second book. That's another option.

El, why are you trying to do that? Stop scaring neo!

Anyway, I've gotten a few calls like that. Just ignore them. I also hang up on Ed Koch ("Hi, I'm former Mayor Ed Koch, and I'd like you to vote for..." "F@CK YOU, ED!") and any other pre-recorded calls.

Beleive it or not, Jackie is watching that stupid "talent" show with Regis on NBC. Most of the talent (including "judge" David Hasselhoff) is awful, but they seem to be letting most of them go on anyway.

However, there was a little 8 year old girl doing standup who was worth the rest of the show put together. ("What's with all these fat black people?" She was black, needless to say.)

It's almost worth watching it for her - at least, turn it on at 9:20 to see her.

I just watched the new Pink Panther movie and I have to say I really liked it. I especially liked the part with (uncredited) Clive Owen and the camouflage scene. Why weren't Clive Owen and Jason Statham credited? I didn't like the opening sequence as well as some of the old ones (I really liked the one for "The Trail of the Pink Panther") but I'm planning on watching it with my brother tonight or tomorrow.

*giggles remembering the camo scene*

Jackie just called me in to see Bernie, "the World's Oldest (at 65) Male Stripper", an act I'm sure Wolfie would appreciate if she wasn't hitting on the guys at the bachelor party.

Granted, he had a terrible combover and granted, he had the world's worst overdone tan, but for 65 he had a damn good body, and isn't that what you want in a stripper? Two of the judges tried to buzz him off but Hasselhoff was cheering him on and said (quote) "I wanted to see how far he would go."

He was pulling off his pants (appeared to have a thong underneath) when they stopped him.

The show is a train wreck.

The thing that's really stupid (well, the whole thing is stupid obviously, let's say "extra stupid") is that no matter how bad an act is - as in the juggler who kept dropping things - NO ONE gets rejected!

I'm sorry neo.:( The minute after I pushed post I wished I hadn't sent it. But I keep getting calls like that and mail from an "" agency to a Laura Silvers at my addy. And I freaked out, but CG told me that they just find people with similiar names and send to all addys (or phone) and hope they'll get lucky!

And I pay all my bills in full every month too, so, nothing to worry about.

*smooch for neo*

No worries, Eleanor. In case it is a collection agency, now I've done myfreaking out ahead of time. And reason has had time to set in.

I've googled Ken Hughes, and come up with a certified accountant/ consultant, film writer/ director (he directed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,) a first grade teacher in Elyria, Ohio, an associate professor of engineering at UOP, someone who wrote some political papers, an external consultant for AC Nielsen, etc.

Ok... I left the caller ID alone for long enough and the number reappered. I called it. It is indeed a collection agency. They are looking for a friend of my ex's; this guy left the country over a year ago. I offered to give them my ex's number.

True, El. What's weird is we used to get a lot of calls for "Jay Meyerson" - partly because we just have the first initial listed in the phone book.

But it turned out that "Jay Meyerson" - though not a relative - is an accountant at the place where we have our taxes done!

Small world.

But we also get calls looking for other Meyersons, ones we've never heard of.

OMGWTFBBQ

I googled firther. Shouldn't have called them!!

CRAP

Uhoh, neo.

So, he'll bother you ex for a while.

Uh oh, neo, that's not good

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

My feet feel good.

For a couple of weeks now, my feet --- and then my back -- have hurt.

When I was growing up, my mom had foot problems and for quite some time, "orthotics" was the word of the day. I got *so* tired of hearing "orthotics". "Where are my orthotics? Wait, I can't leave yet, I have to put in my orthotics. I can't wear those heals, they won't work with these orthotics."

Then there were the goshawful ugly shoes she wore because those were the only ones that would work with the orthotics.

I swore then that I would NEVER wear orthotics. Or ugly shoes.

OK, she was a kindergarten teacher and on her feet all day, so I can definitely see that would be a huge thing for her. I don't have those issues; but I do now have very sore feet.

My feet, especially my right heel, have been really bothering me and I had conceded enough to not wear my cutesey strappy sandals every day. And I wear tennies to and from work; but change at work. And some days, I wear a comfortable pair of loafers.

But still --- OWWW.

Tonight, I bought..um... some *inserts* for my shoes that are WONDERFULLLL!!!!!!

I'm so loving this. And after wearing these all evening, I can't wait to wearing my cutesy strappy sandals again tomorrow.

And this is all I will say about my *inserts*.

Neo, sounds like since you gave him a phone number -- your ex's -- he'll stop calling.

Jenni is s tarting the "priceline" search. She admitted $50.00 wouldn't work for NYC.

We leave a week from today. YAY!

lol.. I had a look at Priceline, Sly. I thought it might be a bit of a rude shock for Jenni!

Neo - Quick! Put these on if anyone knocks at your door from Ken Hughes agency, tell em you've never heard of Neo Phyte.

no, oddly, they didn't WANT his phone number. I am trying to figure out what exactly they are doing to warrant them being called Rip off artists, but the site is too busy, due to a recent media release about this guy. What the heck is going on, and what the heck have I done by phoning them back?

well, it's a bit late to check with your local business bureau over the phone.. so I wouldn't panic until you ring them. Then you can panic, if it's worth panicking over.

YAY! for being independent, smart, and literate!! Hooray for Colin Firth!!

According to Pajiba:
In many relationships, the figurative “third date” is where each partner presents his or her defining movie, the one film that epitomizes your personality — the piece of pop culture you put out there to reveal your essence... Bruckheimer can ruin a relationship or Alexander Payne can make it...
If, on a third date, your girlfriend pulls out anything from Merchant Ivory Productions (Howard’s End, The Remains of the Day), anything adapted from a Jane Austen novel, or almost any movie starring Colin Firth, there is probably nothing wrong with her. She’s smart, independent, and literate.

What if she pulls out Lethal Weapons 1 through 4, followed by Casablanca?

oh.. and Remains of the Day was one of the very few times that I've liked the movie better than the book. The book took FOREVER to read.. it took Hopkins' character three days just to sneeze!

ooops.. pages, not days. It just felt like days

I don't know. You'd have to read the article.

Laura Silvers is an atty in N.Y.?? eeekkk!

neo, not to worry. There's nothing they can do to you, nothing. Just don't talk to them again, and don't admit anything to your ex.
/end FCDA advice

Over and out!

MiK- I was going to mention earlier that caille is indeed quail (the state bird of CA, which is the reason I know this) Itty bitty roasted birds. Quail doesn't taste much different than other poultry, it's just harder to eat. Quail eggs don't taste much different than other eggs either, just smaller.

i've had ostrich burger... and venison

had to watch the talent show thingy... i felt sorry for the singer who was voted on who said backstage,"I've always known I had talent , and now it's been confirmed." (by Hasselhoff, Brandi with an "i", and Simon Cowell Lite)

and speaking of talentless hacks... here is my latest entry for the Bulwer-Lytton bad writing contest...

As Stephen gazed upon the prostrate prostitute and thought about the many times he had chickened out before, to the everlasting derision of his friends, he was still wondering, would this be the night he would finally earn the bed rash of courage?

insom-wtd? Where did you find that?

*runs in, totally unheinzed*

I hope all is well with me MOATies, I promise to ketchup soon!

The new job is going well so far, except for the fact that I'm training with one of their senior techs in Hialeah, which is quite a long commute in South Florida. It's only 32 miles, but it takes 45 minutes in the AM because I travel between 6:30 and 7:30, and it's an hour and a half commute back home.

I am learning that servicing these ATMs is a pretty easy, straightforward job... the machines pretty much tell you what is wrong -- paper jam in deposit slip printer, bill reader jammed, card reader malfunction etc... It's really not much harder than clearing a photocopier or printer jam, except you need a lot of security codes and whatnot if you have to open the whoozymawhatchitz that has all the cash in it. Also, in some of the more questionable neighborhoods, you have to take an armed security guard with you (After 8 pm this is mandatory no matter where you are).

I still have a huge amount of online courses to take, and I have to ride shotgun with another tech and train so communication will be spotty for the next week/week and a half, but rest assured I miss youse guys and will be able to chatter soon, because on slow days I can just find a Wifi hotspot and play on my laptop between service calls! WooHoo!

</quickie update>

Today is the anniversary of the last thread; it has been active for two years solid now. Not a bad record, for one thread. And Dave D is still trying to be last. *smiles fondly*

sarah j.- the Bulwer-Lytton contest is for the worst opening sentence of a (non-existent) novel,so i wrote it...

more details (as well as plenty of examples) here

morning! evening! I'm babysitting again, and my sis and b-i-l don't clear their cache, because all my details are still "remembered" in here. eek

Not that I mind.. it makes my life easier!

Good early morning, MOATies (except Kaffy, for whom good late night) and Happy Chocolate Eclair Day.

Jackie has to go into work early today as her friend Lola's mother is in the ICU and today is her school's graduation with the Deputy Chancellor coming. They don't trust anyone but Jackie to substitute!

bed rash of courage

*sound of very loud snorkage from somewhere in the Amazon*

Servicing the ATM... AGNFA Kinky RB?

But seriously, yayyyyy for Tony being able to blog regularly soon! We miss you!

...or almost any movie starring Colin Firth, there is probably nothing wrong with her. She’s smart, independent, and literate.

*high-fives Sarah J*

About "The Remains of the Day"... I liked the book very much, but can't compare it to the film because I haven't seen it yet. I want to, though.

I'll be off to the post office when the rain eases up a bit to mail my passport soon. *shudder* Scaryness.

I *heart* musical people.

Jeff? 60 yr old stripper? Eeeekkk!

There is barstool racing down at the lake today and bossman won't lemme go. *pouts*

*blurks*

Kaf, with Priceline, you can either take the prices they suggest, or suggest your own and see what happens. I know a lot of people who book hotels at prices lower than are suggested.

We'll see what happens.

*sings*

M-y-y-y-y-y kind of town, Chicago is --- NOT

5 - 13!!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The above was a baseball rant/whine, btw .

Servicing the ATM

At the risk of wayyyy TMI, this made me snork for a very bad reason.

ATM is an up and coming genre of pr0n that stands for @n@l-to-mouth.

I think that's pretty self-explanatory and will go no further.

In other news, Go U.S. and Go Azzuri!

*gives BrianB a look*

Thanks. Now I'll have THAT in my brain every time I go to the Atomatic Teller Machine. {shudder}

Accorading to Meghan, A-T-M spells "Mom".

*passes BrianB her perving crown*
I have learned my something new today. And learned I've been slacking on my pervie duties.

*plans fieldtrip to the toy store*
for study reasons of course.
