Raul Castro is the leader of Cuba. Fidel has ceded power, at least temporarily. It was just announced on Cuban state television tonight.

My friends, we've been saying this for months....this guy is about to shuffle off the mortal coil and they are trying to figure out how to smooth out the transition. If anything is to happen for Cuba, the time is now! Raul does not have what it takes to lead the island the way his brother did and hopefully the dissidents on the island can start something.

Could this really be the beginning of the end?
Miami will be one crazy city and I hope that if it is the end of Fidel, this city will remain as calm as is hoped.

A.T. You're probably right. Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that we saw the great propaganda job the Cuban press did on Raul? Seems a little too coordinated.

The next 24 hours will be full of specualtion.
Known to many, Fidel Castro isn't well liked. Will there be any atttempts to disrupt his rest while hospitalized.
I mean, attempts to pull his plug.

Just to clarify: Castro stated that this transfer of power is temporary... until his surgery for his bleeding intestines heal. Assuming he survives of course.
Posted by: Ian | July 31, 2006 at 11:30 PM
And yes, there may be more to this than the press knows... Raul has become more public lately. Perhaps at the request of Fidel.
Posted by: Ian | July 31, 2006 at 11:31 PM
I hope he gets well soon!

FIDEL CASTRO IS DEAD.
For 47 years he has done nothing but lie to the Cuban people. It is therefore fitting that he should die as he has lived, lying to the end.
There has been no intestinal operation and no formal transfer of power; nor, naturally, will there be a two-month convalescense. Castro is either on life support, with no possibility of recovery, or else he has been mummufied like Lenin and only awaits the moment that Raul Castro has solidified his power to be formally declared dead and put on display for public adulation.
In any case, he has ceased to be the focus of power in Cuba. From now on, when men are murdered, imprisoned tortured or exiled in Cuba, it shall no longer be by his order but will still be in his name.
The death of Fidel Castro does not mean the liberation of the Cuban people. This can only happen when the Cubans shake off both the physical and psychological shackles which he has imposed on them. Today, at least, the psychological shackles have been broken.
And what would Fidel's hell be like?
To languish in a Cuba of his own making, except not as the lord of the manor, but as a miserable serf, enduring on his own flesh everything that he has made his people suffer over the last 47 years.

I'm not even Cuban and I am glad as hell that this bum is dying painfully and slowly if not dead already. I have been playing Maricaibo Oriental from the late and great Beny More all day and have it on full blast.

I heard a rumor that Fidel is dead and Raul doesn't want to run the country. He is busy making arrangements to spend the rest of his life in exile somewhere off the island, probably with the millions he has stolen throughout the years. Could this be true?

It's good to know that the U.S. government has not abandoned its efforts to liberate Cuba of that anachronistic dictator Fidel Castro. In fact, the U.S. government has probably succeeded in a slow-motion, high-tech assassination. It's good that their doctors aren't smart enough to figure out what happened to Mr. Castro. All the evidence points to a kind of reverse-radiotherapy, applying a principle well-known to radiotherapists. When he was on his adventures in Argentina recently, he was cross-fired with powerful X-ray lasers from different angles. Hidden in TV cameras, the X-ray laser beams would converge in Mr. Dictator's fat abdomen. Each beam would not leave enough collateral damage to produce a distinct track. But several beams could be made to converge at a common region, such as the dictator's intestines, and at that location enough irradiation would be received to permanently destroy intestinal tissues. In fact, the progress of his "disease" suggests the typical time delay in symptoms due to radiation damage. His stupid doctors will have to constantly anastomose pieces of intestines that are still damaged but not dead yet until they run out of half-healthy tissue. Then he will either die or have to go on IV feeding for the remainder of his putrid life. Good job!!
