Beyond the 4th and 5th Ammendment problems (seized without warrant, not given Miranda rights, etc.), it seems clear any statements were obtained based on a most egregious lie. Now I know law enforcement routinely lies about the evidence they have or don't have, but I don't think you can lie saying "we don't want anything with you" then throw the book at someone - after they cooperated to a T.
And again, the governement has conceded that NO official government or military secretes were exposed by Alvarez at any time. He was basically a political analyst.

I don't think he needed to be "mirandized", he was never under arrest. If he voluntarily went to the hotel room, he not need be advised of his rights until he is held against his will.
These folks are naturalized US Citizens. The constitution prescribes a punishment for treason. Lucky for them that the US Atty did not charge them with that.

First, it is interesting how you did not address your false labeling of the Mariel boatlift Cubans as mostly criminals. Rather you only pointed to a misspelling.

Sir of the 125k people that arrived in the mariel boatlif ( you learned how to spell Mariel) good for you johnny boy. most of us cubans did stay in miami to live. as far as I remember i only lasted 5 days there and them moved elsewhere to live because miami was never our final destination. like many thousands did. I never said That I have never been to miami.Do you need glasses? sir I go there for vacation only. by the way it is a fun place to be in south beach, the cuban cuisine, wonderful sir. In relation to the movie Scarface sir it is just that a movie. None of that you see really happened the way it was portrayed. The only real footage in the movie is at the beginning fidel castro speaking and a couple of boats arriving ( in black and white). eveything else sir, just a holywood movie. Yes they can do it, and routinely do. That's why your not suppose to say anything until you have a lawyer. If you find yourself caught in a situation like this simply respond with: "Sir am I under arrest?". If they say no then walk off and get a lawyer. If they say yes and put you in cuffs tell them: ‘I don't have anything to say until I talk to my lawyer.’
Don't be stupid and incriminate yourself. Law enforcement's job is to wrack up as many convictions as possible not to play nice guy and let law breakers go. I downloaded a video from the ACLU on how to deal with things like this. I’ll post it somewhere if one of you guys wants to see it and gives me a place to upload it.

It was my understanding that treason was a crime against the government not individual citizens. For example: selling crypto to the Chinese or helping to assassinate the president would fall under treason. Spying on private groups at the request of a foreign government would not.
If this couple were spies then they were pretty crappy ones. Spies are suppose to be mentally and physically tough and not crack under pressure. As well as being trained on how to deal with interrogations. This guy cracked immediately when they leaned on him just a little, then he started sobbing like a baby when they mentioned jail time.
